염소산나트륨은, 염소산소다라고도 한며, 300 ℃ 이상 가열하면 산소를 발생하고 분해한다. 약간 흡습성이 있으며, 물 ·알코올에는 녹고, 산성수용액에서는 강한 산화작용을 보인다. 광학활성(광회전성)을 나타내는 등축정계이나, 사면체결정도 알려져 있다. 제조법은 염소산칼륨의 경우와 비슷하여, 염화나트륨용액을 양극(兩極) 사이에 격막을 두지 않고 전기분해하면 생긴다. 또, 수산화칼슘용액(석회유)에 염소가스를 불어넣어 생기는 염소산칼슘과 황산나트륨의 복분해에 의해서도 생긴다. 주로 과염소산염 제조에 사용되고, 산화제 ·성냥 ·연화(煙花) ·폭약 재료로 사용된다. 또 염색 ·가죽의 무두질 ·살충제 ·표백제 ·제초제 등으로도 사용된다.Sodium chlorate, also called sodium chlorate, generates oxygen and decomposes when heated to 300°C or higher.
