Description
Device and method for purifying waste water.
The invention relates to a device and method for purifying waste water, more in particular to such a device and method, which also makes nitrogen removal (denitrification) possible.
In biological denitrification, heterotrophic bacteria convert nitrate into molecular nitrogen (N2). These bacteria need an electron donor.
jj
Some denitrifying bacteria are lithotrophic and use hydrogen or sulfur compounds as an electron donor.
The present invention has for its object to provide a compact device and method for purifying waste water, with which also nitrogen 1 can be removed from the waste water, which device and method are feasible and economically feasible.
The present invention is based on WO 98/19971. This publication discloses the preamble of device claim 1 as well as the preamble of process claim 10. WO 98/19971 discloses an anaerobic reactor, in the form of a UASB reactor, on which an aerobic reactor is placed. At the bottom of the anaerobic reactor the supply of influent and waste water to be cleaned takes place. Above that is the so-called fermentation chamber, where contaminants are converted into biogas, in particular methane, with the help of anaerobic biomass. Gas collection caps are provided in the upper part of the anaerobic reactor for collecting the biogas. In WO 98/19971 the anaerobic UASB reactor is separated from the aerobic reactor by a partition wall with openings, such that a buffer chamber forms between the gas hoods and the partition wall in which anaerobic biomass, which has passed the gas hoods, can collect and form up to can come to settle, while the openings in the partition allow transport of anaerobic effluent from the anaerobic reactor upwards to the aerobic reactor.
At the bottom of the aerobic reactor, air, at least an oxygen-containing gas, is supplied. In the aerobic reactor, organic impurities are converted into essentially carbonic acid and aerobic biomass.
The aforementioned object is achieved according to the invention by providing a device for purifying waste water comprising: 1029302 2 an anaerobic reactor for anaerobically treating the waste water with an anaerobic biomass; • an aerobic reactor for aerobically treating waste water; and an intermediate compartment located between the anaerobic reactor and the aerobic reactor; 5 wherein the anaerobic reactor comprises a fermentation chamber; wherein the aerobic reactor comprises aeration means for supplying oxygen-containing gas on the underside; wherein the anaerobic reactor, the intermediate compartment and the aerobic reactor are provided in a column above one another with the intermediate compartment between the anaerobic reactor and the aerobic reactor in, on the one hand, anaerobic effluent from the anaerobic reactor - originating from the part of the gas collecting means located above the gas collection means anaerobic reactor - to receive and on the other hand to deliver intermediate effluent from the intermediate compartment as an aerobic influent for the aerobic reactor characterized.
That a return system is provided between the aerobic reactor and the intermediate compartment for returning part of the aerobic effluent and the aerobic biomass from the aerobic reactor to the intermediate compartment.
By providing an anoxic intermediate compartment between the anaerobic reactor and the subsequently connected aerobic reactor, through which the anaerobic effluent is passed before entering the aerobic reactor as an aerobic influent, and through a part of the aerobic effluent and the aerobic in this anoxic intermediate compartment recycle biomass (instead of returning aerobic effluent to the anaerobic reactor as WO 98/19971 mentions) the invention makes it possible to denitrify the nitrate present in the aerobic effluent in the anoxic intermediate compartment with the aid of also from the aerobic reactor recycled aerobic biomass. The nitrate is converted into N2, among other things. This is often done according to the comparison: 4 NO3 + 4H * + 5 [c] - 5 CO2 + 2N2 + 2H2O, where [c] stands for carbon from COD, for example. If a carbonless COD is used, the formula will look different. The removal of the N 2 gas can take place after the anoxic intermediate compartment 30 in the aerobic reactor together with venting the aerobic reactor, but could also take place in the anoxic intermediate compartment itself. The vertical arrangement in a column limits the required floor space to a minimum and minimizes the number of parts required, such as pipes.

If a relatively large amount of biogas is developed in the fermentation chamber, it is advantageous according to the invention if gas collection means are provided on the top of anaerobic reactor for collecting biogas. However, anaerobic reactors / processes are also known in which relatively little biogas is produced, even in which hardly or no biogas bubbles are observed. The biogas can be completely, at least almost entirely, in solution.
In case the aerobic effluent should contain insufficient COD for the amount of nitrate to be denitrified, it is advantageous according to the invention if feed means are provided which are connected on the one hand to a COD source and on the other hand to the intermediate compartment for adding 'COD substance' to it. feed. The COD source can be an external COD source, such as a storage tank with COD, such as methane gas or sugar-containing liquid, or one from another process! originating supply line. However, the COD source can also be an internal COD source. Thus, according to the invention, it is of particular advantage if the COD substance originates from the anaerobic process. The gas collection means can be used for this purpose, in which case the COD source will comprise the gas collection means. However, COD substance also present in the anaerobic effluent can be used. This can be dissolved COD substance or bell-shaped / gaseous COD substance.
