Abstract
The present invention relates to a filter made from coconut-based activated carbon to purify polluted air currents. It comprises a base of activated carbon from carbonized coconut shell as filter media, added with pulverized Jamaican flower and moringa seeds as purifying media, obtained through a thermal process involving the coconut shell's prior carbonization and a subsequent chemical process. Herein, it incorporates the mixture's components into a solution of water with salt and acid to increase its pore size to facilitate the adsorption of contaminants on its surface area. The adsorption capacity of the air filter elaborated with the proposed methodology increases from a range of 20-50%, generally observed in commercial filters, to 70-90% of its weight.
