Abstract
Description
Industrial use]
The present invention relates to a method of modifying the surface of a polymer. In particular, the present invention relates to a method of modifying a polymer material or a film surface of a polymer material to impart hydrophilicity or increase hydrophobicity.
Prior art]
In general, the separator of the cell isolates the anode and the cathode, and serves to pass the electrolyte or the ions while preventing a short circuit due to the fusion bonding between the two electrodes. In particular, the separator is an inert material that does not contribute to electrical energy by itself, but its mechanical properties affect battery performance and safety.
The separator of such a battery varies depending on the type of battery, and the separator used for a lithium battery requires different characteristics from those of a conventional battery, and various developments have recently been attempted.
In the battery separator, cellulose and nonwoven materials are used in the conventional battery field. However, in the lithium battery field, a novel microporous separator using a synthetic resin is used to satisfy the required characteristics. The reason is that the lithium ion battery uses an organic solvent having high activity as an electrolyte, and for this reason, a separator having a low reactivity with an organic solvent and a low cost polyolefin resin is used. And there is no example of practical use as a separator of a lithium ion battery using materials other than such polyolefin resin material.
On the other hand, polyolefin resin is widely used as a separator for lithium ion batteries due to various excellent physical properties and economical properties. However, this material has a low wettability to the separator due to its hydrophobicity. Indicates. Therefore, many efforts have been made to compensate for the hydrophobicity of such polyolefin-based membranes.
Such an attempt is a method of treating a membrane surface using a surfactant attempted by Hoechst Celanese, US Patent No. 3,231,530, US Patent No. 3,853,601, US Patent No. 3,951,815, US Patent 4,039,440, And a method of chemically bonding a hydrophilic monomer or polymer described in US Pat. No. 4,340,482 to the membrane.
Such methods are accompanied by several other incident chemical reactions, resulting in a decrease in the molecular weight of the polymer membrane, resulting in low durability of the prepared membrane, and also complicated process using these methods, which is not advantageous in terms of economy and mass production. Solvents have many problems, such as poor working environment.
Another attempt to modify the surface of the polymer film is a method of imparting hydrophilicity using corona or plasma. U.S. Patent No. 4,346,142, U.S. Patent 5,085,775, U.S. Patent 5,294,346 disclose that hydrophilic monomers such as acrylic acid and polymers such as polyethylene oxide are coated on the surface of the film using corona or plasma. A method of grafting is described. In addition, Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. Hei 8-31399 discloses plasma treatment or sputter etching while injecting oxygen and carbon tetrafluoride (CF 4 ) gas into the membrane surface for the separator of an alkaline secondary battery which requires both hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity due to its discharge characteristics. etching). However, these methods using plasma are difficult to control uniformly due to the unique characteristics of the plasma itself, such as high external environment dependence and wide energy distribution, and mechanical damage due to mechanical side damage due to other side reactions. There is a problem that it is difficult to satisfy the high level of physical properties required for the film.
On the other hand, the polymer surface modification method including the method of irradiating the ion surface with energy to the polymer surface under vacuum and simultaneously injecting reactive gas into the polymer surface to reduce the contact angle of the polymer surface or increase the adhesion Surface modified polymers are described in Korean Patent Laid-Open Publication No. 96-37742. This method reduces the contact angle of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) among surface-modified polymers to 8 ° and lowers the contact angle of the polymer surface so that water droplets continue to flow in the case of polycarbonate (PC). It is reported how.
However, the method of injecting the reactive gas simultaneously with the ion beam irradiation can etch the surface of the polymer due to the incident ionization of the reactive gas present in addition to the formation of free radicals on the surface of the polymer during ion beam irradiation. There is a problem that can lower the physical properties. In general, reactive gases are known to have a greater degree of polarity than gases used for ion beams, and thus, the degree of etching on the surface is increased when ionized without being present in a neutral state. This is especially true for membranes that are more susceptible to surface damage than other materials.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention in consideration of the problems of the prior art is to provide a method for modifying the surface of a polymer membrane without modifying the mechanical properties of the polymer membrane in the method of modifying the surface of the polymer membrane by ion beam irradiation and reactive gas injection.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method which can be obtained by a reaction gas for injecting a film surface modification into a desired hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity in a method for modifying a polymer membrane surface by ion beam irradiation and reactive gas injection.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a method for modifying a polymer membrane, which is easy to modify the surface of the polymer membrane, can have an excellent working environment without using a solvent, and is easy to mass produce.
Means for solving the problem]

