Abstract
본 발명의 실시예는 터미널 위치 로케이션 방법 및 시스템을 기술한다. 어레이 안테나에 의해 생성되는 인근 스폿 빔의 상대 전력이 결정된다. 예를 들면, 이동국이 현재 동작하고 있는 중앙 스폿 빔에 대한 6개의 인접 스폿 빔으로부터의 전력을 중앙 스폿 빔의 전력과의 비율로 측정할 수 있다. 측정된 정보를 이용하여, 이동국 위치는 예를 들면 스폿 빔 패턴의 지수 모델을 이용하여 결정될 수 있다.
Description
스폿 빔을 사용하는 무선 통신 시스템의 일예는 위성 통신 시스템에서 찾을 수 있다. 다른 예로서는 고정된 빔 위상 어레이를 이용하는 셀방식/PCS 시스템이다. 다수의 가입자를 서브할 경제적으로 유용한 용량을 확보하기 위해서, 통신 시스템은 가용한 스펙트럼을 지구상에서 자주 재사용할 수 있어야 한다. 이것은, 예를 들면 선택된 서비스 지역의 조사(illumination)를 다수의 소지역으로 나누는 복수의 스폿 빔 안테나를 이용함으로써 달성될 수 있다.
그러한 적용에 있어서 가장 유망한 위성 시스템은, 저지구 궤도(LEO), 중간 지구 궤도(MEO), 또는 정지 지구 궤도(GEO)에 위성을 배치하는 것들이다. 정지 궤도의 단점은 40,000㎞ 거리의 궤도로부터 원하는 사이즈의 스폿 빔을 생성하는데 필요한 거대한 안테나 및 양방향 통화시 문제를 발생시키는 것으로서 신호가 궤도 거리를 통과할 때 발생하는 긴 지연을 포함한다. 반면에, 저 지구 궤도 위성의 단점은 위성이 지구에 따라 이동하므로 위성이 지구 주위를 회전함에 따라 스폿 빔이 조사하는 지역이 변한다는 것이다. 중간 지구 궤도 위성은, 나타나는 정도만 적을 뿐 LEO 및 GEO에서의 문제가 모두 발생한다.
저궤도 또는 중간 지구 궤도 위성을 사용하는 위성 시스템은 지구에 대한 위성의 이동으로 인해 발생하는 위성과 지구상의 터미널간 링크상에서 급변하는 전파 지연을 보상할 필요가 있다. 그러한 시스템에서의 통신시, 신호에 도플러 보상이 제공되어 전파 지연의 변화를 상쇄한다. 도플러 보상을 제공하기 위해, 터미널은 도플러 주파수를 탐색할 수 있는데, 이것은 시스템으로의 접속을 지연시키는 소모적이고 시간을 낭비하는 프로세스이다. 그러나, 다른 방법으로서 위성 위치 추산표(ephemerides) 정보 뿐만 아니라 터미널의 로케이션을 알고 있다면, 도플러 주파수를 탐색하지 않고 도플러 보상이 계산될 수 있으므로 호출 발신(call origination)의 프로세스 속도를 높일 수 있다.
터미널 유닛의 위치를 안다는 것은 많은 다른 시스템 기능을 제공하는데도 유용하다. 예를 들면, 스폿 빔과 채널 할당간 터미널 유닛의 핸드오버(handover)는 터미널의 위치를 앎으로써 용이하게 수행될 수 있다. 다른 예로서는 비상시에 터미널을 로케이팅하는 능력이 중요한 공공 안전 시스템 및 911 서비스이다. 게다가, 미국 특허 출원 번호 08/179,953에 기재되어 있는 것과 같이, 터미널 위치는 빔형성 매트릭스를 계산하는데도 또한 유용하다.
터미널의 로케이션을 결정하는 종래 방법은 전지구 측위(測位) 시스템(GPS)로부터 얻어진 정보를 이용하는 것이다. 본 발명은 무선 통신 시스템에서 터미널을 로케이팅하는(locating) 시스템에 관한 것으로, 특히 통신 도달 범위(coverage)가 제공되는 지리적 지역을 조사하는데 스폿(spot) 빔이 이용되는 무선 통신 시스템의 터미널 로케이션에 관한 것이다.

