Description
The present invention relates to a clutch drive of an engine cooling fan of a motor vehicle.
Modern medium and heavy trucks are equipped with engine cooling fans that waste a substantial part of the power generated by the engine, although their cooling effect is relatively rarely needed during normal operation of the vehicle. Therefore, it is customary for these types of engines to have a clutch drive that controls the connection and disconnection of the engine cooling fan in response to changes in coolant temperature. One problem with prior art cooling fan clutches is that their various components are most likely to wear out relatively quickly due to the impact load that occurs during connection and disconnection of the clutch drive. Accordingly, U.S. Patent No. 4,515,258 discloses a clutch drive mechanism of a vehicle engine cooling fan, wherein the torque required to drive the fan is driven in a state of being connected to a rotating fan plate equipped with an engine cooling fan. The pressure plate is delivered to the fan through coil springs that pressurize the plate. Since the torque in this prior art clutch drive is transmitted through the coil spring, the impact load is substantially reduced, thereby increasing the life of various components of the fan clutch.
The present invention is an improvement on the fan clutch drive device disclosed in the above-mentioned patent publication. The fan clutch drive according to the invention comprises a spring stabilizer which suppresses the deformation of the springs that transmit the torque and thereby makes the drive more efficient. The spring stabilizer also prevents noise due to vibrations and movement of the springs associated with the clutch drive, and also transmits part of the torque to the fan.
These and other advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are partial longitudinal cross-sectional views of clutch drive devices made in accordance with the study of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, a fan drive, generally indicated at 10, includes a
The pressure plate portion 28 is part of a fan drive member, generally indicated at 30. In addition to the pressure plate portion 28, the
The pressure plate portion 28 is moved away from the connecting
The circumferentially spaced and spirally wound coil springs, indicated generally at 62, are mounted in circumferentially spaced pockets 64 supported by the pressure plate portion 28. The coils of the springs 62 form a cavity 66 that axially houses the
In operation, the spring 62 pressurizes the pressure plate portion 28 in a driving connection with the
Ideally, the spring stabilizer 72 is made of plastic or some other slightly flexible material, so that it can easily bend and absorb relative movement between the various components.
When the clutch is shut off, the aforementioned temperature response valve (not shown) communicates air pressure into the chamber 60, thereby forcing the