Where COD source is discussed here, a physical part of the installation is meant. Where "COD substance" is referred to here, a composition required for the chemical, in particular biological, cleaning process, in particular denitrification, is meant.
For practical reasons, according to the invention, if the COD substance is gaseous, it is advantageous if the supply means are connected to the return system to supply carbon to the intermediate compartment via the return system. It is thus possible to add "COD substance" to the return system and to recycle it simultaneously with the effluent and aerobic biomass returned from the aerobic reactor into the anoxic compartment via the same supply means.
Het is volgens de uitvinding verder van voordeel wanneer de anaërobe reactor 30 qua opbouw een Upflow Sludge Blanket (USB) reactor is.It is furthermore advantageous according to the invention if the anaerobic reactor 30 is an Upflow Sludge Blanket (USB) reactor in terms of structure.
In order to prevent exchange between the media present in the aerobic reactor and the intermediate compartment, in particular of oxygen from the aerobic reactor to the intermediate compartment, the intermediate compartment and the aerobic reactor are through a partition, which comprises one or more passages , separated. This separation can be a membrane, such as a perforated plate, with sufficient resistance (over the perforations) to prevent backflow of gas bubbles or oxygen-rich water through the membrane / perforations.
According to a further aspect, the object of the invention is achieved by providing a method for purifying waste water, wherein the waste water is subjected in a vertical arrangement to, successively and from bottom to top, an anaerobic treatment and an aerobic treatment, with the feature that nitrate is removed by: partially supplying aerobic effluent and aerobic biomass from the aerobic treatment, such as aerobic effluent comprising aerobic biomass, to the anaerobic effluent of the anaerobic treatment, • that aerobic effluent, that aerobic biomass and subjecting anaerobic effluent to an anoxic treatment, and supplying the anoxic effluent of the anoxic treatment to the aerobic treatment.
Regarding the advantages and effects achieved with the method according to the invention, reference can be made to the foregoing description with regard to the device according to the invention. This also applies to the dependent method claims, which for that reason will not be discussed separately here.
According to yet a further aspect, the invention relates to the use of a device according to one of claims 1-7 for carrying out the method according to one of claims 9-14.
The desired ratio of the aerobic recirculation stream to the anoxic intermediate compartment and the influent stream to the anaerobic reactor is approximately 4 to 5 for sewage waste water, ie 4 to 5 parts of recirculation stream to 1 part of influent stream. A different ratio can be calculated for other waste water flows depending on the amount of nitrogen to be removed! The present invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to an exemplary embodiment schematically shown in the drawing.
The only figure shows a device 1 for purifying waste water. This device comprises an anaerobic reactor 2, an aerobic reactor 3 and an anoxic intermediate compartment 4. The anaerobic reactor 2, aerobic reactor 3 and the anoxic intermediate compartment 4 are shown very schematically in this example as housed in a vertical arrangement in which they are mounted above superimposed into a columnar structure. The realization may involve a single column unit in which the anaerobic reactor, the aerobic reactor and the anoxic intermediate compartment are accommodated. However, it is also conceivable that the anaerobic reactor, the intermediate compartment and the aerobic reactor are designed in 2.3 or more units that are stacked into a column.
The anaerobic reactor in this example is a so-called UASB reactor. In this reactor, contaminants are converted into methane. Gas collection means 5, such as so-called gas collection caps, are arranged at the top of the anaerobic reactor 2. In the case of a UASB reactor, a 3-phase separation system can be used for the gas hoods as described in EP-1,291,326. As indicated by the arrow to the right (from the right-hand side), collected biogas can be removed elsewhere.
As further described below, it can also be wholly or partly recycled via line 9a or otherwise into the device according to the invention.