본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 터미널 로케이션은 위상 어레이 안테나를 가지고 있는 복수의 기지국 각각에 대해 터미널에 가장 인접한 복수의 스폿 빔으로부터 수신된 신호의 상대 신호 세기값을 측정함으로써 달성된다. 예를 들면, 위상 어레이 안테나를 가지고 있는 각 기지국에 있어서, 이동국이 현재 동작중인 중앙 스폿 빔에 대한 6개의 인접 스폿 빔으로부터의 신호 세기가, 중앙 스폿 빔의 세기에 비례하여 측정될 수 있다. 이들 측정된 정보를 이용하고 스폿 빔 패턴의 지수(exponential) 모델을 이용하면 터미널의 방위(bearing)를 결정할 수 있다. 복수의 기지국으로부터의 방위를 이용하고, 삼각 측량법을 이용하면, 터미널의 위치를 결정할 수 있다.
다른 실시예에 따르면, 이동국 또는 터미널은 위성으로부터 전파되는 신호의 시간 지연을 측정할 수 있고, 수개의 그러한 측정값을 이용하여 터미널의 위치를 결정할 수 있다. 이러한 과정은, 예를 들면 이동국이 페이징 메시지를 탐색할 때 호출 세트 업 기간 또는 웨이크 업(wake up) 기간동안 수행될 수 있다.

터미널 위치 결정에 대한 설명을 위해 3개의 통신 채널이 가용한 위성 통신 시스템을 매우 단순화한 경우를 생각해 보자. 위성 안테나 시스템의 고정된 물리적 특성에 의해 결정되는 것으로서 복수, 예를 들면 37개의 안테나 빔이 제공될 수 있고, 이른바 스폿 빔 도달 범위내의 지상을 조사하는데 이용될 수 있다. 이들 37개의 스폿 빔의 일부가 도 1에 도시된다. 종래 지식에 따르면, 최악의 지점, 즉 3개의 스폿의 중간에 위치한 지점(도 1에서 빔 조사 교차(crossover)에 대응하도록 표시된 것들)에서의 이득은 피크 지점, 즉 빔 중앙 이득에 대한 중간 지점에서의 이득이 약 3㏈ 정도 낮도록 빔 폭을 선택함으로써 최대가 된다. 이것은, 한편으로는 에지 손실을 줄이기 위해 빔을 넓게 함으로써 피크 이득을 감소시키는 것과 다른 한편으로 빔을 좁게 하여 피크 이득을 증가시켜 중심으로부터 이전과 동일하게 이격된 거리에서 더 큰 빔 에지 손실을 발생시키는 것과의 사이에서 절충되어 구현될 수 있는 예이다. 다른 방법은 상기 언급한 미국 특허 출원 번호 08/179,583에 공개되어 있는 것으로서, 이는 지구상의 각 지점이 한 채널의 빔 중심 근처가 되도록 채널을 약간 다른 방향으로 유익하게 방사할 수 있는 방법을 기재하고 있다. 이러한 방식으로, 시스템은 임의의 특정 이동국을 향하여 중심에 더 가까운 것을 선택하는 다수의 채널을 구비할 수 있으므로, 그렇지 않으면 발생하게 될 빔 에지 손실을 피할 수 있다.