The method of the present invention can be used for surface modification of most polymers as well as polymer membranes.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail.
The present invention injects a negative film into a vacuum chamber maintained in a high vacuum to inject ion generating gas into the ion gun to generate particles with energy, and then change the ion beam current to change the particles with energy to the polymer membrane surface. Irradiate on one or both sides of. In the polymer membrane irradiated with the ion beam, free radicals are formed on the polymer on the surface thereof, and after the free radicals are formed, the ion beam irradiation is stopped and a reactive gas is immediately injected around the membrane. It reacts with free radicals on the surface of the membrane to impart hydrophilicity or increase hydrophobicity to the surface of the polymer membrane.
The energy of the particles having energy by controlling the power supply connected to the ion gun is appropriate in the range of 0.01 to 100 keV, the injection rate of the reactive gas is appropriate in the range of 0.5 to 1000 ㎖ / minute, and the reactive gas is injected After that, the pressure in the vacuum chamber is preferably in the range of 10 −6 to 10 4 torr.
The degree of surface modification of the polymer membrane of the present invention includes gas injection rate and injection amount (pressure in a vacuum chamber) as variables related to ion particles to be irradiated and variables of reactive gas.
The injection of the reactive gas is preferably carried out under conditions free from interference of the ion particles irradiated in the previous step.
Conventional methods for simultaneously performing ion beam irradiation and reactive gas injection may cause damage to the surface of the polymer membrane by ionization of the reactive gas and ionization of the reactive gas by ion beam irradiation. After completion of the injection of the reactive gas can be modified to modify the surface of the polymer film without mechanical properties.
In addition, the method of the present invention is relatively easy to produce the surface-modified polymer membrane, because it does not use a solvent, can work in an excellent manufacturing environment, it is easy to mass production.
The method of the present invention can be applied to all kinds of polymer products such as polymer films other than polymer membranes, and also has excellent surface modification properties. The reason is that the reactive gas reacts with the surface of the polymer activated by ion beam irradiation to show hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity without affecting the matrix of the polymer itself.

Irradiation formed free radicals on both surfaces of the membrane. The ion beam energy at this time was 1 keV, and the ion irradiation amount was 10 16 ions / cm 2.
Immediately after the ion beam irradiation, oxygen gas was injected through the reactive gas injector at a rate of 200 ml / min until the pressure inside the vacuum vessel became atmospheric pressure.
Table 1 shows the physical properties of the microporous membrane prepared by introducing a polar group containing an oxygen atom on the surface of the membrane by the sequential reactive gas injection.

Surface Modification of Polyethylene Microporous Membranes Prepared by Wet Method
A polyethylene microporous membrane (manufactured by Tonen, Japan) prepared by a general wet method was introduced into a vacuum vessel maintained at 10 -5 to 10 -6 torr, and then hydrogen particles (H 2 + ) were irradiated on both sides of the membrane using an ion gun. Thereby forming free radicals on both surfaces of the membrane. The ion beam energy at this time was 0.7 keV, and the ion irradiation amount was 5 * 10 <15> ions / cm <2>.
Immediately after the ion beam irradiation, oxygen gas was injected through the reactive gas injector at a rate of 100 ml / min until the pressure inside the vacuum vessel was at atmospheric pressure.
Table 1 shows the physical properties of the microporous membrane prepared by introducing a polar group containing an oxygen atom on the surface of the membrane by the sequential reactive gas injection.
As shown in Table 1, the microporous membrane prepared by the polymer membrane surface modification method of the present invention exhibits the same mechanical properties as compared with the microporous membrane without surface treatment, and has a high water absorption rate and a low contact angle with respect to the electrolyte. It can be seen that the surface modification to hydrophilicity is effective.
In addition, the method of modifying the surface of the polymer membrane by injecting a reactive gas at the same time as the conventional ion particle irradiation, such as Comparative Example 2 and Comparative Example 3 has a hydrophilicity to increase the water absorption rate of the prepared microporous membrane, and to lower the contact angle to the electrolyte solution The surface modification method of the present invention shows that the surface modification method of the present invention exhibits superior surface modification to hydrophilicity without deteriorating mechanical properties, while mechanical properties such as tensile strength are largely lowered.
In the method of the present invention, in the method of modifying the surface of the polymer membrane by ion beam irradiation and reactive gas injection, the surface modification can be carried out without deteriorating the mechanical properties of the polymer membrane, and the reaction of injecting the surface modification of the membrane with the desired hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity. Obtained by gas.
In addition, the method of the present invention is easy to modify the surface of the polymer membrane, can use a solvent, have an excellent working environment, easy to mass production.
