Description
본 발명은 Co 산화물을 포함하는 수전해전극용 촉매의 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 구체적으로, 산소 공극을 가지는 Co 산화물을 포함하는 수전해전극용 촉매의 제조방법, 그로부터 제조된 수전해전극용 촉매를 포함하는 수전해전극 및 수전해 장치에 관한 것이다.The present invention relates to a method for preparing a catalyst for a water electrolysis electrode containing Co oxide. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method for preparing a catalyst for a water electrolysis electrode including Co oxide having oxygen voids, a water electrolysis electrode and a water electrolysis device including the catalyst for a water electrolysis electrode prepared therefrom.
탄소 기반 에너지 저장 장치 사용에 의해 야기되는 지구 온난화의 가속화로 인하여 신 재생 에너지에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 특히, 물의 전기 분해를 이용하여 수소를 전기화학적으로 생산하는 방법이 광범위하게 연구되어 왔고, 여기서 생산된 수소는 연료 전지나 직접 연소 기관 등에 사용될 수 있다.The demand for renewable energy is increasing due to the acceleration of global warming caused by the use of carbon-based energy storage devices. In particular, a method for producing hydrogen electrochemically using electrolysis of water has been extensively studied, and the hydrogen produced here can be used in a fuel cell, a direct combustion engine, or the like.
Electrochemical water splitting occurs in two reactions: hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution (OER). Ideally, in water electrolysis, if a voltage of 1.23V is applied, the reaction can proceed. However, in reality, an overvoltage of 1.23V or more must be applied in order to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis due to the effect of surface resistance. Therefore, in order to increase the efficiency of water electrolysis by reducing the cost of electric energy, it is necessary to reduce the overvoltage for water electrolysis. Therefore, a catalyst capable of reducing the overvoltage in the hydrogen generation reaction and the oxygen generation reaction is required, respectively.
수전해를 위한 비 귀금속 전극 촉매를 개발하는 궁극적인 목표는 수소(H2) 생산을 위한 대규모 산업 응용에의 적용이다. 산업용으로 사용하기 위해서는 1.8 ~ 2.4 V에서 물을 분리할 때 높은 전류 밀도(≥ 500mA/cm2)가 필요하다. The ultimate goal of developing a non-precious metal electrode catalyst for water electrolysis is its application to large-scale industrial applications for hydrogen (H 2 ) production. For industrial use, high current density (≥ 500 mA/cm 2 ) is required to separate water at 1.8 to 2.4 V.
What is important is to ensure the performance of commercial devices such as proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE) and anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE) under real operating conditions as well as catalyst-scale performance. The production of hydrogen gas (H 2 ) at the cathode in commercial water electrolysis devices is severely limited by the slow reaction kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 4OH → O 2 + 2H 2 O + 4e − ) at the anode. Despite the importance of OER, the high overvoltage of OER still acts as a rate-determining step (RDS) and reduces the efficiency of the water electrolysis reaction.
따라서, 에너지 효율을 높이기 위해서는 고효율 OER 전극 촉매를 개발하여야 한다.Therefore, in order to increase energy efficiency, it is necessary to develop a high-efficiency OER electrode catalyst.
Recently, many OER electrode catalysts are composed of non-noble metals with excellent activity such as transition metal sulfide (TMS), transition metal phosphate (TMP), layered double hydroxide (LDH) and transition metal oxide. The reported OER electrochemical catalyst has a very low overvoltage ( below 300 mV at 10 mA / cm 2 ) with excellent durability, so it is expected that it will soon be used in commercial water electrolysis devices. However, most studies do not report the performance of commercial devices. This is because, unlike catalyst studies, there are various variables such as membrane electrode assembly (MEA) manufacturing conditions, cell operating temperature, electrolyte flow rate, and cell manufacturing pressure.
