Description
The present invention relates to an electrode configuration of a large current duoplatomatron ion source for a BNCT accelerator and an apparatus therefor.
The contents described in this section merely provide background information on the present embodiment and do not constitute the prior art.
Duo Plasma- tron Ion Source is a structure that generates plasma through arc discharge. It was first proposed by Manfred von Ardenne in 1956. In order to generate high-density plasma, By constructing the discharge path through the hole of the narrow intermediate electrode with the electrode, the plasma is spatially limited to obtain the high density plasma. In addition, an axial magnetic field of 4,000 Gauss is applied around the plasma generation space between the intermediate electrode and the anode to bind the plasma charge carriers to the magnetic field, so that the plasma is restrained and compressed, so that the plasma having a diameter of 1-2 mm A high-density plasma in the form of a column can be obtained. This high-density plasma diffuses and spreads spatially through a pin hole located in the center of the anode to the subsequent plasma expansion cup, thereby appropriately lowering the plasma density to be suitable for beam extraction. Thereafter, a positive high voltage is applied to draw a positive ion beam out of the plasma.
Conventional duo plasma atom, which is based on this basic principle, is suitable for withdrawing a medium current and a continuous ion beam of several mA, but it is difficult to withdraw a large current beam due to limitation of high density plasma inflow and maintenance in the expansion cup when withdrawing a high current ion beam of 50 mA or more . In addition, since the surface shape of the plasma at the drawing end is not uniform, the emittance for determining the quality of the beam is increased, and the beam is unstable.
Although tungsten, tungsten-thorium, and LaB 6 are used as the cathode for thermal electron emission, sputtering of the material due to the collision of the cathode of the plasma ions at the time of discharge shortens the life span, There is a disadvantage that a filament heating power is considerably consumed in order to maintain a high temperature for releasing. In addition, due to a large amount of space charge due to the plasma diffusion in the beam extraction system during withdrawing of a large current beam, especially in a pulsed beam drawing, discharge through the insulator occurs and even at a low beam extraction voltage of 20 to 30 kV This causes the beam to become unstable.
The requirements of the ion source of the proton accelerator for generating neutrons in the BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) are as follows: the hydrogen ion beam current is 50 mA or more, the beam emittance is 0.3 π · mm · mrad or less, the beam stability is 1% A life of 40 hours or more and a continuous operation time of 10 hours or more is required, and it is necessary to improve and improve the conventional duo plasma atom ion source to meet this condition.

The
In an embodiment of the present invention, a cathode-
Table 1 shows the thermoelectron emission characteristics and work function of various cathode materials. Referring to Table 1, characteristics of tungsten, rhenium, LaB6, and BaO / SrO oxide cathode, which are typical cathode materials used in the case of an ion source using arc discharge, can be confirmed. However, a filament type cathode such as a tungsten wire or a rhenium wire is sputtered due to a collision of a cathode of a plasma ion at the time of discharge, and it is cut off when it is used for about a couple of hours due to the effect of removing the filament atoms and the effect of curing the material.

In an embodiment of the present invention, a mesh
Referring to FIG. 3, the oxide has a smaller work function, which represents the minimum energy required to remove free electrons from the metal, compared to tungsten, has an emission current density that is large and can maintain an operating temperature of about 1000 K, The life can be increased.
Further, in case of the tungsten filament, it is necessary to continuously supply a voltage to the filament since it is necessary to maintain a high temperature of about 2800 K in order to emit sufficient heat electrons. However, the

The
When the
If the alignment between the central axis of the
Therefore, in order to obtain a high-density plasma, a movable
In order to solve this problem, an annular insulator for joining the ion source and the
FIG. 7 shows the ratio per unit time (here, sec) in which ions and free electrons recombine to neutral atoms or molecules depending on the wall material.
The plasma delivered from the
Plasma formed in the
In one embodiment of the present invention, the inner wall of the
FIG. 8 is a conceptual diagram showing a pulling direction characteristic of a cation beam according to the shape of a plasma surface.
8 illustrates a change in the pulling direction of the cation beam according to the shape of the plasma surface at the beam outlet when the ion beam is extracted from the plasma in the
The larger the exit diameter of the
When the plasma drawing surface is convex, when ions and electrons are diffused in the beam drawing system and a high voltage for beam extraction is applied, an unintended discharge may occur, or the drawn beam may become unstable. Particularly in the case of pulse beam withdrawing, serious discharge problems can be caused.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the plasma
Also, since the electric field due to the plasma
When the plasma accommodated in the
The accelerating

The distance between the
