Description
In general, the present invention relates to heat recovery and use. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of process heat by-products from process columns to produce electrical and / or mechanical power through the use of organic Rankine cycles.
따라서, 상기 노력의 대부분은, 유기 랭킨 사이클 시스템이 종종 그 파트인 다양한 기술을 사용하는 다수의 제련소 공정에서 나온 폐열의 활용으로부터 누적되는 이점을 찾는데 관한 것이었다(가령, Carson의 미국 출원 번호 4,109,469호 참조).Efforts to obtain and / or recover waste heat at smelters are known (see, eg, US Pat. No. 2,335,727 to Badenhausen). The document stated that there is no general waste heat recovery strategy for all types of smelters and for all heat-producing processes performed within such smelters. Thus, much of this effort has been directed to finding the benefits that organic Rankine cycle systems often accumulate from the utilization of waste heat from a number of smelter processes using a variety of technologies that are part of it (see, eg, Carson, US Application No. 4,109,469). ).
In many smelters, the hydraulic capacity of the process column can be increased by installing a high capacity tray. Usually, the reboiler input can be increased because of the good heat transfer provided by the availability of additional heat medium (often steam) and the phase change on one side of the associated exchanger. However, the overhead cooling capacity in such a system can often be more problematic as it is limited by the ambient conditions and the large amount of space required by the associated air cooling cells of the system.
Waste heat has also been recovered through the use of organic Rankine cycles in the geothermal industry. The waste heat temperature from the geothermal process is closely matched with the waste heat temperature found within the process column overhead. However, a major obstacle to the further use of organic Rankine cycle technology in this type of application is that current organic Rankine cycle designs are highly dependent on stable process conditions. In addition, existing equipment used within the current design is more prone to contamination or corrosion problems that are prevalent in process column equipment. Another obstacle can be increased design complexity in integrating organic Rankine cycle systems into existing column operations.
In view of the above, any process or improvement to the recovery of such overhead heat from this above-mentioned process column may be seen as an advantage in terms of waste heat recovery / recovery as well as process efficiency.

In general, the present application is directed to direct and indirect heat recovery systems and methods for generating electrical and / or mechanical power, using organic by-products and heat byproducts in overhead streams from process columns. Exemplary systems may include overhead streams from a process column, heaters or heat exchangers, turbine-generator sets, condenser heat exchangers, and pumps. The overall efficiency of the system of the present invention is increased over conventional systems, since the overhead condenser duty, which is typically thrown into the atmosphere, is now recovered to power (with the additional cost of operating the cooling fan). In addition, by continuously operating some or all of the existing heat exchangers in series using an organic Rankine cycle condenser to increase the overall overhead cooling capacity of the column, the advantages described below can be realized. The throughput of the process column can be increased to a sufficient hydraulic capacity of the tray, and the process column overhead pressure can be reduced. With regard to this latter advantage, this pressure reduction generally increases the volatility associated with the liquid component. This may improve separation, as is typically found in smelters, so that more valuable intermediate boilinng liquid products may be obtained from the column sidestream. Alternatively, the equally dispensed liquid can be maintained at a low reflux ratio, thus saving energy in the form of reduced reboiler heat input. Similar advantages apply to petrochemical plant columns with only two liquids. The purity of the product can be improved with the same column heat input, or energy can be saved by reducing the reboiler heat input while maintaining the existing product purity.
