Abstract

THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PREPAYMENT OF TELEPHONE (10) CALL CHARGES USING A CHIP CARD (14) AND A REMOTE SERVER (15).MORE PARTICULARLY, IT RELATES TO A USE OF A CHIP CARD (14) FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSE AND THEN APPROPRIATE SIGNALS SENT TO A REMOTE SERVER (15) TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF CALLING TIME PERMITTED BY THE AVAILABLE BALANCE. THE METHOD OF PROVIDING PREPAID TELEPHONE CALLS COMPRISING: LIFTING THE HANDSET, WHICH TRIGGERS THE REMOTE SERVER (15) TO REQUEST THE CHIP CARD (14) WITH INDIVIDUAL CODE TO BE INSERTED INTO THE CHIP CARD (14) READER OF THE TELEPHONE APPARATUS (10);SENDING THE INDIVIDUAL CODE TO THE REMOTE SERVER (15) TO ENSURE BALANCE BEFORE SENDING SIGNAL TO REQUEST USER (12) TO DIAL NUMBER TO DESIRED DESTINATION WHEREBY FREQUENCY SHIFT KEYING (FSK) TRANSMISSION TRANSMITS MESSAGES BETWEEN THE SERVER (15) AND THE TELEPHONE APPARATUS (10); TRIGGERING THE CALL TO A DESIRED DESTINATION; DECREASING THE BALANCE IN THE ACCOUNT ACCORDINGLY UNTIL EITHER THE CALL ENDS OR THE REMAINING BALANCE IN THE ACCOUNT FINISHES. ALTERNATIVELY, IN PLACES WHERE FREE LOCAL TELEPHONE (10) CALLS ARE AVAILABLE,THE METHOD COMPRISES OF: LIFTING THE HANDSET, PRESSING THE PREPROGRAMMED PUSH BUTTON, WHICH TRIGGERS THE CPE (10) TO DIAL THE REMOTE SERVER (15). ONCE THE SERVER (15) IS ACTIVATED, THE REST OF THE CALL SEQUENCE FOLLOWS THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT.(FIG. 2)
