Poly(phenylene ether) is a type of plastic known for its excellent water resistance, dimensional stability, and inherent flame retardancy. By blending poly(phenylene ether) with a variety of other plastics, properties such as strength, stiffness, chemical resistance, and heat resistance can be tailored to include, for example, components in commercial appliances, household appliances, solar systems, and automotive systems. It can meet the requirements of a wide variety of consumer and industrial products. However, particularly for product applications exposed to high voltages, there remains a need for poly(phenylene ether) based compositions that exhibit improved high voltage tracking resistance, i.e. improved resistance to degradation after repeated exposure to high voltages.

These and other embodiments are described in detail below.
The present inventors have determined that improved high-voltage tracking resistance is achieved by compositions comprising certain amounts of poly(phenylene ether), an organophosphate ester flame retardant, and a surface energy reducer, which compositions contain up to 30% by weight of mineral filler. Contains.
따라서, 일 구현예는 사전 블렌딩된 조성물의 총 중량을 기준으로 하기를 포함하는 사전 블렌딩된 조성물의 용융-블렌딩 생성물을 포함하는 용융-블렌딩된 조성물이다: 폴리(페닐렌 에테르) 43 내지 87 중량%; 유기포스페이트 에스테르 난연제 10 내지 20 중량%; 폴리트리플루오로에틸렌, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리헥사플루오로프로필렌, 테트라플루오로에틸렌-헥사플루오로프로필렌 코폴리머, 폴리(비닐 플루오라이드), 폴리(비닐리덴 플루오라이드), 폴리클로로트리플루오로에틸렌, 폴리디메틸실록산, 실리콘 오일, 파라핀 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어지는 군으로부터 선택된 표면 에너지 감소제 6 내지 22 중량%; 및 미네랄 충전제 0 내지 30 중량%.Accordingly, one embodiment is a melt-blended composition comprising the melt-blended product of a pre-blended composition comprising, based on the total weight of the pre-blended composition: 43 to 87 weight percent poly(phenylene ether) ; 10 to 20% by weight of organic phosphate ester flame retardant; Polytrifluoroethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyhexafluoropropylene, tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, poly(vinyl fluoride), poly(vinylidene fluoride), polychlorotrifluoro 6 to 22% by weight of a surface energy reducer selected from the group consisting of ethylene, polydimethylsiloxane, silicone oil, paraffin, and combinations thereof; and 0 to 30% by weight of mineral filler.
Melt-blended compositions are described as comprising the melt-blended product of a pre-blended composition comprising various ingredients. This technique is used because the chemical and/or physical properties of the components in the pre-blended composition may change upon melt blending. For example, the molecular weight distribution of poly(phenylene ether) can change during melt blending. As another example, when the surface energy reducing agent is provided in particle form, the shape and size of the particles may change upon melt blending.
The pre-blended composition includes poly(phenylene ether). Poly(phenylene ether) is a polymer containing repeating structural units with the formula:

As used herein, the term “hydrocarbyl”, whether used by itself or as a prefix, suffix or fragment of another term, refers to a moiety containing only carbon and hydrogen. The moieties may be aliphatic or aromatic, straight chain, cyclic, acyclic, branched, saturated or unsaturated. It may also contain combinations of aliphatic, aromatic, straight chain, cyclic, acyclic, branched, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon moieties. However, when a hydrocarbyl moiety is described as substituted, it may optionally contain heteroatoms in addition to the carbon and hydrogen members of the substituent moiety. Accordingly, when specifically described as substituted, the hydrocarbyl moiety may also contain one or more carbonyl groups, amino groups, hydroxyl groups, etc., or it may contain heteroatoms within the backbone of the hydrocarbyl moiety. . As an example, Z 1 may be a di-n-butylaminomethyl group formed by reaction of a terminal 3,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenyl group with the di-n-butylamine component of the oxidative polymerization catalyst.

Additionally, tetramethyldiphenoquinone (TMDQ) end groups are also frequently present, typically obtained from 2,6-dimethylphenol-containing reaction mixtures in which tetramethyldiphenoquinone by-products are present. The poly(phenylene ether) may be in the form of a homopolymer, copolymer, graft copolymer, ionomer or block copolymer, as well as combinations thereof. In some embodiments, poly(phenylene ether) includes poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether).

