BETWEEN POLARIZERS CROSSING EACH OTHER AT RIGHT ANGLES, COMPLETE EXTINCTION IS ATTAINED BY PROVIDING ONE OR BOTH POLARIZERS (8, 9) IN A TWISTED NEMATIC, LIQUID-CRYSTALLINE DISPLAY CELL WITH RETARDATION FOILS (9A, 9B) WHICH EACH HAVE AN OPTICAL AXIS WHICH EXTENDS IN ONE OF THE PLANES OF POLARIZATION AND IS TILTED RELATIVE TO THE ASSOCIATED PLANE OF THE SUBSTRATE. IN ADDITION, A REDUCTION OF THE ANGLE- DEPENDENCE AND AN IMPROVED GREY-SCALE INVERSION ARE ACHIEVED IN THE DISPLAY DEVICE. FOR THE RETARDATION FOILS USE IS PREFERABLY MADE OF A POLYMERIZED OR VITRIFIED CRYSTALLINE MATERIAL.@@(FIG. 1)
