Description
The present invention relates to the field of negative pressure wound treatment. More particularly, the present invention relates to a bridge for facilitating fluid flow from multiple pressure sources that are difficult to access wound sites.
The main purpose of negative pressure wound therapy (also referred to as "decompression therapy" or "vacuum therapy" in the medical community) is to apply reduced pressure (also referred to as "negative pressure" or "vacuum pressure" but will be referred to herein as "decompression") at the wound site. It is applied to promote healing and to remove excess exudate from the wound site. The main components of a negative pressure wound therapy system ("NPWT system") are a reduced pressure source (e.g., vacuum pump), a waste canister to collect exudate extracted from the wound site, and a wound dressing/enclosure to fill/cover the wound site. , and tubing that fluidly connects the wound dressing/enclosure to the pressure relief source and to the canister. Wound dressings typically include a wound filler such as foam or gauze and a thin film (typically a polyurethane film) adhesively applied over the wound filler and to the patient's skin around the wound site. The membrane creates a substantially sealed enclosure at the wound site. A hole is typically provided in the membrane near the center of the wound to allow the wound dressing to be fluidly coupled to the pressure source via a "dome" that fluidly connects the tubing to the hole in the membrane.
To assist the decompression source, the presence of additional airflow in the dome was judged to play an important role in moving exudate from the wound site into the canister. Vents to the atmosphere around the dome have traditionally been a source of this additional airflow. However, the use of ambient/environmental air from outside the NPWT system causes air quality problems. Also, it is difficult to manage the additional airflow along with the decompression from the decompression source using vents in the dome.
Additionally, the location of the wound site often does not allow convenient placement of a hard, bulky, and/or non-conforming dome over the wound site. Thus, in this situation, the dome is positioned at a spaced distance from the wound site and a bridge, typically made of soft materials, is used to fluidly couple the dome to the wound dressing, or the dome is omitted entirely and tubing from the pressure source is connected to the bridge. are directly connected In the former solution to difficult access to wound sites, the distance between the bridge and the dome has been found to prevent dual airflow in the dome from significantly affecting exudate removal from the wound site into the canister. In the latter solution, the scavenged dual airflow is usually omitted if access to the wound sites is difficult, or a vent is placed in the bridge or wound dressing, which still introduces environmental air into the NPWT system that cannot be effectively managed as mentioned above. has an undesirable effect.
Accordingly, what is needed is an improved NPWT system bridge to deliver reduced pressure to a wound dressing with a manageable additional airflow to facilitate the flow of exudate from the wound site to the canister. Moreover, it is desirable to provide such an airflow without introducing ambient air from the surrounding environment.

Referring initially to FIG. 1 , the present invention generally relates to a NPWT system (10) having a reduced pressure source (12) configured to deliver reduced pressure through a reduced pressure tubing (14) to a wound dressing (16) to be placed at a wound site. will be. As is understood in the art, a wound dressing 16 typically consists of a foam/
For purposes of this invention, "fluidically coupled" (or "fluidically coupled") refers to two or more structures or fluids, recognizing the possibility of intervening particular structures or parts used to fluidly connect fluid passages. Note that passages refer to being in fluid communication with each other. For example, as discussed above,
In certain embodiments, as shown in FIG. 1 , a
For the purposes of the present invention, the secondary pressure provided by the
The converged
In preferred embodiments, the reduced
According to the preferred embodiments described herein, the fluid flows in the first
Still referring to FIG. 1 , the first closed volume of the
According to another aspect of the
When both the
Referring to FIG. 2 , a lower cross-sectional view of
Still referring to FIG. 2 , the
In certain embodiments,
It was determined that improved exudate clearance was observed if the point where the
Referring to FIG. 3 , a cross-sectional side view of another embodiment of a
2 and 3, the
In certain embodiments, the aforementioned first sealing
In certain embodiments, first sealing
According to another aspect of the present invention, referring to FIGS. 4 to 9 ,
Referring to FIG. 5 , a dual
Referring to FIG. 6 , another modular component may have a

Referring to FIG. 8 , a structure similar to that of FIG. 7 is shown in which
In another exemplary configuration shown in FIG. 9 , a plurality of single lumen extending elements fluidly guides the first
