Description
The present invention relates to a data clipping device and a display device including the same.
A liquid crystal display is one of the most widely used display devices currently, and is a display device that adjusts the amount of light transmitted by applying voltage to an electrode to rearrange liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer.
A typical liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel that displays an image and a backlight unit that provides light to the liquid crystal display panel.
The backlight unit includes light sources and a driving circuit for driving the light sources. The power consumption of this backlight unit accounts for most of the total power consumption of the liquid crystal display device.
To reduce power consumption of the backlight unit, a backlight dimming method is used. Backlight dimming methods include the Local Dimming Method, which divides the backlight into a plurality of blocks and controls the luminance for each block, and the Global Dimming Method, which lowers the backlight luminance of the entire display screen at once. Among them, the global dimming method is widely used because it can improve dynamic contrast and can be applied to any type of backlight unit.
As described above, the global dimming method lowers the backlight luminance of the entire display screen at once, so there is a risk that the backlight luminance may decrease. Accordingly, the global dimming method must increase the gray level of the pixel data to compensate for the decrease in luminance of the backlight, but there is a limit to the gray level compensation of the data. For example, in the case of 8-bit pixel data, the maximum gray level of the pixel data is 255, so it cannot be adjusted beyond that. Accordingly, the global dimming method can reduce the power consumption of the backlight unit, but the gray level may not be properly expressed due to saturation of the maximum gray level of the pixel data.
To solve this problem, there is a data clipping method that cuts out the highest gray level pixel data from the input image by a preset clipped rate and controls the maximum brightness of the backlight. Here, CLIP pixel data refers to pixel data that exceeds the brightness that can be expressed due to limitations in the maximum gray level value, and CLIP rate is a percentage value obtained by dividing the number of CLIP pixels by the total number of pixels in the input image.
The global dimming method determines the clipping rate and then generates a histogram of the input image to determine the gray level to be clipped in the image.
To explain in more detail, the existing global dimming method 1) generates a histogram for the image, 2) counts the number of pixels from the highest gray level in the histogram, and 3) dims the histogram until the count value exceeds a preset threshold. By repeating the count while lowering the gray level, the gray level just before the gray level that exceeds the threshold is set as the frame maximum value. 4) Once the frame maximum value is determined, the highest gray level is divided by the frame maximum value to obtain the frame gain. 5) The calculated frame gain is multiplied by the pixel data to modulate the pixel data to increase the brightness of the pixels and lower the maximum brightness of the backlight unit to reduce power consumption.
This existing global dimming method has the risk of increasing the number of clipped pixels. If the number of clipped pixels is large, the number of clipping artifacts that can be felt by the viewer increases, which can lead to deterioration in image quality. Here, artifact refers to a part of the video that you do not want to see. Additionally, clipping artifacts can be calculated with the annoyance level proposed in patent application 10-2013-0118088 (2013. 10. 02.) filed by the applicant of this application.
To improve this problem, a method of varying the frame gain was proposed by considering both the depth factor and the width factor of the artifact level, that is, the annoyance level. Here, the depth factor is an indicator that indicates the level of image quality deterioration that a person feels due to clipping artifacts, and the width factor is an index that indicates at what gradation the image quality deterioration due to clipping artifacts is felt. . However, this method had the problem of requiring additional memory capacity and requiring a large amount of computation.
In order to improve this problem, the present inventors used the histogram count accumulation method in patent application 10-2014-0154650 to double-accumulate the count, then use the double-accumulation count value to classify the level of clipping artifacts according to the image and frame according to the image characteristics. A dual cumulative metric to control gain was proposed.
This double cumulative metric can take into account both the depth factor and the whip factor of the clipping artifact, and thus matches well with the image quality deterioration felt by the observer, that is, the annoyance of the human visual system (hereinafter referred to as HVS), It was possible to more accurately predict the image quality deterioration felt by the user and adjust the frame gain.
However, in HVS, the factor for detecting the degree of artifact is not simply quantified by the amount of whips and depth, but all complex characteristics such as contrast sensitivity and luminance adaptation must be considered.
However, since the double cumulative metric only considers the depth factor and sweep factor of the clipping artifact and does not consider contrast sensitivity or luminance adaptation, there is a problem in that the observer can still feel the image quality deterioration.
Figures 1A and 1B are image samples, and Figure 1C is the result of testing the consistency of the dual accumulation metrics of Figures 1A and 1B and HVS annoyance. More clearly, FIG. 1A is a
Referring to FIG. 1C and [Table 1] below, it can be seen that the same dual accumulation metric was applied to
As seen above, even if the existing double accumulation metric is used, the observer may still feel image quality deterioration because the degree of HVS annoyance varies depending on the image.
Accordingly, the problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a data clipping device that can reduce HVS annoyance according to an image by using an SSIM metric that has a linear relationship with a dual accumulation metric, and a display device including the same.

구체적으로, TN(Twisted Nematic) 모드, VA(Vertical Alignment) 모드, IPS(In Plane Switching) 모드, FFS(Fringe Field Switching) 등의 액정 모드를 구현할 수 있다.
백라이트(240)의 광원은 HCFL(Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp), CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp), EEFL(Exteral ELEctrode Fluorescent Lamp), LED(Light Emitting Diode) 중 어느 하나로 구현될 수 있다.

This is a diagram showing the HVS values according to the following diagram.
Here, when the HVS value is 5 points, the observer cannot detect image quality deterioration, when the HVS value is 4 points, image quality deterioration can be detected but not annoying, and when the HVS value is 3 points, it is a state of slightly annotating, and 2 Assuming that a point is a tolerable annotation state, and 1 point is an unbearable annotation state, when the HVS value is 4.5 points, it can be set in advance as the JND section. At this time, defining the JND section according to the HVS value may be changed depending on the design of this algorithm.
Referring to Figure 5c, looking at the SSIM value when the HVS value has a value similar to 4.5 points, the SSIM value can be selected as 0.9820 through Figure 5b.
The SSIM annoyance value can be predicted using the SSIM value selected in this way. Specifically, the SSIM annoyance value can be calculated by calculating (1-SSIM value) and then dividing it by the luminance adaptation. The luminance adaptation value corresponds to a type of correction coefficient that is set as an image brightness correction value that varies depending on the image.
