Abstract
Description
The control of pests in land plots is generally only successful if specialists are involved. The elimination of muskrats in particular requires the necessary effort, also from professionals with the necessary knowledge and experience. The control of muskrats, however, is of particular importance, particularly in wetlands, for the preservation of ground plots near surface water, such as dyke bodies and plots of farmlands.
Muskrats inhabit caves that are usually located just below ground level and near the slope on the water side of the plot of land. Such a hole has one or more entrances / exits in the slope that are situated below the water level. For example, the muskrat can reach the central part of its burrow, which is arranged above the water level, from the water of, for example, a river or ditch via a naturally camouflaged entrance / exit. By providing caves and aisle system 15 the muskrat weakens the soil structure of the plot, resulting in subsidence, landslides and possibly even dyke breaches that can cause flooding in the hinterland. For guaranteeing the function of dike bodies and polder plots, the maintenance of a substantially homogeneous soil structure is therefore a concern, also for the government.
In order to somewhat control the population of muskrats, specialized rat catchers are deployed who inspect the relevant plots and thereby look for traces of the muskrats, such as loose grass stalks on the water surface near the slope. If the presence of a muskrat or its burrow is suspected, the rat catcher examines the part of the slope below the water level, looking for an entrance / exit to the burrow. Upon finding such an input / output, the rat catcher places a clamp or cage so that the muskrat is switched off when passing the input / output.
The method for eradicating muskrats described here is not only cumbersome and time-consuming, but also expensive and sometimes counterproductive because in this way individuals from a population of muskrats are sometimes killed who, by their presence, prevent an explosive growth of the local population. Furthermore, other animals, for example animals with a protected status or frequently occurring aquatic animals, such as ducks, can fall victim to such clamps or cages.
The invention has for its object to provide a method in which vermin in plots of land can be controlled more efficiently. To this end, the invention provides a method for scanning a parcel of land, wherein, with the aid of non-contact measurements, disturbances in a substantially homogeneous subsurface of the parcel are detected in preparation for the eradication of vermin present in the subsoil.
By scanning a parcel with the aid of non-contact measurements and thereby detecting disturbances in the substantially homogeneous subsoil of the parcel, for example soil, sand or peat, the burrows and / or the vermin themselves can be located more efficiently than with the manual method. The information regarding the disturbances can then serve as preparation for the actual extermination of the vermin, for example with the aid of clamps, traps, stems, cages, and / or gasification and / or electrocution means, since the disturbances are vermin, and / or represent corridors and / or burrows of the vermin. Switching off the pests can therefore be carried out much more efficiently and therefore cheaper.
The method is preferably used to prepare for the eradication of muskrats or other rodents for which control is required in order to limit the economic damage of plots adjacent to surface water.
By detecting disturbances that are larger than preset dimensions, preferably substantially approximately 1 dm x approximately 1 dm x approximately 1 dm, a method has been obtained in which relatively large specimens of vermin, such as muskrats, can be detected relatively easily since no attention is paid to minor disruptions in the subsurface that betray the presence of other life forms, such as insects and / or field mice.
In an advantageous embodiment, the method according to the invention comprises determining the location of a detected disturbance, so that information about the presence of a muskrat can be used when switching off the animals, possibly at a later time. The location can be recorded manually by taking notes on a plot of the plot. However, it is also possible to automate this process, in particular when using a computer-controlled positioning system, such as GPS. By transferring the locations of detected disturbances to a pest-killing device, for example a device with electrocution agents, an effective and efficient method for controlling pests has been obtained. It is of course also possible to transfer the traced locations to a specialized rat catcher, who can therefore work in a more targeted manner.
The method for detecting disturbances in the substrate preferably comprises a more coarse scanning procedure and a more fine scanning procedure, so that both a global, generally relatively fast mode and a more detailed, generally relatively slow mode are available. As a result, a plot of land of choice can be scanned relatively quickly and coarsely, or relatively slowly, but with relatively high resolution.
1026485 41026485 4
By initially applying the coarse scanning procedure, and by activating the more fine scanning procedure upon detection of a disturbance in the substrate, a method has been obtained whereby the speed of the coarse method can be elegantly combined with the relatively high resolution which results when applying the more fine scanning procedure.
The coarse scanning procedure may, for example, comprise a ground radar system or another system using radar or radio waves. Hereby, use can advantageously be made of such systems which have been developed in the first instance for the detection of, for example, land mines and / or archaeological remains.
The fine scanning procedure may comprise, for example, an infrared system which, because of smaller wavelengths used, can generate an image with a higher resolution than radio waves. However, it is also possible to use only one detection system, in which parameters, such as characteristics of the transmitted frequency band, can be varied, so that a coarse and a fine mode can thereby be obtained. In general, systems are applicable in which electromagnetic waves are emitted which, after interaction with the substrate, such as reflection and refraction, are partially detected with sensors, whereafter an image of the substrate can be obtained on the basis of the detected signal. Interpreting the detected signal into an image can take place both visually and with the aid of computer systems.
The invention also relates to the use of a device for scanning a plot of land.
The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments described here. Many variants are possible.
Thus, for the operation of detection systems, it is not always necessary for an electromagnetic signal to be transmitted first.
1026485 51026485 5
So-called passive systems, in which part of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as heat radiation, is collected and processed without the active emission of waves, can of course also be applied. Furthermore, a detection system for detecting disturbances in the subsurface, such as a ground radar system or an infrared system, can also be used in combination with a visual inspection.
Such variants will be clear to those skilled in the art and are understood to fall within the scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
