Abstract

A plurality of bags, sleeves, or pouches are detachably joined and provided on a roll. The bags, sleeves, or pouches may be made by joining or by folding the material and forming spaced seal and tear lines in the material. The seal and tear lines are formed in the material by a seal bar having a saw tooth surface which forms alternating sealed and cut portions and uncut portions in the material.

Description

PLURALITY OF BAGS, AND THEIR MANUFACTURING METHOD FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates, in general, to a plurality of bags, sleeves or sacks. More specifically, the invention relates to a plurality of bags, sleeves or sacks that can be separated from each other along tear lines, and the method for manufacturing these bags, sleeves and sacks.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Mass production plants such as the electronics industry, automotive parts, furniture and small parts manufacturing pack small items in bags, sleeves or cushioned sacks for shipment and sale. Although the material of the bag can be film, foam or a paper or film laminate, if the article is fragile, the material is preferably cushioned. Individual bags or pouches of this type are described in US Patent Nos. 4,087,002 and 4,011,798. These individual bags, sleeves or bags of the prior art require time and labor for their choice, filling and sealing. To solve some of these problems in the prior art it is possible to provide various bags in a roll with each bag separated from the adjacent bags by a separation line. These bags are formed from a sheet of film folded on itself or two film sheets separated one on the other. A wide seal or a pair of stamps is formed between each bag, where each wide seal or a seal of each pair forms a side seal of one of the adjacent bags. Enter a pair of seals or along the center line of a wide seal a separation line is formed, such as a line of perforations. The wide seal or pair of seals in the prior art requires a considerable amount of material when a few million bags or sacks are manufactured. You want to use a different combination seal and tear line to save material.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed to a plurality of bags, sleeves or bags that are joined together along separation or tear lines. The bags, sleeves or bags are formed from material such as sheets of multiple sealed air bags such as, for example, the Astro-Cell® air cushion produced by Pactiv Corporation of Lake Forest, Illinois, foam, film or laminates They include paper, film and foamed laminates. The material is sealed to form individual pouches or bags with an open-mouth cavity or tubes with open ends or sleeves such as Sleeve It® products manufactured by Pactiv Corporation of Lake Forest, Illinois. The seals are formed by a sawtooth sealing bar that seals the sides of the bags, sleeves or adjacent bags at the same time, and forms a separation or tear line in the seal. Having seals and separation or tearing lines in the same place requires less material than in the prior art. When millions of bags, sleeves or sacks are manufactured, these material savings generate substantial savings in cost. If desired, each pouch or bag may include a flap with adhesive, co-adhesives or other types of closures so that the flap can be bent over the open mouth to close the cavity.
The bags, sleeves or bags are provided in a continuous strip with tearing lines or separation between them. In this way, the plurality of bags, sleeves or bags can be provided in a roll allowing a user to tear one or more bags, sleeves or bags from the roll quickly and easily.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent upon reading the following detailed description together with the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roll of bags, sleeves or bags constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention; Figure 2 is a schematic sample of the method of manufacturing the bags, sleeves or bags of Figure 1; YFigure 3 is a perspective view of a sealing bar used in the method shown in Figure 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED MODALITIES Referring to Figure 1, a plurality of bags, sleeves or individual bags 10 are shown connected. The plurality of bags, sleeves or bags 10 is shown on a roll 12 that allows a user to quickly and easily take one or several bags, sleeves or bags 10 from the roll 12. Other forms of storage of bags, sleeves or bags 10 They can also be used as stacking or folding one over another.
Each bag, sleeve or bag 10 is formed from a coil of material 19 which can be a sheet or film of a plurality of air bubbles enclosed such as the Astro-Cell® air cushion produced by Pactiv Corporation of Lake Forest, Illinois, foam, film or laminates that include paper, film or foamed laminates. Each bag, sleeve or bag 10 is defined by a first side wall 16 and a second side wall 18 which can be formed by bending the material 19 on itself as shown in Figure 2, or it can be two pieces of material placed one on top of the other. other. Each bag or pouch 10 thus formed includes a base 20, a first sealed side 22, a second sealed side 24 and an open mouth 26 that provides access in a cavity between the first side wall 16 and the second side wall 18. If a sleeve 10 is manufactured, the base 20 is open to define a second open mouth 26. Objects that are placed in each bag or bag 10 can be inserted into the cavity through the mouth 26.
