Abstract
The present invention relates to a system of compositions and methods for obtaining, stabilizing, and applying an ex-vivo model of the gastrointestinal microbiota, useful in the simulation of digestion processes. Herein, the incorporation of the stabilized microbiota allows conducting a range of studies on populations of microorganisms from donors belonging to an interest group for any characteristics or conditions related to age, gender, genotype/phenotype, ethnicity, race, or geographic location. Also, relating to some specific alteration of the state of health caused by pathogens, nutritional aspects, obesity, kidney failure, metabolic disorders, among others. Further, the stabilized microbiota comes from a particular individual for use in simulations of digestive processes, to test therapies related to the formation of metabolites and the impact that they can have on the intestinal microbiota, for example in cases of inflammatory bowel disease.