The UASB reactor 2 is provided with a supply line 11 for supplying influent, waste water to be cleaned. This waste water to be cleaned is distributed over the UASB reactor via a schematically shown distribution device 15. This distribution device 20 for distributing the influent of the anaerobic reactor can, in particular in the case of an anaerobic reactor with gas lift, be a perforated plate, as described in WO-98/19971. However, the distribution device can also be designed differently, for example as a pipe system. The waste water goes up through a bed 14 of anaerobic biomass. Hereby gas is formed, in particular methane, which rises as gas bubbles 13 and thereby also takes up anaerobic biomass. At the top of the UASB reactor, the gas, also referred to as biogas, is collected by the gas collection means. The gas collection means 5 herein form part of a so-called three-phase separator, so that also the rising biomass is captured. What then remains is the biogas and biomass-free effluent from the anaerobic reactor, also referred to here as the anaerobic effluent. This anaerobic effluent, schematically indicated by arrows 16, then enters the intermediate compartment 4. From the intermediate compartment 4, this anaerobic effluent then rises further to form the influent of the higher-lying aerobic reactor 3. It is also possible that the gas collection means are omitted or used in part to capture biogas. In those cases, the anaerobic effluent (16) contains biogas bubbles that are introduced into the anoxic space together with that anaerobic effluent.
Between the intermediate compartment 4 and the aerobic reactor 3 is provided a partition wall 10 provided with one or more passages 5, which partition wall can take the form of a perforated plate through which liquids and gas bubbles can pass upwards, but not downwards. The perforated plate can for instance be made of metal or plastic.
In the aerobic reactor 3, oxygen, at least 10 oxygen-containing gas such as air, is supplied via a supply system 7. In this aerobic reactor, contaminants are converted primarily into carbon dioxide, water and biomass through aerobic bacteria. The bubbles from air, air from which oxygen has been absorbed and to which carbonic acid and nitrogen have been added, are depicted by means of bubbles 12. The aerobic biomass is represented by flakes 17. At the top of the aerobic reactor 3 a plate separator 19 is provided in which the aerobic biomass 17 opportunity it is offered to settle and then sink back into the actual reactor chamber 21 of the aerobic reactor 3. From the separator 19 the end effluent, which has been removed from biomass and gases, is then discharged via a line 18 for direct discharge or possibly further processing . The aerobic reactor 3 is furthermore, in this example, provided with a discharge line 20 for collected gases. However, the anaerobic reactor 3 can also be completely or partially open from above. It will be clear to those skilled in the art that for the separation of aerobic sludge, a different system can also be chosen, such as for example a flotation unit.
The device as described so far with reference to the figure does not essentially differ from the device described in WO 98/19971. For examples of further details, reference may then also be made to WO 98/19971. For examples of the gas collection means, reference may be made to the 3-phase separator as described in EP 1,291,326.
According to the invention, a return line 8 is now provided. Optionally, a pump 23 is included in the return line. This return line 8 discharges from the aerobic reactor 3 a portion of the effluent 22 from the reactor chamber 21 of the aerobic reactor 3. In this example, this effluent comprises both liquid that can be further cleaned because it contains nitrates and aerobic biomass 17. Via 1029302 7 return line 8, this aerobic biomass comprising effluent is returned to the anoxic compartment 4. In the anoxic compartment 4, the aerobic biomass, which includes COD, converts the nitrates into nitrogen gas, among other things. This nitrogen gas is passed through the membrane to the aerobic reactor to be discharged there together with the bubbles of exhaust air 12.
If there is insufficient COD present in the anaerobic effluent 16 to sufficiently denitrify the nitrate, extra COD substance can be added. This supply can be supplied via a supply line 9a into the return line 8, in particular in the case of a gaseous COD substance. If the COD substance 10 is liquid-shaped, the supply can take place via a supply line such as 9a in the return line or directly into the anoxic compartment 4, as schematically indicated by line 9b. The supply line 9a or 9b will be connected to a so-called COD source. This source can be an external tank or an external supply pipe. According to the invention, however, it is preferable to use the gas collection means 5 for this source 15 and thus to feed biogas collected in the gas collection means 5, at least a part thereof, to the anoxic compartment, preferably via the return line 8. To this end, the gas collection means are pipe 9 connected to pipe 9a. It should be noted, however, that the use of biogas collected in the gas collection means does not preclude the supply of COD sources from externally. This is made visible in the Figure by pulling the pipe 9a to the right past the point of connection of the pipe 9.
To explain the concepts of COD source and "COD substance"; the gas collection hoods form the COD source and the biogas collected therein forms "COD substance", also known as COD. COD is a concept known to those skilled in the art that stands for chemical oxygen consumption. According to the invention, the COD / COD substance in particular comprises carbon, but also carbonless COD is conceivable.
It is to be noted that in the illustrated example, the return system 8 returns aerobic biomass comprising effluent [i.e., a mixture of biomass and effluent] to the intermediate compartment. However, it is also possible to use end effluent 18, which has been stripped of aerobic biomass, and to add aerobic biomass, for example collected in the separator 19, to it. However, this is less efficient because it leads to a much larger constructed separator 19.