If desired, the bags, sleeves or sacks 10 can be formed so that the second side wall 18 extends beyond the first side wall 16 to define a flap 30. The flap 30 can be folded over the open mouth 26 to close the cavity and retain the objects in the cavity. The flap 30 may be sealed in a configuration bent by adhesive, co-adhesive or other types of closures 32 (Figure 2) applied to the interior of the flap 30 in a location to secure the flap 30 to the first side wall 16 when the flap 30 folded over the first side wall 16. If adhesive is used, a release sheet 34 is placed over the adhesive 32 to protect the adhesive when it is not in use. Once the objects have been placed in the cavity of the bag, sleeve or bag 10, the release sheet 30 is removed and the flap 30 is folded over the first side wall 16 and the adhesive 34 keeps the flap 30 in the closed position secured to the first side wall 16 by closing the mouth 26.
The bags, sleeves or individual bags 10 are separated from each other by sealing and tearing lines 36 which can be lines of perforations or weakened portions of the first side wall 16 and the second side wall 18. The bags and sacks of the prior art have a wide seal between adjacent bags with a line of perforations along the center of the sealing area. This wide sealing area provides side seals on the adjacent bags or sacks and a line of perforations between the side seals along which the adjacent bags can be separated. Another seal of the prior art is a double seal that is formed by two parallel seals each forming a side seal of an adjoining bag and a line of perforations between the parallel seals. In contrast, the sealing and tearing lines 36 are individual lines of alternating sealed and cut portions and uncut portions formed by a sawtooth seal bar 37 (Figure 3). The serrated saw bar 37 has an elongated body that tapers from an upper surface 37A to a lower surface 37B. A plurality of teeth or raised portions 39 alternating with the recesses 41 is formed in the lower surface 37B in a sawtooth configuration. The serrated saw bar 37 is heated and when compressed on the material 19, the teeth or raised portions 39 cut through the material 19 while sealing the sides 22, 24 of the cut. The recesses 41, however, make up contact with the material 19 leaving this portion of the material 19 not cut. The resultant seal and tear line 36 consists of sealed cuts and alternating uncut portions so that adjacent bags, sleeves or sacks 10 can tear apart along the seal and tear line 36. Sealing and tearing lines 36 they need less material than wide seals or double seals with perforation lines in the prior art, and when making several million bags, sleeves or sacks, there are considerable savings in material using the sealing bar 37 of the present invention.
Figure 2 shows a method for making bags, sleeves or bags 10. The method shown shows bags, sleeves or bags with a flap, but bags, sleeves or bags without a flap can be manufactured using this method not extending a side wall. In this method a piece of material 19 is shown, but two pieces of material 19 can be used and joined together. As the material 19 advances, a release sheet 34 with adhesive 32 applied thereon is placed on the material 19. The release sheet 34 is fed from a roll 38. As the release sheet 34 is fed from the roller 38 the adhesive 32 is applied to the release sheet 34 by an applicator 40. The release sheet 34 with adhesive 32 applied thereto is feed between a pair of rollers 42 and 44. The material 19 is also fed between the rollers 42 and 44. The rollers 42 and 44 compress the release sheet 34 on a part of the material 19 which will be the flap 30.
The material 19 with the release sheet 34 advances towards a folding unit 46. The folding unit 46 has a pleat 48. The folding unit 46 bends the material 19 to the position of the first side wall 16 on the second side wall 18 and form the flap 30.
The folded material 19 advances between the sawtooth sealing bar 37 and a rubber sealing roller 52. The folded material 19 stops intermittently and the sealing rod 37 performs a reciprocating movement towards the clutch with the material 19 and the roller rubber sealant 52 for sealing and cutting a sealing and tearing line 36. The sealing rod 37 is then removed from the clutch with the material 19 and the material 19 advances at a distance equal to the width of a bag, sleeve or bag 10. The sealing bar 37 again performs the reciprocating or reciprocating movement to repeat the operation of forming a sealing and tearing line 36. The material 19 with the formed sealing and tearing lines 36 is then wound onto the roll 12.
Although the present invention has been described with reference to one or more specific embodiments, those skilled in the art will realize that it is possible to make multiple changes to the present without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. Each one of these modalities and the evident variations thereof is contemplated within the spirit and scope of the claimed claim, which is established in the following claims.
