Description
The present invention relates to a cover glass laser processing device and method, and in particular, to grinding and polishing cover glass (windows) used in foldable flexible displays by ultra-short pulse laser processing. It relates to a cover glass laser processing device and method that can improve the processing productivity and product yield of ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) by removing the material.
In general, thin glass is used in mobile phones and display devices, and cutting and processing of the cut surface is repeated countless times according to size from production to display products.
Methods for cutting such thin glass include creating scribing lines on the glass surface to create fine cracks on the glass surface and applying shock or vibration to these mechanically weak parts to break them due to the propagation of the cracks. Waterjet methods for cutting by spraying water and cutting methods using lasers are used.
However, no matter what method is used, glass has high hardness and is highly brittle, making it vulnerable to mechanical shock, so microscopic cracks occur at the cut edges. These microcracks gradually progress over time, leading to damage to the glass plate itself. You can come. In addition, even if the glass plate itself is not damaged, these cracks may cause damage to the glass plate during other subsequent processes, and other parts may be damaged due to broken pieces of the glass plate, so it is necessary to remove fine cracks at the edges of the glass plate. There is.
Accordingly, in general, in order to remove fine cracks at the edges of the glass plate, a diamond wheel is used to grind or polish the fine cracks or sharp edges of the cut edges of the glass plate, and then chamfer or round the edges of the glass plate to remove these cracks.
However, during this grinding or polishing process, glass powder is generated. This glass powder not only contaminates the working environment but also sticks to the product and causes damage such as scratches. To prevent this, cleaning, drying, and inspection are performed after polishing. The same series of additional operations or additional processes such as attaching a protective film are required, which increases manufacturing costs. Additionally, there is a problem that another crack may occur during this grinding and polishing process.
As a related prior art, Korean Patent Publication No. 10-2013-0003237 discloses “a device for removing cracks at the cutting edge of a glass plate.”
Mobile products mainly use liquid crystal displays, LED panels, OLED panels, and touch panels as displays, and screen protection glass is used to protect the surface of the display.
This glass is cut using a laser, scriber, water jet, etc. depending on the size of the display to which it is applied, and then goes through a surface treatment process and a strengthening process.
The above-mentioned glass surface treatment and strengthening processes necessarily involve a polishing process on the cut surface to prevent the glass from breaking, that is, to increase roughness. At this time, the polishing process is performed by chamfering using a grinding method and polishing wet processing using a mimic cam.
However, even if the dry and wet processes such as grinding or polishing are performed, the cross section of the processed glass still has low strength and has weak brittleness.
In particular, recent mobile products emphasize their design and are manufactured with various round (R) values using thin glass for the purpose of minimizing thickness. Therefore, chamfering of the rounded cross section is important for increasing the breaking strength of glass.
In other words, even if the cross-section of glass is processed using the dry and wet processes described above, there are minute cracks (micro-cracks), chipping, burrs, etc. on the processed surface, which prevents external shock (dropping). It has the disadvantage of being sheared by stress.
In this way, there is a limit to increasing the breaking strength by mechanical processing of the cross section of sized glass.
In addition, the equipment for grinding and polishing wet processing according to these mechanical processing methods is complex, is large in size and occupies a large space due to a series of processing lines, and has a long tact time due to multiple processing processes. There is a downside to low productivity. That is, cleaning and drying are required as finishing processes, and these additional steps increase manufacturing costs. In addition, there is a disadvantage in that even after completion of cleaning, fine particles remain on the surface of the thin glass and cause damage, thereby reducing the yield of the finished product.
However, since the technology disclosed in these patent documents processes edges using grinding or chamfering, the generation of glass dust cannot be avoided, and in addition, problems such as broken edges during the grinding process, surface scratches caused by glass powder dust, and workers It is inevitable that various problems, such as exposure to glass dust, will occur.
Accordingly, there continues to be a demand for new processing methods and equipment that can fundamentally prevent the generation of glass dust.
Unlike
However,
Recently, mobile products have adopted foldable flexible displays, and for the purpose of protecting the surface of the OLED panel display, the cover glass (window) has a curvature radius of 1.4R to 2R (the radius of curvature of a circle with a radius of 1.4mm to 2mm). There is a need to develop materials that can realize this.
Using CPI (Colorless Polyimide) as a cover glass, which is a material with high surface hardness and scratch resistance for foldable flexible displays, cannot achieve a curvature radius of 1.4R to 2R.
이에 독일의 쇼트사(SCHOTT AG)는 리튬 알루미노실리케이트(LAS) 유리를 '다운 드로우 기술(down-draw process)을 적용하여 1.4R~2R의 곡률 반경을 실현한 초박막 강화유리(UTG; Ultra Thin Glass)를 개발하여 제공하고 있다.Accordingly, Germany's SCHOTT AG developed lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass into ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG; Ultra Thin) that achieved a radius of curvature of 1.4R to 2R by applying down-draw technology. Glass) has been developed and provided.
In general, when an OLED panel composed of multiple layers is folded, folding stress is applied in which compressive stress occurs on the front of the panel and tensile stress occurs simultaneously on the back of the panel. The folding stress increases as the curvature becomes smaller.
In the case of 0.4mm thick glass used as cover glass for LCD, cracks do not occur easily even when processed with a diamond wheel processor, but the ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) has a cover glass thickness of 0.03mm, so it is cut and processed with a diamond wheel processor. There is a problem in that not only burrs occur when grinding, but also fine cracks occur during edge grinding, which reduces the yield.
The ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) goes through a five-step process from bonding to debonding when processing a raw plate using a CNC cutting method, so it is necessary to simplify the process.
Along with the simplification of the ultra-thin tempered glass (UTG) process, curved processing of the edges of the cover glass (window) can cause chipping, cracking, and/or sheet rupture when performed by mechanical processing. This can cause serious damage to the edges of the same glass. Defects at the glass edges are often observed in the intersection areas between major surfaces and edges (eg, around sharp 90 degree corners).