어느 경우나, 시스템이 37개 스폿 빔의 각각에 3개의 주파수 채널 모두를 사용할 수 있음으로써, 3개의 빔간 중간 지점의 이동국은 모두 3개의 빔으로부터 각 주파수상에서 동일한 중첩 신호, 즉 각 원하는 신호의 최상 지점상에서 2개의 동일 세기의 간섭을 수신할 것이고, 또는 이러한 간섭 문제는 빔간 주파수를 3 셀 주파수 재사용 패턴으로 분산함으로써 회피할 수 있게 된다. 후자의 경우에서, 3개의 빔간 중간 지점의 이동국은 3개의 다른 주위 빔으로부터 동일 세기의 주파수 3개 모두를 수신하지만, 더 떨어진 빔의 사이드로브(sidelobe)로부터 다소 감소된 간섭을 가지는 상태로, 각 빔으로부터 단지 하나의 주파수만을 수신할 것이다. 2개의 빔 중간에 있는 이동국은 2개의 주파수상에서는 동일 신호 세기를, 제3 주파수상에서는 2개의 동일 신호로부터 다소 감소된 신호 세기를 수신할 것이다. 빔 중앙의 이동국은 원리적으로 6개의 인접 빔으로부터 그 빔의 주파수를 수신하는데, 그 이외의 주파수 2개 상에서는 다소 감소된 신호 세기를 수신할 것이다. 그러므로, 상기 언급한 미국 특허 출원 번호 08/179,958에 기재된 것과 같이, 이동국이, 예를 들면 3개의 주파수상에서의 상대적 수신 신호 세기를 기초로하여 그 위치를 대강 결정하는 것이 가능하다. 이하에 미국 특허 출원 번호 08/597,073에 더 상세히 기재된 것으로 인근 빔으로부터 수신된 신호 세기를 기초로하여 로케이션을 결정하는 다른 하나의 방법을 간략하게 설명한다.
이동국이 각 빔으로부터 수신하는 전력은 빔 형태의 크기에 달려있고, 결과적인 빔 방사 패턴은 개개의 소자(element) 방사 패턴과 그 소자의 빔 형성으로 인한 어레이 인자(factor)의 조합으로부터 결정된다. 결과적이 패턴 전력 손실을 결정하는데 이용될 수 있는 하나의 모델은 지수(exponential) 모델이다. 하나의 빔과 다음 빔과의 구별이 확실하면, 점유 및 주위 빔으로부터 측정된 수신된 신호 세기는 빔 형태의 측정값으로서 이용될 수 있고, 이것은 이동국 위치를 결정하는데 이용될 수 있다.
빔의 중앙의 위치를 안다고 가정한 경우, 이동국 위치를 추정하는 문제는 빔 중앙에 대한 사용자 위치를 추정하는 문제가 된다. 특정 스폿 빔의 지정 방향이 알려지면, 사용자 위치는 2개의 각 크기, 즉 빔 중앙각으로부터 이격각 ø, 및 빔의 중앙 방향으로 위성으로부터 확장된 광(ray)에 관한 각 θ에 의해 구체화될 수 있다. 이러한 개념은 도 2에 도시된다.
정규화된 빔 형태가 식 1과 같이 지수 등식을 이용하여 모델화될 수 있지만, 빔 패턴은 각도 φ 및 θ의 함수이다.
여기에서, α는 모델을 실재 빔 패턴에 적용하도록 선택된다. 이 모델은 작은 값의 ø에 대해, 통상 작은(a few) 정도까지는 비교적 정확하다. 예를 들면, 인마르샛(INMARSAT) EP21 위성 설계에 대한 211 소자 어레이 제안에서, 빔 형성 후의 어레이 패턴에 근사한 것으로 발견된 α값은 0.1891이다. 지수적으로 모델된 패턴과 비교하여 이 시스템에 대한 빔 형성 패턴의 시뮬레이트된 플롯이 도 3에 도시된다. 여기에서 모델된 패턴은 더 큰(y축) 패턴 이득값을 가지는 다이버전트 (divergent) 커브로 표시된다. 지수 모델 적합성(fit)은 시뮬레이트된 패턴으로부터 벗어나는 ø= 약 3°까지는 비교적 정확하다. ø와 θ 값을 추정하기 구하기 위해, 매핑 x=f(ø,θ)가 이용되고(벡터량은 굵은선으로 표시), 아래의 수학식과 같이 주어진다.

Ry 값에 대하여, 최악의 경우 신호를 기술이 다루기로 한 노이즈 값으로 가정하고 이 신호에 대응하는 전력 측정의 적절한 노이즈 변수를 노이즈 값으로 선택함으로써 가정 노이즈 변수가 선택된다. 다른 빔으로부터의 노이즈는 독립적인 것으로 가정된다. 함수 h(x)는 이하의 수학식으로 주어진다.
