- 1 - PN 8687 WERKWIJZE VOOR DE BEREIDING VAN RuHX (H-, HPR,), EN DE TOEPASSING HIERVAN ALS HYDROGENERINGSKATALYSATOR 5- 1 - PN 8687 PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF RuHX (H-, HPR-) AND ITS USE AS A HYDROGENATION CATALYST 5
Soc., Vol.113, pagina 2315 (1991). The invention relates to a process for the preparation of RuHX (H) 2 (PR3) 2, wherein X is a halogen and R is an alkyl or a cycloalkyl group with up to 7 carbon atoms. Such a preparation has been described by Chaudret et al. In J.Am.Chem.Soc., Vol. 113, page 2315 (1991). Chaudret et al describe herein a method in which RuH2 (H2) (tricyclohexylphosphine) 2 is contacted with phenyl or methyl iodide or with methylene chloride.
A drawback of the known method is that complex and poorly accessible starting materials are used herein.
The object of the invention is to provide a method which does not have this drawback.
This object is achieved by contacting a mixture of RuX3.xH20 and PR3 dissolved in an alkanol of 1-20 carbon atoms with hydrogen at a pressure between 0.1 and 20 MPa.
This ensures that RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 can be formed from simple and easily accessible starting materials.
The halogens (X) can be Cl, Br or I. Preferably X in the method according to the invention is Cl. Of the Ru halides, RuC13.xH20 is the most accessible compound.
Bij voorkeur is R een cyclohexyl- of een isopropylgroep.R is an alkyl group or a cycloalkyl group with up to 7 carbon atoms. Preferably R is a cyclohexyl or an isopropyl group.
35 In de werkwijze volgens de uitvinding wordenIn the method according to the invention
RuX3.xH20 en PR3, opgelost in een alkanol met 1-20 koolstofatomen. Bij voorkeur is de alkanol n-butanol.RuX3.xH20 and PR3, dissolved in an alkanol of 1-20 carbon atoms. Preferably, the alkanol is n-butanol.
Due to the oxygen sensitivity of phosphines, all operations are preferably performed under 1004993-2 - a nitrogen atmosphere.
A trialkylamine can also be added to the mixture. This ensures that the HCl formed during the reaction is bound. This not only increases the yield, but also prevents stress corrosion of the reaction vessel in which the reaction is carried out. Preferably triethylamine is added to the mixture because triethylamine is inexpensive and easy to process.
In the method according to the invention the solution of RuX3.xH20 and PR3 is contacted with hydrogen at a pressure between 0.1 and 20 MPa. Preferably the hydrogen pressure is between 4 and 8 MPa. It has been found that a good yield of RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 is obtained at this pressure.
The temperature at which the solution of RuX3.xH20 and PR3 is brought into contact with hydrogen can be chosen between very wide limits, but is generally between 0 and 100 ° C.
It has been found that at this temperature the yield of RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 is greatest.
The time during which the above solution is contacted with hydrogen can be chosen by the skilled person, depending on the temperature. Preferably, the solution is contacted with hydrogen for 0.5-5 hours. The solution is then cooled to form a precipitate of RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2.
The invention also relates to a process for hydrogenating a polymer in the presence of the RuHX (H) 2 (PR3) 2 obtained according to the invention.
Nadeel van 1004993 - 3 -Ru complexes as catalyst are known from DE-A-4,139,476, in which RuHCl (CO) (triphenylphosphine) 3 is used as a homogeneous catalyst for hydrogenating a polymer. Disadvantage of 1004993 - 3 -
By using the RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 obtained according to the method of the invention, this drawback is wholly or at least partially eliminated. This hydrogenation can be carried out by keeping the solution of the unsaturated polymer under a pressure of 0.1 to 20 Mpa and preferably 1-6 Mpa of hydrogen at a temperature ranging between 20 and 250 ° C for 15 minutes to 3 hours. C, and preferably is between 100 and 150 ° C.
Bij voorkeur wordt het volgens de uitvinding verkregen 20 RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 toegepast in de hydrogener ing van NBR.Hydrogenation reactions in which the RuHX (H) 2 (PR3) 2 obtained according to the invention can suitably be used are, for example, the hydrogenations of polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene-butadiene copolymers and nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR). The RuHX (H2) (PR3) 2 obtained according to the invention is preferably used in the hydrogenation of NBR.
A hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber is described in US-A-5,057,581. Herein RuHCl (CO) (tricyclohexylphosphine) 2 is used as a catalyst. A drawback of the catalyst used in US-A-5,057,581 is that it is prepared either with NaBH4 (methods (a) and (b)) or via a method (c) which has a very low yield. The advantage of the hydrogenation process in the presence of the catalyst prepared according to the process according to the invention is that the preparation of this catalyst does not require the safety measures required for working with NaBH4 and that the yield of the preparation of this catalyst is much greater than the preparation according to the known method. A further advantage of the use of RuHX (H) 2 (PR3) 2 in the hydrogenation of NBR is that the nitrile group hardly reduces the activity of this catalyst 1004993-4 and that the nitrile group itself is hardly, if at all, affected by this catalyst. affected. The nitrile content therefore remains high and with it the properties such as the oil resistance of the rubber.
Solvents in which this hydrogenation can take place are, for example, toluene chloroform, chlorobenzene, dichloromethane. Crosslinking of the NBR rubber occurs during the hydrogenation in the above solvents. Cross-linking can be avoided by adding a Lewis or Bronsted acid, an amine or ammonia.
Preferably, the hydrogenation is carried out in a ketone. The advantage of carrying out the hydrogenation in a ketone is that no cross-linking occurs. A suitable ketone is, for example, butanone.

