Description
OSTOMY SELFTABLE SACK
«DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to ostomy devices the type which includes a receptacle or bag for collection of waste, and more particularly with a bag such which is adapted to adhere directly to the body and is therefore self-supporting or self-supporting and which is shaped to follow more closely the contours of the body for comfort. Certain surgical procedures known as colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy result in an opening in the abdominal wall, called a stoma, which allows waste to be discharged from within a body cavity. Since a patient has no control over the discharge of waste, it is often necessary for patients who have experienced these surgical procedures to use an ostomy device to protect the stoma and collect the waste material as it is discharged. For years, ostomy devices of a variety of different types and constructions have been used. Various adhesive materials have been developed to increase the usefulness and resistance capacity of the adhesives. The conventional device includes a receptacle or waste collection bag connected to a front plate coated with adhesive which serves to secure the bag to the body. The bag includes first and second thin film walls which are sealed by heat welding along the periphery to form the outline of the bag. The faceplate is provided with a friendly or harmless adhesive to the skin, in order to seal the bag to the skin surrounding the stoma. The front plate and the bag have aligned openings which are adapted to receive the stoma. However, because the sac is much larger than the front plate and is connected to the front plate only along the welded ring that surrounds the opening to receive the stoma, in the sac, it tends to hang from the body, like a bag. When mounted in this way, the entire weight of the sac is experienced at the site of union with the body, in the area of the stoma, which generates an unpleasant sensation. The invention solves this disadvantage when the wall of the bag adheres directly to the body, over a substantial area of the wall surface. This eliminates the hanging of the bag and distributes the weight more evenly. In addition, conventional bags are formed without any consideration regarding the contours of the body. They are normally mounted in a position in which the major axis of the sac is parallel to the vertical axis of the body. In the present invention, the bag configuration is designed to better follow the contours of the body, resulting in a more comfortable fit. Therefore, it is a main object of the present invention to provide an ostomy bag which is self-supporting or self-supporting so that it does not hang and, thus, the weight of the bag is distributed in a more uniform manner over a larger area of the bag. body. Another object of the present invention is to provide an ostomy bag which has a shape that conforms to the contours of the body and is therefore more comfortable to use. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, an ostomy device is provided that includes a waste collection bag having a wall adapted to be placed adjacent to the body. An adhesive layer is placed on the wall of the bag and is adapted to fix the wall of the bag directly to the body.
In a preferred embodiment, the adhesive layer substantially covers the entire surface of the wall. In a second preferred embodiment, the adhesive layer covers a section of the surface of the wall along the periphery of the bag. The bag may have a substantially oval configuration, with the major axis adapted to extend laterally. The lower edge of the bag may include a substantially linear section. Alternatively, the lower edge of the bag may include a substantially inwardly serrated section. The bag may have a substantially circular configuration. In this case, the lower edge of the bag may include a substantially linear section or also an inwardly indented section. A collar with an adhesive backing can be provided. The collar is fixed to the wall that surrounds the stoma that receives the entrance. In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, an ostomy device is provided that includes a waste collection bag having a wall adapted to be positioned adjacent to the body. Means are provided for fixing the bag to the body in an adhesive manner. The bag has a substantially oval configuration and is adapted to be fixed to the body with its major axis which extends laterally. * The bag may have a lower edge with a substantially linear section. Alternatively, the lower edge may have a substantially inwardly serrated section. According to another aspect of the present invention, an ostomy device is provided that includes a waste collection bag having a wall. Means are provided for adhesively securing the bag to the body. The bag has a substantially circular configuration. The bag may have a lower edge with a substantially linear section. Alternatively, the lower edge may have a substantially inwardly serrated section. With these and all other objectives which may appear in the following, the present invention relates to a self-standing ostomy bag, as described in the following specification, as set forth in the appended claims and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. , in which like numbers refer to equal parts, and in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a first preferred embodiment of the bag of the present invention, as it appears when it is attached to the body; Figure 2 is a view of a conventional one-piece ostomy device, as it appears when attached to the body, - Figure 3 is a side, cross-sectional view, taken along line 3-3 of the figure l; Figure 4 is a plan view of another form of the first preferred embodiment of the present invention, as it appears when