위치 추정기(estimator)에 대해 이러한 방식을 이용함으로써 이동국 위치를 시간에 따라 추적할 수 있고, 또한 추정기 공분산의 추정도 생성할 수 있다. 공분산은 측정된 전력 노이즈 변수도 추정되면 유용할 수 있고, 그러한 경우에 추정기 공분산은 추정된 결과의 정확도에 관한 더 나은 정보를 제공할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 이러한 공분산은 빔 핸드오버 횟수를 더 정확히 예측하는데 이용될 수 있는 위치 추정의 의존성을 표시한다.
J(x)에 대한 최소 지점을 찾는 것은 다수의 다른 방법으로 달성될 수 있다. 함수 h(x)는 매우 비선형이므로, 확장된 칼만 필터링 접근법이 이용될 수 있다. 또한, 비선형성으로 인해, 반복 확장된 칼만 필터링 접근법이 양호하다. 이러한 추정의 등가 형태는 각 업데이트 시간 k에 대해 수학식 8로부터 직접 가우스-뉴턴 추정(Gauss-Newton estimate)을 계산하는 것이다. 시간 k에서 현재의 추정이 주어지면, 아래의 수학식을 만족하는 △x를 계산하는에 의해 개량될 수 있다.

이들 등식은 허용값이 만족할 때까지, 또는 추정에서 더이상의 개선이 발생하지 않을 때까지 반복될 수 있다. x에 대한 초기값은 이전 추정=이 되도록 선택되고, Px,k|k-1=Px,k-1이 사용된다. 시간 k=1인 경우, 이전 추정는 빔 중앙으로 선택될 수 있고, Px,1|0=Px,0는 빔 중앙의 반경이 하나의 표준 편차가 되게 선택될 수 있다. 위성의 이동이 추적되는 상황에서, 즉 위치 결정이 비교적 긴 시간에 걸쳐 계산되는 경우에,및 Px,k|k-1는 적절한 위성 이동 모델을 이용하여 생성될 수 있다. 주목할 점은 출력 결과의 컨버젼스를 모니터하기를 원하는 경우에만, 출력 공산 Px,k-1이 생성될(그럼으로써 인버젼 동작을 세이빙함) 필요가 있다는 것이다.
각 반복시, 현재 추정의 지점에서 그레디언트 ∇h=∇xh(x)가 계산된다. 이것은 수학식 14에 의해 주어진다.
여기에서 ∇xhi(x)[i=1,2,...,6]의 값은 수학식 15, 16, 및 17에 의해 주어진다.
이들 모델 등식을 이용하면, 이동국 위치는 수신된 빔의 신호 세기 및 모델된 빔 패턴의 측정과 함께, 예를 들면 수학식 8을 이용하여 결정될 수 있다.
본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 터미널 위치 로케이션은 하나 또는 그 이상의 위성으로부터 각각 송신된 신호 또는 신호들에 대한 전파 지연을 측정함으로써 선택적으로 결정될 수 있다. 이러한 실시예는 도 5의 플로우 차트에 도시된다. 예를 들면, 터미널을 가시할 수 있는 각 위성은 단계(502)에서 양호한 상관 특성의 코드를 가지는 필드를 포함한 신호를 전송할 수 있다. 신호는 또한 위성에 배치된 시계에 의해 표시되는 절대 시간을 포함한다. 단계(504)에서, 터미널에 있어서, 상관기(correlator)는 주지 코드를 로케이팅하는데 이용된다. 신호에 내포된 상관 피크의 수신 시간과 절대 시간을 기초로하여, 단계(506)에서 전파 지연이 결정될 수 있다. 단계(508)에서, 2개 또는 그 이상의 그러한 전파 지연이 네트워크에 중계될 수 있고, 주지된 위성의 위치 추산표 정보가 제공되면 터미널의 위치를 결정하는데 이용될 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 과정은 반복적으로 수행되어 터미널의 로케이션을 업데이트할 수 있다.
