Abstract
Description
Torsion-resistant U-shaped spring element made of a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite material.
Introduction 5 The invention relates to a spring element which forms a torsionally rigid connection between two telescopic cylindrical shafts which can slide over each other in the longitudinal direction. For various known applications, such as a telescopic suspension fork of a bicycle or a suspension nose wheel undercarriage of an aircraft, it is necessary that a certain longitudinal movement of the shafts is possible while the shafts are not rotated relative to each other. Various solutions are known for this problem, in which mechanisms or geometries make this rotation impossible. A disadvantage of these solutions are the high costs, both of manufacturing costs and the in-service costs as a result of the necessary maintenance. The favorable relationship between torsional stiffness and bending stiffness of the composite materials used in the present invention and the consequent lack of moving parts and the inexpensive options for producing the parts without the need for precise fits and tolerances are the advantages of the present invention. This solution is also lightweight, the materials used are very insensitive to attack by fatigue, moisture and chemicals and the spring characteristic of the spring can be adjusted to the requirements.

Huidige oplossingenCurrent solutions
The first known type of current solutions for torsion transfer between telescopic moving shafts consists of the use of a so-called "torsion scissors", as used in aircraft landing gear. A rigid arm is attached to each of the two shafts via a hinge with its hinge line perpendicular to the axis centerline. The two arms are hinged together at the end, a variant of this solution is the use of a hinged suspended round bent steel leaf spring (U-shape) in which the middle hinge point can be omitted because the rotation around this hinge is provided by bending of the leaf spring.
The second known solution is to use one or more keyways between the two shafts in the longitudinal direction of the shafts. These splines allow 15 longitudinal movements but prevent rotations of the shafts relative to each other.
The third known solution is to prevent rotation by ovalizing the cross section of the shafts.
Een voorbeeld van de laatste oplossing is vaak te vinden in voorvorken van motoren en ATB’s.The fourth solution is to double the axes, if they are arranged in parallel there can only be a longitudinal movement but no rotation. An example of the latter solution can often be found in front forks of motorcycles and ATBs.
The disadvantage of many current solutions are the high manufacturing and operating costs. Non-round parts are expensive to produce. Hinges must be made accurately in order to (continue to) function without play. Duplicating telescopic shafts is often impossible, and keyways involve complex, accurate and expensive operations.

The present invention is a torsionally rigid slap U-shaped element of thermoplastic fiber-reinforced composite material that can transmit torque between two or more telescopic axes with, but also without hinged connections at the ends. Longitudinal movement of the shafts is mutually possible and such longitudinal movements result in a spring force in the spring element directed in the longitudinal direction of the shafts. This force can be used to bounce off a mass. It is possible to influence the spring characteristic with the 10 end stops of the U-shaped spring element.
Application of the present invention is provided, inter alia, in the suspension of wheel suspensions of various road vehicles such as bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, cars, trains, etc. There are also applications in mechanical engineering where drive shafts have a non-constant length or where vibrations and / whether inaccuracies should be corrected.
A preferred embodiment of the torsionally stiff bending flap U-shaped spring element is shown in figure 1. It is a torsionally stiff bending flap spring element of composite material which is used in the front fork of a bicycle. This version is lightweight, maintenance-free, relatively inexpensive due to the lack of expensive accurate and wear-sensitive moving or rotating parts, compact and has a high-tech image due to the material used (carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic).

Technische beschrijvingTechnical description
The invention consists of a torsionally rigid slap U-shaped element (1) of thermoplastic fiber-reinforced composite material which can transfer torsion between two telescopic axles (2) without, but possibly also with hinged connections at the ends. Elastic bending of the U-shaped leaf spring (1) makes longitudinal movement of the shafts mutually possible and such longitudinal movements result in a spring force in the spring element directed in the longitudinal direction of the shafts (2). This force can for instance be used to spring off a mass. It is possible to influence the spring characteristic with the shape of the end stops (3) of the U-shaped spring element (1). When pressed, the spring element (1) will abut against this, whereby the contact point will behave as a clamping. This reduces the effective spring length and the spring element 15 (1) will behave stiffer. With the curvature of this end stop (3), the spring behavior can be "tuned".
The torsionally rigid flexural U-shaped spring element (1) is made of composite material, a combination of a load-bearing fiber (such as 20 carbon, aramid or glass) embedded in a supporting thermoplastic matrix material (such as PP, PE, PA, PET, PEI, etc ...).
The orientation of the fibers is chosen such that the shear stiffness is high relative to the bending stiffness. The greatest shear stiffness: 25 flexural stiffness ratio is achieved with a material with fibers at angles of + 45 ° and -45 ° (figure 2), this material structure is used in preferred embodiment 1. If a specific application makes it necessary by adding layers in the Establishment the bending stiffness to be increased.
An additional advantage of the use of composite material is the great resistance to metals against fatigue failure. Also the low specific gravity, the linear elastic material behavior to fracture (especially thermoplastic composites have a high elongation at break) and the great insensitivity to influences of moisture and chemicals are favorable.
