Abstract

Se describen en la presente métodos, compuestos y composiciones para prevenir o tratar un trastorno pancreático, incluyendo diabetes mellitus (por ejemplo diabetes tipo 1 y/o tipo 2). La invención generalmente incluye administrar a un sujeto, ácido 1,3-propandisulfónico o una sal farmacéuticamente aceptable del mismo, por ejemplo, sal de sodio del ácido 1,3-propandisulfónico. La invención también se refiere a métodos, compuestos y composiciones para mejorar o al menos estabilizar las funciones pancreáticas y para la prevención y/o tratamiento del síndrome metabólico y sus componentes. La invención además se refiere a métodos, compuestos y composiciones para la prevención y/o tratamiento de dislipidemia, y más particularmente para reducir los niveles de lípido en el suero perjudiciales, especialmente colesterol y triglicéridos en pacientes que necesitan del mismo, incluyendo pacientes diabéticos.
