Abstract

La invención se relaciona con un procedimiento que comprende los pasos de - proporcionar una fracción rica en glicerol tal como fuente de carbono a un medio de fermentación; - fermentar el medio de fermentación por medio de un microorganismo capaz de producir ácido propiónico en presencia de una sal cáustica para proporcionar un caldo de fermentación que comprende una sal de ácido propiónico, y - recuperar la sal del ácido propiónico del caldo de fermentación, en donde la fracción rica en glicerol se deriva de un procedimiento que comprende los pasos de - someter la fracción de glicerol a un paso de cristalización evaporativa para formar una fracción de destilado que comprende agua, y una fracción de residuo que comprende glicerol y sales sólidas, - someter la fracción de residuo a un paso de remoción de sal, dando como resultado una fracción de sal y una fracción rica en glicerol; también se reclama un procedimiento en donde el glicerol se purifica y posteriormente se fermenta; se ha encontrado que el procedimiento de acuerdo con la invención permite la fabricación de una sal de ácido propiónico por fermentación utilizando una fuente de carbono rica en glicerol sin los problemas en procesamiento corriente abajo, y sin la necesidad de pasos de purificación altos en costo para el glicerol.