예를 들면, 지연 측정은 다양한 트래픽 시간에서 수행될 수 있다. 호출-세트업에서, 위성은 터미널 ID 정보를 포함하는 발신 메세지를 랜덤 액세스 채널상으로 수신할 것이다. 이것은 터미널의 로케이션에 대한 조잡한 정보, 즉 어느 어레이 소자가 터미널의 발신 메세지를 가장 강하게 수신하는지를 기초로하는 정보를 위성에 제공한다. 호출-세트업의 발생 시그널링 동안, 터미널은 상기 기술한 지연 측정을 수행할 수 있다. 예로 든 시스템에 있어서, 발신 절차는 3개 또는 4개의 지연 측정 각각이 약 20초 차이로 공간적으로 분리되어 수행될 수 있을 만큼 충분히 길다. 빔 정보와 함께 이러한 정보는 주지된 삼각 측량 기법을 이용하여 이동국의 위치를 추정하는데 이용될 수 있다.
또 하나의 실시예에 따르면, 이동 터미널의 로케이션은 터미널의 "웨이크 업"시 이들 지연 측정을 수행함으로써 수행될 수 있다. 주기적으로, 터미널은 제어 채널을 듣기 위해 전원 온된어 접속을 개시하도록 페이지되는지를 확인한다. 그리고나서,지연 정보는 터미널의 메모리 장치에 저장될 수 있다. 다수의 그러한 지연 측정값, 예를 들면 4개의 측정값이 기억될 수 있고, 그리고나서 이들 측정값은 위성에 포워딩되어 터미널의 로케이션이 호출 세트 업 또는 페이징동안 계산될 수 있다.
상기 기술한 실시예는 위성 무선 통신 시스템, 즉 무선 도달 범위가 위성으로부터 생성된 스폿 빔에 의해 제공되는 시스템의 측면에서 기술되었다. 그러나, 기지국이 다양한 지역을 조사하는 어레이 안테나를 가지고 있는 지상국 시스템도 본 발명을 구현하는데 이용될 수 있다. 그러나, 기지국이 위성의 경우와 같이 지구로부터 올려지거나 이동하지 않으므로, 단일 기지국에 의해 수신된 신호의 측정은 터미널의 절대 로케이션이라기 보다 터미널의 방위의 추정을 제공한다. 그러므로, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따르면, 복수의 기지국에 의해 터미널로부터 수신된 신호는 터미널의 위치를 삼각 측량하는데 이용될 수 있다.
예를 들면, 도 6에 도시된 기지국 수신기 아키텍쳐의 예를 고려해 보자. 거기에서, 고정 빔 위상 어레이 안테나 시스템은 다양한 하드웨어 소자와 함께 이용되어 복수의 빔을 고정된 각도 방향으로 생성한다. 위상 어레이 안테나 시스템은 복수의 안테나 소자를 포함할 수 있다. 그중의 제1 셋(602)는 수평 편광으로 신호를 수신하는데 이용되고, 반면에 제2 셋(604)은 수직 편광으로 신호를 수신하는데 적용될 수 있다. 선택적으로, 안테나의 양쪽 세트가 수평으로 또는 수직으로 편광될 수 있다. 그렇게 해서 수신된 신호는 각각 빔 형성 회로(606, 608)을 이용하여 처리된다. 임의의 종래 빔형성 매트릭스 기술은 각각 블럭(606, 608), 즉 소위 "버틀러(Butler)" 매트릭스 오퍼레이션에 의해 수행될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 수신 회로(612)는 그 자체 또는 수신된 신호(예를 들면 싱크 워드 또는 다른 주지된 심볼)의 일부만을 복조하는 복조기와 조합하여 신호 세기 측정 장치가 될 수 있다. 이하에 기술되는 것과 같이, 제공되는 수신 회로는 원하는 수의 빔을 선택하는데 필요한 정보에 좌우된다. 이 실시예에서, 8개의 수신된 빔 중 4개의 빔이 수신된 이동국 신호 전력의 순서로 블럭(614)에서 선택된다. 그러나, 당업계의 숙련자에게는 임의의 원하는 선택 기술, 예를 들면 주지된 싱크 워드 또는 기타 주지된 정보 심볼을 통해 신호 전력과 같은 신호 품질 정보를 이용한 선택 방법이 이용될 수 있다는 것이 자명하다. 4개의 선택된 빔에서 수신된 신호의 동기는 등화기(618)에 의해 순차적으로 등화가 수행되면서 블럭(616)에서 수행된다. 정보는 순차적으로 디코딩되고 주지된 기술에 따라 처리된다.
