Abstract
Description
An oscillator and a method of operating the same.
Oscillator is a device that generates a signal of a certain period, mainly used in wireless communication systems such as mobile communication terminals, satellite and radar communication devices, wireless network devices, automotive communication devices, and also used in analog sound synthesis apparatus. All mobile devices carry information on a specific frequency band, where the component that produces that frequency band is a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO).
In recent years, as the demand for high performance and miniaturization of communication devices increases and the operating frequency band increases, development of a high output oscillator which is small and has a high quality factor and low phase noise is required.

Referring to FIG. 1, first and second
The
The
Hereinafter, the operation method and principle of the oscillator having the structure of FIG. 1 will be described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.
Referring to FIG. 2, an oscillator having the structure of FIG. 1 is provided. Here, the first and second
Referring to FIG. 3, in the initial stage (hereinafter, referred to as a first stage) S1, the first and second
When the first and second
3 shows an example of how the magnetization directions of the first and second
FIG. 4 illustrates a change in the magnetization amount Mz of the vertical components of each of the first and second
Referring to FIG. 4, the magnetization amount Mz of the first
FIG. 5 shows a change in resistance of the oscillator over time, that is, a change in resistance between the first and
Referring to FIG. 5, it can be seen that the resistance of the oscillator is repeatedly changed at regular intervals. Therefore, a signal of a specific frequency band can be oscillated. At this time, since the resistance change amount ΔR is about 700 mA, when a current of 1MA / cm 2 is used, the output power may be as high as about 2 μW.
Conventional oscillators typically use one free layer and the corresponding fixed layer. In this case, since the output power is as low as ˜1 nW, it is difficult to be usefully applied to various fields. In particular, in the case where the fixed layer and the free layer have horizontal magnetic anisotropy, a magnetic field must be applied together with a current (alternating current) for the operation of the oscillator, so that the configuration becomes complicated and the control of the operation is not easy. In addition, additional layers of material, such as an anti-ferromagnetic layer, are required to fix the magnetization direction of the pinned layer, thereby making the structure of the oscillator complex and large in size.
However, according to an embodiment of the present invention, an oscillator exhibiting high output power may be implemented using a plurality of free layers. Since such an oscillator does not use a fixed bed, its configuration can be simple. In addition, the operation may be possible by a simple method of applying a DC current.
In FIG. 1, the oscillator has two
Referring to FIG. 6, three free layers (hereinafter, first to third free layers) 10, 20, and 30 may be sequentially provided between the first and
Referring to FIG. 7, four free layers (hereinafter, first to fourth free layers) 10, 20, 30, and 40 may be provided between the first and
Although not shown, an oscillator having five or more free layers is also possible. That is, a separate nonmagnetic layer and a separate free layer may be repeatedly stacked one or more times between the fourth
6 and 7, even when three or more free layers are used, the operating method of the oscillator may be similar to that described with reference to FIG. 8 is a sectional view showing an oscillator according to another embodiment of the present invention. The structure of FIG. 8 is modified from FIG.
Referring to FIG. 8, the
Hereinafter, the operating method of the oscillator according to the embodiment of the present invention will be briefly summarized. This operation method has been mentioned above in the description of FIGS. 2 and 3.
9 is a flowchart illustrating a method of operating an oscillator according to an embodiment of the present invention.
9, the current is applied to the oscillator according to an embodiment of the present invention (S10). For example, the current may be applied between the first and