As used herein, the term “poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer” refers to a block copolymer comprising at least one poly(phenylene ether) block and at least one polysiloxane block.
In some embodiments, the poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer is prepared by an oxidative copolymerization method. In this method, poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer is the product of a process comprising oxidative copolymerization of a monomer mixture comprising a monohydric phenol and a hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane. In some embodiments, the monomer mixture comprises 70 to 99 parts by weight of monohydric phenol and 1 to 30 parts by weight of hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane, based on the total weight of monohydric phenol and hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane. The hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane may comprise a plurality of repeating units having the structure:
상기 식에서, R8의 각각의 경우는 독립적으로 수소, C1-C12 히드로카빌 또는 C1-C12 할로히드로카빌이고; 2개의 말단 단위는 하기 구조를 갖는다:wherein each occurrence of R 8 is independently hydrogen, C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbyl, or C 1 -C 12 halohydrocarbyl; The two terminal units have the following structure:
매우 특정한 구현예에서, R8 및 R9의 각각의 경우는 메틸이고, Y는 메톡실이다.where Y is hydrogen, C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbyl, C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbyloxy or halogen, and each occurrence of R 9 is independently hydrogen, C 1 -C 12 hydrocarbyl or C 1 -C 12 It is a halohydrocarbyl. In a very specific embodiment, each instance of R 8 and R 9 is methyl and Y is methoxyl.
In some embodiments, the monohydric phenol includes 2,6-dimethylphenol, and a hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane having the structure:
In the above formula, n is on average 5 to 100, specifically 30 to 60.
The oxidative copolymerization process produces poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer as the desired product and poly(phenylene ether) (without incorporated polysiloxane blocks) as a by-product. There is no need to separate the poly(phenylene ether) from the poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer. Accordingly, poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymers can be utilized as “reaction products” that include both poly(phenylene ether) and poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymers. Certain isolation procedures, such as precipitation from isopropanol, make it possible to ensure that the reaction product is essentially free of residual hydroxyaryl-terminated polysiloxane starting material. In other words, this isolation procedure ensures that the polysiloxane content of the reaction product is essentially all in the form of poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymer. Detailed methods for forming poly(phenylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymers are described in U.S. Patent No. 8,017,697 to Carrillo et al. and U.S. Patent Application Publication No. US 2012/0329961 A1 to Carrillo et al.

For each composition, five tensile bars with dimensions according to type 1B bars of ISO 527-1:2019 were molded and conditioned at 23° C. and 50% relative humidity for 40 hours. For each test cycle, a 1% aqueous ammonium chloride solution was sprayed onto the surface of the tensile rod and then a 12 kilovolt voltage was applied on the rod for 10 seconds with an electrode spacing of 40 mm. The sample surface was then visually inspected to determine whether any tracking marks were present. If tracking marks were not observed, additional cycles were performed until tracking marks were observed, with the ammonium chloride solution reapplied between each cycle. Table 2 values represent the average of values from 5 samples per composition. Higher values indicate greater high voltage tracking resistance.

V-0의 등급을 달성하기 위해, 각각의 개별 시편에 대한 잔염 시간 t1 및 t2는 10초 이하여야 했고; 5개 시편 모두에 대한 총 잔염 시간 (5개 시편 모두에 대한 t1 + t2)은 50초 이하여야 했고; 각각의 개별 시편에 대한 제2 잔염 시간 + 잔광 시간 (t2 + t3)은 30초 이하여야 했고; 고정 클램프(holding clamp)까지 화염이 일어나거나 또는 작열하는 시편은 없었고; 면(cotton) 지시체는 화염 입자 또는 방울(drops)에 의해 점화될 수 없었다.“UL94 V-0 Thickness (mm)” is a measure of flame retardancy, with lower thickness values being more desirable. Specifically, "UL94 V-0 Thickness (mm)" refers to the value of V-0 in the 20 mm Vertical Burning Flame Test of Underwriter's Laboratory Bulletin 94 "Test for Flammability of Plastic Materials, UL 94". This is the sample thickness (mm) that can be created. Before testing, flame rods with a thickness of 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 mm were conditioned at 23° C. and 50% relative humidity for at least 48 hours. Five sets of flame rods were tested for each composition. For each rod, the rod was flamed and then removed, and the time required for the rod to self-extinguish (first afterflame time, t1) was recorded. The flame was then reapplied, removed, and the time required for the rod to self-extinguish (second afterflame time, t2) and the glowing time after flame (afterglow time, t3) were recorded. To achieve a rating of V-0, the afterflame time t1 and t2 for each individual specimen had to be less than 10 seconds; The total afterflame time for all five specimens (t1 + t2 for all five specimens) had to be less than 50 seconds; The second afterglow time + afterglow time (t2 + t3) for each individual specimen had to be less than 30 seconds; There were no specimens that flamed or burned to the holding clamp; The cotton indicator could not be ignited by flame particles or drops.