it is attached to the body; Figure 5 is a side cross-sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a plan view of a second preferred embodiment of the present invention as it appears when attached to the body, and Figure 7 is a plan view of another form of the second preferred embodiment of the present invention as it appears when It is fixed to the body. As seen in the figures, the ostomy device of the present invention comprises a bag, generally designated with the letter A, which is formed of two sheets of flexible and thin film. The film sheets form the walls 10 and 12 of the bag. Preferably, the film is made of materials which possess the properties of being impermeable to moisture, impervious to odor and which is capable of being heat sealed or pulse welded. Suitable materials include polyethylene, copolymers of polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate, copolymers of polyethylene acetate, copolymers of vinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride, and laminates thereof. The walls of the bag preferably have a thickness of approximately 51 to 102 micrometers (2 to 4 thousandths). The walls are sealed around the periphery to provide a waste receptacle or bag. The end of the bag can be closed or opened, as desired. The wall 10, which is designed to be placed adjacent to the body, generally designated with the letter B, may have a surface texture friendly or innocuous to the skin. This surface is provided with a layer of adhesive so that it can be fixed directly to the skin. The adhesive layer can cover the entire surface of the wall 10, as shown by the layer 14 illustrated in Figures 1, 3, 6 and 7, or it can be a layer 15 which is placed in a section located in the periphery of the bag, for example along the periphery, as illustrated in figures 4 and 5. In any case, a substantial portion of the surface of the wall 10 is covered with the adhesive so that the bag does not hang or it bends but rather the entire wall is retained adjacent to the body, which distributes the weight of the bag more evenly over a larger area of the body. The adhesive layer on the wall 10 of the bag can be made of any pressure sensitive adhesive suitable for use on human skin and capable of supporting the weight of the device. Preferably, the adhesive consists of an elastomeric substance such as polyisobutylene containing one or more hydrocolloids, as described by Chen in U.S. Patent No. 3,339,546, by Chen et al., In U.S. Patent No. 4,192,785, and by Pawelchak in U.S. Patent No. 4,393,080. Additionally, this layer may include a block copolymer of the styrene type as described by Doyle et al. in U.S. Patent No. 4,551,490. The adhesive layer will have a thickness from about 508 to 1778 micrometers (20 to about 70 mils). For additional support and improved sealing of the skin surrounding the stoma, a microporous collar 16 can be provided. The collar 16 is welded or otherwise secured to the wall 10 of the bag, which surrounds the stoma which receives the inlet opening 18. Preferably, the weld will be in the form of a ring concentric to the opening 18. The collar 18 consists of a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer punched on the backing. Preferably, the adhesive layer has a thickness of 102 micrometers (4 mils). The adhesive layer may be a microporous acrylic adhesive as described by Copeland in US Pat. No. 3, 121,021, a microporous hydrocolloid adhesive as described by Cuento in U.S. Patent No. 4,427,727, or an adhesive containing polyisobutylene hydrocolloid as described by Chen in U.S. Patent No. 3,339,546, by Chen et al., In the patent No. 4,192,785, by Pawelchak in U.S. Patent No. 4,393,080, or may be an adhesive composition containing a block copolymer of the styrene type in addition to the polyisobutylene and the hydrocolloids, as described by Doyle et al. in U.S. Patent No. 4,551,490. The backing or support may include a nonwoven polyethylene material. A perforated EVA / polyethylene film approximately 51 micrometers (2 mils) thick may be attached to a surface of the nonwoven material. The adhesive layer is punched on the film. The other surface of the non-woven material is welded to the wall 10 of the bag. The shape of the bag is different from that of a conventional bag, as illustrated in Figure 2. The conventional bag tends to be elongated in a direction parallel to the axis of body B, a shape which does not take body contours into account of the user. On the other hand, the bag of the present invention has a substantially oval shape, as seen in Figures 6 and 7, or a substantially circular shape, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. Either oval or circular, the edge lower may have a linear section 20 or a section 22 serrated inwardly. When it is oval, the bag is adapted to be fixed to the body with its longer axis or main axis which extends laterally. It will now be appreciated that the present invention relates to an ostomy device with a waste collection bag having a wall and an adhesive layer on the wall so that it is fixed to the wall directly to the body. The assembly of the bag in this way eliminates the hanging and distributes the weight more evenly. In addition, the bag is shaped to follow the contour of the body for a more comfortable fit.
Although only a limited number of preferred embodiments have been described for purposes of illustration, it is clear that many variations and modifications can be made thereto. It is intended to cover all of these variations and modifications which are within the scope of the present invention, as defined by the following claims: It is noted that in relation to this date, the best method known by the applicant to carry the practice said invention, is the conventional for the manufacture of the objects to which it refers.