도 7에 어레이 패턴의 예가 도시되는데, 이는 도 6의 수신기 아키텍쳐의 어레이가 -60°와 60°간의 각도 범위를 커버하는데 이용된다. 이 도면으로부터 알 수 있는 바와 같이, 도 6의 수신기에 대해 특정 방향으로 로케이팅된 이동국은 하나 이상의 빔 상에서 보여질 것이다. 터미널 신호를 복수의 빔내에서 볼 수 있고, 이들 신호의 상대 전력을 알고 있으면, 상기 기술을 이용하여 터미널의 각방향을 결정할 수 있다. 그러므로, 단일 기지국에서, 이동국 위치의 방위 추정이 행해질 수 있다. 기지국으로부터 터미널로의 방위 추정이 2개 또는 그 이상의 기지국에 대해 얻어진다고 가정하면, 이러한 정보가 플롯(plot)되어 터미널의 위치를 삼각 측정할 수 있다. 각 기지국에서의 방위 추정은 더 나은 정확도를 위해 타임-스탬프될(time-stamped) 수 있다. 다른 방법으로는, 기지국이 전파 차이가 심각하지 않을 만큼 서로 근접한 것으로 가정될 수 있다. 그러므로, 조합되는 측정간 타임 간격을 지배하는 위치 추정을 원하는 정확도를 가지게 타임-스탬프된 방향 추정이 하나의 조합된 위치 추정을 형성하는데 이용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 150m의 위치 추정 정확도는 조합되는 측정값을 선정된 시간내에 수신된 것들로 제한된다.
상기 실시예는 삼각 측량법에 포함된 기지국이 동기되는 것을 요구하지는 않는다. 그러나, 동기된 기지국이 가용하다면, 방위 측정을 하는데 이용되는 신호의 도착 시간의 차이와 상기 기술한 방위 추정을 조합함으로써 더 나은 위치 정확도가 얻어질 수 있다. 예를 들면, 2개의 안테나로부터의 시간 차이 측정을 T12로 나타내자. 사용자 위치가 주어지면, 기대되는 시간 차이는 비선형 등식에 의해 주어질 것이다. 그러므로, 다음과 같이 수학식 8에 다른 용어가 첨가될 수 있다.
그리고나서, 동일 처리가 이전과 같이 수행될 수 있고, 수학식 12 및 수학식 13에 여분의 용어, 즉 수학식 13에및 수학식 12에를 부가하여 시간 지연 측정값을 계수한다.
당업계의 숙련자라면 본 발명의 사상 또는 실질적 특성이 벗어나지 않고서 다른 특정 형태로 실시될 수 있다는 것은 자명하다. 그러므로, 본 실시예들은 모든 측면에서 설명을 위한 것이지 제한하는 것으로 받아들여서는 안된다. 본 발명의 범위는 이전의 설명보다 추가된 청구 범위에 의해 더 잘 나타나고, 본 발명의 동일 의미와 범위에 미치는 모든 변화는 청구 범위내에 포함되도록 되어 있다.

- 무선 통신 시스템에서 스폿 빔으로 지역을 조사하는 어레이를 이용하여 터미널을 로케이팅하는 방법에 있어서,(a) 제1 기지국에서, 복수의 상기 스폿 빔의 각각에 연관되어 수신된 전력을 측정하는 단계;(b) 상기 수신된 전력과 연관된 상대 전력과 기준 전력을 비교하여 상기 상대 전력을 결정하는 단계;(c) 상기 상대 전력과 스폿 빔 형태의 모델을 이용하여 상기 제1 기지국과 관련된 상기 터미널의 제1 방위를 계산하는 단계;(d) 제2 기지국에 의해 상기 터미널로부터 수신된 신호에 대해 상기 단계 (a) 내지 (c)를 반복하여 상기 제2 기지국에 대한 상기 터미널의 제2 방위을 결정하는 단계; 및(e) 상기 제1 및 제2 방위을 이용하여 상기 터미널의 위치를 삼각 측량함으로써 상기 터미널을 로케이팅하는 단계를 포함하는 방법.
