Proper care for the plants you grow requires plenty of watering while avoiding overspending. Watering is not only necessary for plants growing indoors, but also for replenishing rainwater for plants growing outdoors. But if the plant receives too much water, the roots will rot and even the plant will die.
Too much water at once can be easily prevented by installing drainage holes, for example in indoor plants. These drainage holes allow excess water, that is, water that is not absorbed by the soil, to seep out of the soil in which the root grows. Pots with drainage holes like this usually have a container outside to collect water that has leaked out. Alternatively, drainage can be formed by creating a layer of gravel on the bottom of the pot and covering it with soil.
Plants with suitable drainage channels as described above, or plants grown on the ground, may not receive too much water at one time, but carry the risk of receiving water too often. Therefore, plant growers are advised to give pollen again when the soil is well dried. This is the old-fashioned rule for most cultivated plants. The exception is that succulent plants should be kept fairly dry for a considerable period of time, and ferns should always be kept in damp soil. Most plants, however, grow best when they are well watered a short time after the soil has dried.
Appropriate time intervals for watering depend on a number of factors in the soil's wet and dry cycles. The wet and dry cycles of soil depend on the characteristics of the individual plants, and the amount of water the plant's roots take depends not only on the age of the plant, but also on the season of the year. Most plants have reduced water requirements in winter. Another factor is the composition of the soil around the roots. Different types of soil have different amounts of water they carry. Environmental conditions, such as atmospheric temperature and humidity, can also alter the apprentice cycle by affecting the rate of evaporation of water from the soil.
Determining the appropriate time to water a particular plant requires observation of the plant itself and testing of the moisture content of the soil. The leaves of a plant usually sag when the plant needs water. However, excessive watering of plants can also cause sagging leaves. Therefore, determining the proper time for watering by observing the plant itself is not particularly suitable for people without much experience in plant cultivation.
By looking at the surface of the soil and determining the water required for the plant, no reliable results can be obtained. Because evaporation takes place on the surface of the soil, the top layer of soil dries faster than the bottom layer. Therefore, testing the soil below the surface is the best way to determine the humidity of the soil. If you do this test by hand, you will have to cut through the soil several times and spend too much time doing this method on many plants.
There are several known devices that can be used to visually determine the moisture content of soils below the surface. For example, there are instruments that determine the moisture content of the soil by measuring variables such as osmotic pressure. These instruments, although sensitive and durable, are too expensive and not practical for occasional use in homes and gardens.
Also known are devices in which a hydrophilic material is wrapped in a plastic layer and a hole is made in the plastic layer so that the moisture of the soil contacts a small portion of the hydrophilic material. If the device is partially placed in the soil around the plant, the water content of the hydrophilic material is proportional to the water content of the soil. Hydrophilic substances or parts thereof are chemically treated to change color as the water content changes. By visually observing the color of this substance, the moisture content of the soil is known.
However, in such a device, a part of the hydrophilic material is directly exposed to the organisms in the soil, so that the device is deteriorated by the organism. It has also been found that these devices respond slowly to changes in humidity.
The humidity indicator of the present invention is particularly suitable for determining the wet and dry cycle for potted indoor and outdoor plants and garden plants. The humidity indicator of the present invention not only has low manufacturing cost, but also prevents the instrument from deteriorating by directly contacting the humidity indicator with soil. The humidity indicator of the present invention is also simple to install and easily visible by eye. The humidity indicator of the present invention is reliable for a considerable period of time and accurately reflects the moisture time of the plant.
The absorbent material used in the present invention is chemically treated so that the color can be sufficiently changed as the moisture content changes. Such absorbent material has a form in which a composition containing, for example, cobalt chloride, is permeated into a plate support that absorbs water. Cobalt chloride turns pink in high humidity and blue in low humidity. The use of cobalt compounds as humidity indicators is well known in the art. By controlling the amount of cobalt compound and the addition of other compounds contained in the absorbent material, it can be made sensitive to the amount of water causing the color change as well as the time at which the color change occurs. Therefore, the characteristic composition of the display material used in the present invention also constitutes one feature of the present invention.
In the present invention, it is important that the indicator material does not turn pink until the soil is well watered, indicating the wet boundary of the wet and dry cycle. Therefore, the preferred embodiment of the present invention includes a component for increasing the humidity level of the color change of the display material.
The main object of the present invention is to provide an accurate soil humidity indicator that is not only simple and practical to use, but also not bad by organisms in the soil, and is inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In FIG. 1, the
As shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, the
The
In summary, the present invention is as follows. In other words, the two rooms are connected to each other by a passage, which is covered with an absorbent plate containing a display composition. The
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is a
The
A significant portion of the length of the
The
Humidity indicators in the upper room have vents to the atmosphere, in the lower room there are holes in the soil, and the display material connects these two rooms to each other is a more preferred embodiment of the present invention.
As described above, the composition of the display material penetrating the
The
The color change of cobalt chloride is represented by the following balanced equation.
Cobalt chloride turns blue when exposed to a relative humidity of up to about 55% and turns pink when exposed to more than 55%. The time required for the display to change color after exposure to the relative humidity, which can change color, depends, among other things, on humidity. That is, the time when the display composition containing cobalt chloride turns from blue to pink is faster when the relative humidity of 90% is exposed than the relative humidity of 70%. Of course, all of the ferns eventually turn pink.
The
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the
As well shown in FIG. 2, the fixing
As best shown in FIG. 3, the
3 also shows the preferred location of the humidity indicator in the ground. That is, the
The humidity indicator of FIG. 4 is generally the same as that of FIGS. 1-3, except that there is no
The display composition used for this invention contains cobalt chloride. However, it is more preferable to use cobalt chloride with a component that causes color change at a relative humidity of about 80% to 90%. Thiocyanates such as, for example, potassium thiocyanate are used together with cobalt chloride. It is also conceivable to increase the chromaticity by adding other salts such as sodium chloride or calcium chloride to include other cations and anions.
Various methods of saturating a solution containing the above-mentioned compounds in an absorbent material and then removing the solvent are known and the present invention is not limited to any particular method.
Preferred composition of the present invention is that the weight ratio of cobalt chloride and potassium thiocyanate is 1: 0.5 to 1: 0.8. More preferred weight ratio is from 1: 0.6 to 1: 0.7. Of course, instead of potassium thiocyanate, equivalents of other thiocyanate salts, such as sodium or calcium salts, may be used.
The method of soaking the display composition in the blotter paper can be seen in the following examples.
Dilute 28 g of cobalt chloride, 15 g of sodium chloride, 4 g of calcium chloride (anhydrous), and 19 g of potassium thiocyanate to make a solution with a total volume of 380 ml, and immerse the blotter paper in this solution to prepare the display material. When immersing the blotter paper, the solution covers both sides of the blotter paper. Hang the blotter paper to air dry.
Although the exact working principle of the present invention is not fully understood, it is believed that the moisture content of the air in the lower chamber varies with the moisture content of the soil. When the display composition is exposed to both upper and lower air, the
