Description
The present invention claims the priority of US provisional application number 62/587,620, filed on November 17, 2017, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
The present invention relates generally to quantum dot displays. More specifically, it relates to a quantum dot display including color conversion.
MicroLEDs are small (eg, typically less than 100 μm×100 μm) light emitting components. These are inorganic semiconductor components that produce high luminance up to 50 million nits. Therefore, microLEDs are particularly suitable for high resolution displays. One option for manufacturing color displays using microLEDs is to use native red, green, and blue microLEDs for each pixel. The use of original red, green and blue microLEDs, however, has many problems. Typically, the material used for chuck and green microLEDs is GaN, but the material used for red microLEDs is InP. Red InP microLEDs are typically thicker than blue or green GaN microLEDs, which can complicate some deployment schemes. In fact, some batch systems become impossible, such as selective direct laser emission from a source wafer, because the red growth wafer is not inherently transparent. GaN and InP microLEDs also have different required voltages. In addition, it is a so-called "green gap" in which the efficiency of the original green microLED is low. Red microLEDs can also be difficult to manufacture because extremely small red microLEDs can stop working.
Display manufacturers are actively investigating the use of quantum dots as emitters in alternative or photoluminescent displays for conventional absorbing color filters. By using quantum dots, displays with higher color gamut, longer lifetime, and lower production cost can compete with organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays. A quantum dot display, however, may experience light entrapment and cross talk between pixels. Accordingly, disclosed herein are quantum dot displays that do not suffer from light traps or crosstalk and methods of manufacturing quantum dot displays that avoid problems caused by the use of microLEDs of different colors.

The red quantum dot may be embedded in a matrix, for example, to form a layer of the
Accordingly, the
In operation, blue light source 104 may be used for
Sub-(defined by the layer of the width and the
The emission of some light from the layers of the
The
In operation, blue
