Description
The present invention relates to a transparent display device capable of providing an optimal perceived image quality to a user by adjusting transmittance in consideration of image characteristics and a user distance, and a method of driving the same.
With the recent development of display devices, transparent display devices using liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been developed.
Since the transparent display device transmits light in both front and rear directions, information can be displayed in both directions of the display device, and each user facing the display device with the display device therebetween can see beyond the transparent display device.
Since the transparent display device can be applied to various application products such as automobile glass, building glass, advertisement signboard, cooler door, screen door, and the like, the user environment is diversified.
Referring to FIG. 1 , a transparent display device uses an R, G, B, and W (white) sub-pixel structure having high transmittance compared to an R (Red), G (Green), and B (Blue) sub-pixel structure. However, the RGBW sub-pixel structure has a problem in that the luminance of a pure color is deteriorated because the number of RGB sub-pixels expressing colors at the same resolution is relatively reduced.
Therefore, in a transparent display device using four color subpixels, a luminance compensation method of reducing the transmittance of the background portion is considered when an image with a high pure color is input. There is a problem of degradation.
The present invention provides a transparent display device capable of providing an optimal perceived image quality to a user by adjusting transmittance in consideration of image characteristics and a user distance, and a method of driving the same.
A transparent display device according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a transparent display unit for displaying image data, a distance sensor mounted on the transparent display device to sense a user's distance, and a display driving unit for driving the transparent display unit by supplying image data; , and an image processing circuit.
When the image processing circuit analyzes the input image and determines that the image is a pure color image, the image processing circuit analyzes the input image to detect the transmissive region and the non-transmissive region, and adjusts the luminance of the image data of the transmissive region according to the distance information sensed from the distance sensor and outputs it do.
The image processing circuit converts three-color data of the input image into four-color data before analyzing the input image.
The image processing circuit converts W data among the four color data of the non-transmissive region into luminance enhancement data (maximum value) and outputs the converted data.
A method of driving a transparent display device according to an embodiment of the present invention converts three-color data of an input image into four-color data and analyzes the four-color data of the input image to determine whether it is a pure-color image. When it is determined that the image is a pure color image, the transmissive region and the non-transmissive region are detected by analyzing the four-color data of the input image. The distance between the user and the transparent display device is sensed using the distance sensor. The luminance of the four-color data of the transmission region is adjusted according to the sensed distance information, and the luminance-controlled four-color data is output.
Any one of a plurality of gain values (gain functions) for adjusting luminance according to the sensed distance information is selected, and the four-color data of the transmission region is compensated using the selected gain values (gain functions). As the sensed distance information is closer, the degree of luminance compensation of the four-color data of the transmission region using the gain value (gain function) is reduced.
A transparent display device and a driving method thereof according to an embodiment of the present invention analyze an input image and adjust the luminance of the transmissive region according to the user's distance when it is determined that the image has a high pure color, and also adjust the brightness of the W sub-pixel in the non-transmissive region. By emphasizing the luminance, the degree of luminance compensation (transmittance reduction) of the transmissive area (background part) is reduced when the user distance is close, thereby improving the transmittance compared to the prior art and improving the perceptual transparency through the non-transmissive area. It can provide high quality.

Prior to the description of the embodiments of the present invention, a phenomenon of perceived image quality deterioration of the transparent display device according to the prior art of the present invention will be first described as an example.
FIG. 2 is a diagram for explaining a method of compensating for background luminance with respect to a pure color image in a transparent display device according to a prior art of the present invention, and FIG. 3 is a view for explaining a background luminance for a pure color image of a transparent display device according to the prior art of the present invention. This is a picture showing the reward result of
The transparent display device according to the prior art has four-color sub-pixels and has a high transmittance compared to three-color sub-pixels. However, due to the low luminance of pure colors, as shown in FIG. When a pure color image is input, a technique for increasing the perceptual luminance of the pure color image is used by applying a luminance compensation method that reduces the transmittance of the background luminance displaying white, that is, the luminance.
However, the transparent display device according to the prior art has a problem in that the level of object recognition on the rear surface of the transparent display device is lowered by reducing the transmittance of the background portion in the input image having a high pure color to about 75%.
For example, as shown in FIG. 3( a ), when luminance compensation technology for reducing transmittance is applied, compared to the case where luminance compensation for reducing transmittance of the background is not applied, as shown in FIG. 3( b ) As shown, it can be seen that the recognition level of the rear object is lowered.
Although the transparent display device requires high transmittance so that the rear object can be seen clearly, the prior art has a disadvantage in that it does not take into account the user's environment for using the transparent display device by adjusting the transmittance in consideration of only the characteristics of the input image.
When a user tries to recognize an object on the back side of the transparent display device (inside the transparent refrigerator) through a transparent display device applied to a transparent refrigerator, etc., most users have a characteristic of getting closer to the transparent display device. A transparent display device is intended to provide an optimal perceived image quality to a user by adjusting transmittance in consideration of the user's distance as well as image characteristics.
Hereinafter, a transparent display device and a driving method thereof according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described.

Meanwhile, the pure-color
When a pure color image determination signal is input from the pure color

The
The
For example, as shown in FIG. 7 , in the section in which the input image is determined to be a pure color, the luminance of the transmission region corresponding to the background portion is compensated to decrease at different compensation rates according to distance information.
The
The
8 is a diagram illustrating a W subpixel enhancement result of a non-transmissive area in a transparent display device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 8 , when the R sub-pixels of the non-transmissive region display a pure color of red, as shown in (a), there is a disadvantage in that the pure color perceived by the user is reduced, but as shown in (b), the W sub-pixel It can be seen that when pixel data is converted to the maximum value and displayed, transparency is improved in the non-transmissive area, and thus perceived image quality is improved.
9 is a photograph showing comparison of background luminance compensation results according to a sensing distance of a transparent display device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIG. 9( a ), when the transparent display device displays a pure color image and the distance from the user is long (prior art), the degree of decrease in luminance of the transparent region corresponding to the background portion is large, so that the transmittance of the background portion is lowered It can be seen that the recognition level of the rear object is low.
Referring to FIG. 9( b ), in the present invention, when a pure-color image is displayed and the distance from the user is close, the degree of decrease in luminance of the transmission region corresponding to the background portion is reduced, so that the transmittance of the background portion is improved, thereby recognizing the rear object. It can be seen that the perceived image quality is improved as the transparency is improved by the emphasis of the W data in the non-transparent area as well as the high level.
As described above, in the transparent display device and the driving method thereof according to an embodiment of the present invention, when it is determined that the image has a high pure color by analyzing the input image, the luminance of the transparent region is adjusted according to the distance of the user, and the brightness of the non-transmissive region is adjusted. By emphasizing the luminance of the W sub-pixel in , when the user distance is close, the degree of luminance compensation (transmittance reduction) of the transmissive area (background part) is reduced, which improves transmittance compared to the prior art, and the perceptual transparency through the non-transmissive area is improved. It is possible to provide optimal perceptual image quality to users.