%: Ru = 13,7 % (14,4 %), Cl = 5 % (5,1 %), P = 8,2 % (8,9 %), C = 58,6 % (61,7 %), H = 9,3 % (9,9 %), 30 waarbij de theoretische waarden voor de in1 gram of RuCl3.xH20, 0.3 grams of tricyclohexylphosphine and 0.7 grams of triethylamine were dissolved in 40 grams of butanol under nitrogen. The solution was then kept at 6 ° C under hydrogen for 6 hours at 70 ° C. During cooling an orange precipitate is formed, the yield of which, after drying under vacuum, 85 mol. % appears to be based on the amount of ruthenium. The elemental analysis of this precipitate gave the following result, expressed in wt. %: Ru = 13.7% (14.4%), Cl = 5% (5.1%), P = 8.2% (8.9%), C = 58.6% (61.7%) ), H = 9.3% (9.9%), where the theoretical values for the in

In a 100 ml Parr autoclave, 10 grams of a polymer listed in Table 1 were dissolved in 60 grams of toluene under nitrogen. 0.01 gram of 5 RuHCl (H) 2 (tricyclohexylphosphine) 2 was added to this. The autoclave was then flushed with hydrogen by pressuring it to 6 MPa three times. The autoclave was heated under pressure to 6MPa hydrogen pressure to 130 ° C and held under these conditions for 4 hours.
After this, the autoclave was cooled to room temperature and the partially precipitated polymer was poured into 500 grams of acetone. The polymer was separated and dried under vacuum at room temperature. The degree of hydrogenation was determined by 1 H-NMR at 70 ° C in C2D2C14. The results are shown in Table 1. This shows that with RuHCL (H) 2 (tricyclohexylphosphine) 2 a very high degree of hydrogenation can be achieved.

A 100 ml Parr autoclave was charged with 66 g of a 10% NBR solution (nysyn 30-5, a 30/70 mixture of acrylonitrile and butadiene with a Moony viscosity of 5 min.) In butanone. The autoclave was filled under nitrogen. To this solution, 0.5 gram of a solution of 0.3 gram of RuHCl (H) 2 (tricyclohexylphosphine) 2 in 9.7 grams of chlorobenzene was added. Subsequently, the autoclave 10 was purged three times with hydrogen at a pressure of 6 MPa, after which the autoclave was heated under pressure (see Table 2) and kept under these conditions for some time (see Table 2). The autoclave was then cooled to room temperature and the solvent was evaporated in vacuo and the degree of hydrogenation was determined by XH-NMR. The results in Table 2 show that the hydrogenation is preferably carried out at a hydrogen pressure above 3 MPa and a temperature of at least 140 ° C.
