Abstract

The present invention relates to the improved composition of a multilayer plastic film (3 layers) with oxygen and moisture barrier properties as well as acceptable inter-layer adhesion for use in food packaging. Said film is composed of 3 layers: a central layer of polar resin debarrera to the oxygen adhered to two external layers based on mixtures of polyethylene with polyethylene containing low grafting levels of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride. The polar barrier resin is preferably a polycarboxylamide (Nylon) or an ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). The polyethylenes can be low or high density polyethylenes (LDPE or HDPE) or copolymers of ethylene with alpha-olefins (LLDPE). the dicarboxylic acid anhydride is preferably maleic anhydride

Description

COATED 3-LAYER FILM FOR FOOD PACKAGING D E S C R I N C: The present invention relates to the improved composition of a 3-layer co-extruded plastic film with oxygen and water vapor barrier properties, good inter-layer adhesion and ease of application of printing inks on its surface. Said film is particularly effective for the packaging of foods that require protection from oxygen and moisture to increase shelf life. This film for food packaging is made by the coextrusion process and consists of three layers of resins: a central layer of oxygen barrier resin and two outer layers of water vapor barrier resins. For example, the oxygen barrier core layer can be a resin selected from the group of polycarboxylamides (Nylon) (I) or ethylene / vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOH) (II) and the two external moisture barrier layers composed of polyethylene blends. (III) with polyethylene grafted with unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride (IV). The polyethylenes being either low or high density or copolymers of ethylene with l-butene, l-hexene or 1-octene and the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride preferably a maleic anhydride. The composition of the polyethylene mixture of the outer layers consists essentially of 50 to 95% by weight of (III) with 5 to 50% by weight of (IV). Where (III) is formed by a polyethylene selected from the group consisting of low density, high density polyethylenes or copolymers of ethylene with 1-butene, 1-hexene or 1-octene having a density in the range of 0.912 to 0.965 and an index of fluidity in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 g / lOmin. On the other hand (IV) is formed by a modified polyethylene which can be a low density polyethylene, high density or copolymer of ethylene with 1-butene, 1-hexene or 1-octene having a density in the range of 0.912 to 0.965 and an index of fluidity between 0.5 to 4.0 g / 10min., which has been modified by grafting an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, containing 0.1 to 0. 0% by weight of said anhydride in the composition. The total thickness of the film is in the range of 45 to 135 microns and the thickness of each layer varies between 5 and 25 microns for the central layer and between 20 and 55 microns for each of the outer layers.
The total content of the oxygen (I) or (II) barrier resin varies between 10 and 25% by weight and of the moisture barrier resins formed by the mixture of (III) and (IV), between 75 and 90% by weight.
