Abstract
The process refers to the recovery of iron oxides, with side production of merchant grade phosphoric acid, using as raw materials: residual sludges resulting from the production processes of high-purity iron oxides, sulfuric acid and calcium oxide. The first step of the process consists in an acid lixiviation of the residues for removing calcium carbonate and tri calcium phosphate, once said impurities have been removed, it is possible to recover, by reverse flotation, iron oxides and separate silica and further sodium and potassium compounds which are also contained in the sludges. The lixiviates that contain mono calcium phosphate are useful for producing merchant phosphoric acid, when this latter element is precipitated with a lime slurry and fed to a traditional plant of phosphoric acid operated by sulfuric acid.
