Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an interface circuit, and more particularly, to a pulse width modulation-based sensor interface circuit for outputting a difference between a reference capacitance and a sensing capacitance as a half-digital signal in a pulse width modulation format.
Conventional capacitive sensor interface circuits can be largely divided into analog interface circuits and semi-digital interface circuits.
Particularly, the half-digital interface circuit is simpler than the analog interface circuit in terms of power consumption, circuit complexity, and the like. The semi-digital interface circuit uses the periodic modulation (PM) or the pulse width modulation (PWM) to measure the capacitance information of the sensor (C to P) and the pulse duty cycle (C to D).
The semi-digital interface circuit generally uses a relaxation oscillator or a ring oscillator to supply a square wave signal and a single point calibration to reduce the effects of parasitic capacitance, ) Method.
Although the design of the C to P interface circuit is simple, a circuit based on a counter, a circuit for converting from a frequency to a voltage, or a circuit based on a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) is required for frequency demodulation of a signal. In addition, the output frequency of the C to P circuit has a significant effect on the transconductance, parasitic capacitance and resistance of MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) transistors and is also affected by process and temperature variations.
The C to D interface circuit encodes the sensor capacitance change in the time domain to modulate the sensor's information with a duty cycle or pulse width. There is also a way to directly connect the sensor directly to the micro-controller. This architecture eliminates the need for signal conditioning circuits, but it does not require high input capacitance, output resistance, and discharge time measurements on the microcontroller's port pins to be affected by trigger noise, quantization, There is a problem that resolution is reduced.
