Aromatic nitrophenols are highly toxic organic pollutants. (Ramu et al., 2020) NPs include the most widely used industrial raw materials for the manufacture of dyes, textiles, pharmaceuticals, paper, pesticides, etc. (Li et al., 2012; Jin et al., 2018; Dinesh et al., 2017) On the other hand, DNP and TNP have been widely used as explosives in warfare and industry, commonly known as explosophores. (Bhattacharjee et al., 2016) Therefore, the waste discharged from the above industries promotes the accumulation of toxic pollutants and affects the ecosystem. In general, aromatic phenol substituted with a nitro group is very toxic to the human body and species because it can seriously damage the metabolism of the human body. (He et al., 2019) Because nitrophenols are very soluble in water, they easily enter the human food chain and can impair the functioning of the liver, kidneys and central nervous system. Overexposure to this toxic compound can cause cyanosis, coma, and even death. (Hashemi et al., 2020; Uberoi et al., 1997) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified nitrophenol as a top pollutant due to its high toxicity. (Ahmad et al., 2020) Therefore, it is highly desirable to remove nitrophenols from the environment.
Methods developed so far to remove nitrophenols from wastewater include photochemical degradation, adsorption, microbial degradation, membrane distillation, and electrocoagulation. (Awad et al., 2012; Zhang et al., 2019; Zhou et al., 2014; Oturan et al., 2014) However, the above technique has some practical limitations, such as low removal efficiency, high cost process and generation of harmful products.
Meanwhile, a method for removing toxic nitro compounds from the environment by catalytic reduction of natrophenol to an amino derivative is emerging as a new alternative. (Neal et al., 2019) Reduction products, i.e. aminophenols, are harmless compounds to the environment and are widely used as synthetic intermediates for various products such as antipyretics, corrosion inhibitors, dyes, and pigments. (Saha et al., 2010) Accordingly, catalytic reduction techniques in the reduction of nitrophenols are receiving more attention. Since it has been demonstrated that nitrophenol reduction does not proceed without a catalyst, there is a need for an appropriate and efficient catalyst development at low cost.
In the nitrophenol reduction reaction so far, inert metal catalysts such as Au, Pt, Pd, Ir, and Ag exhibited high catalytic activity. (Liu et al., 2011; Liu et al., 2016; Coccia et al., 2012; Gao et al., 2016) However, the catalyst is very expensive and reserves are not abundant. Recently, many papers have reported that catalytic activity is better when transition metal oxides such as ZnO, Fe 2 O 3 , MnO 2 and rare earth metal oxides are used when nitrophenol reduction is performed. (Bhattacharjee et al., 2016; Wu et al., 2014; Ravi et al., 2019) Metal oxides have been widely used in various applications such as catalysis, drug dosing and sensors due to their high chemical stability even under harsh conditions. It has been reported by Zhang et al. that the particle size, shape, and surface area of metal oxides are key factors for high catalytic activity. (Zhang et al., 2020) However, nanomaterials can agglomerate easily in aqueous solvents due to their nanoparticle size and large surface area. Due to this, the aggregation phenomenon of the metal oxide decreased the catalytic reduction efficiency.
(Sonavane 외, 2004) Mixed metal oxides (MMOs) are a suitable catalyst form to overcome the above-mentioned problems. The material is widely used in a variety of industries including ceramics, medical, electronics, and primarily catalytic applications. (Karuppasamy et al., 2020; Arasu et al., 2019; Priya et al., 2020; Alwin et al., 2017) Interactions of metal-metal and metal-oxygen-metal bonds in mixed metal oxides enhance the chemical and physical properties of mixed metal oxides. Increases charge transfer, surface area, and charge carriers. (Zeid et al, 2020) reported by Hosseini et al. that mixed metal oxides show higher catalytic efficiency than single metal oxides in amino perchlorate decomposition. (Hosseini et al., 2015) In addition, Sonavane et al. reported the selective catalytic reduction of C=O in α,β-unsaturated carbonyls using metal mixed oxides. (Sonavane et al., 2004)
On the other hand, CuO/NiO is a typical metal mixed oxide composed of Cu and Ni metal centers. The catalytic performance of CuO/NiO NPs is highly dependent on particle size, crystallinity and active surface area, and studies on this are needed.

2.1 CuO/NiO NP의 XRD 및 FTIR 분석2.1 XRD and FTIR Analysis of CuO/NiO NPs
The diffraction peaks and crystal properties of Cu-doped NiO hybrid nanoparticles were confirmed using XRD analysis (range of 10 to 90˚). 1 shows an XRD pattern and a heat treatment sample of a Cu-doped NiO hybrid composite. The uncalcined sample showed weak diffractive reflections due to the formation of heteroheteronuclear complexes at 2θ = 15˚, 26.1˚, 34.1˚, 40.1˚, 43.3˚ and 61.28˚. The calcined and Cu-doped NiO samples showed intense diffractive reflections with peaks at 2θ=37.1°, 43.2°, 63.0°, 75.2°, 79.4°, indicating that the cubic phase planes of CuO and NiO (111), (200) , (220), (311) and (222). Through the obtained XRD pattern, it was confirmed that the metal was completely converted into hybrid CuO/NiO nanoparticles. In addition, the point that the impurity peak was no longer observed in the calcined sample indicates the phase purity of the CuO/NiO nanoparticles. Therefore, the calcination process enhanced the crystallinity of CuO/NiO hybrid nanoparticles. In addition, the average crystal size was calculated using the Debye-Scherrer equation. The average crystal size of the synthesized CuO/NiO NPs was about 19.38 nm.
In addition, functional groups and metal oxide bonding of the synthesized CuO/NiO NPs were confirmed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. 2 shows the FTIR spectrum of CuO/NiO NPs. Almost similar patterns were observed in both the calcined and uncalcined samples. It can be seen that well-defined Ni II -O and Cu II -O stretching vibration peaks appear at 623 and 408 cm -1 , respectively. The peaks at 821 and 1371 cm −1 correspond to the CuO/NiO surface on which moisture is absorbed. In addition, a broad peak was observed at 3367.7 cm -1 due to water molecules absorbed on the surface. Therefore, the formation of CuO/NiO hybrid nanoparticles can be confirmed through the Ni II -O and Cu II -O stretching vibration peaks. Also, the strong band appearing at 1357 cm -1 corresponds to the NO 3 -expansion frequency of the complex.

On the other hand, the calcined CuO/NiO NP samples of FIGS. 4d to 4f show relatively small spherical crystals of CuO and NiO and are evenly distributed. Thus, the calcination process improves the surface area of the catalyst. The EDX spectra of both samples confirmed the presence of Cu, Ni and O elements. In addition, the element distribution diagrams (SI. 2 and SI. 3) of both samples confirmed the presence of the above-mentioned elements in the CuO/NiO hybrid nanoparticles.

3.1 Reduction of Toxic Aromatic Nitrophenols
It is very important to reduce (or) remove from the environment the high toxicity of aromatic nitrophenols (compounds of
3.2 Catalytic Removal of Nitrophenols
Catalytic reduction of nitrophenol (compounds of
After the nitrophenol reduction reaction, the catalyst surface morphology and chemical composition were analyzed using SEM and ATR-FTIR at room temperature. Figure 9 shows a similar spherical crystal morphology of pure CuO/NiO NPs, which demonstrates the stability of the catalyst. Therefore, NaBH 4 does not affect the surface morphology of CuO/NiO NPs. In the case of the FTIR spectrum shown in FIG. 10, no noticeable change was observed in the IR peak before and after the nitrophenol-reduced sample.