Traditionally, catalysts have been synthesized in powder form. In order to use such a powder catalyst, it is necessary to perform a process of manufacturing an electrode using the powder catalyst. Even when the same catalyst is used, the electrode manufacturing process is very important because the performance of the electrode can vary greatly depending on the electrode manufacturing process. The parameters of the electrode manufacturing process are the composition of the ink consisting of solvent, catalyst and binder and the coating method on the substrate. In addition, since it is heat-treated or pressurized at a high pressure when manufacturing the electrode, there are various variables, so it is difficult to optimize the electrode manufacturing process conditions.
한편, 금속 산화물 촉매에서 산소 공극(oxygen vacancy)이 있는 경우 촉매 활성을 증가시킨다는 것이 알려져 있다.On the other hand, it is known that the presence of oxygen vacancy in the metal oxide catalyst increases the catalytic activity.
예를 들어, 비특허문헌 1(Porous cobalt oxide nanoplates enriched with oxygen vacancies for oxygen evolution reaction, W. Xu 등, Nano Energy 43(2018) 110-116)에는 리간드 보조된 폴리올 환원 방법을 사용하여 산소 공극이 풍부한 다공성 코발트 산화물 나노플레이트를 제조하는 방법이 개시되어 있다.For example, in Non-Patent Document 1 (Porous cobalt oxide nanoplates enriched with oxygen vacancies for oxygen evolution reaction, W. Xu et al., Nano Energy 43 (2018) 110-116), oxygen voids are formed using a ligand-assisted polyol reduction method. A method for preparing an enriched porous cobalt oxide nanoplate is disclosed.

When the thickness of the catalyst layer has a value within the above numerical range, it is possible to prevent the catalyst layer from falling off or dissolution according to the degradation mechanism during the oxygen evolution reaction, thereby reducing the performance, and as the non-conductive catalyst layer becomes thick, the electrical conductivity becomes It is possible to prevent the lowering of the oxygen generating activity.
본 발명의 다른 구현예에 따른 상기 수전해장치는 본 발명에 따른 수전해전극을 애노드로 포함한다. The water electrolysis device according to another embodiment of the present invention includes the water electrolytic electrode according to the present invention as an anode.

98% of Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O was added to distilled water to prepare a precursor solution containing 24.5 mM Co oxide precursor. Then, the pH of the precursor solution was adjusted to 9.5 using ammonia water to form Co hydroxide precipitated particles. The Co hydroxide precipitated particles prepared as described above were vacuum freeze-dried at a temperature of -65 ℃ and a pressure of 5 mTorr for 24 hours using FD8508 of Ilshin Bio, and then heat-treated at a temperature of 200 ℃ to Co oxide particles was prepared.
형성된 Co 산화물 입자 500mg을 300mM NaBH4 용액에 600rpm으로 1시간동안 교반하였다. 결과물을 탈이온수로 수 회 헹군 다음 시료를 -70℃ 에서 24시간동안 동결 건조하여 수전해 전극용 촉매 시료를 얻었다.500 mg of the formed Co oxide particles were stirred in a 300 mM NaBH 4 solution at 600 rpm for 1 hour. 수전해전극용 촉매 시료의 표면 및 단면 관찰Surface and cross-section observation of catalyst samples for water electrolysis electrodes
The shape and composition of catalyst samples for water electrolysis electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples were analyzed by TEM (JEOL, JEM2100F) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern The pattern was recorded on an X-ray diffractometer with Cu Ka-radiometer (D8 Advance, Bruker). The scan range was 30-80° and the scan rate was 1°/min. XPS was measured with an XPS spectrometer (K-Alpha, Thermo VG Scientific).
도 2는 본 발명의 실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 수전해 전극용 촉매 시료의 TEM 사진(도 2(a)), XRD 사진(도 2(b)) 및 결정립 크기와 격자 파라미터를 나타낸 그래프(도 2(c))이다.2 is a TEM photograph (FIG. 2(a)), an XRD photograph (FIG. 2(b)), and a graph showing the grain size and lattice parameters of the catalyst sample for an electrolytic electrode prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples of the present invention (Fig. 2(c)).
도 2(a)에서 보듯이, NaBH4 용액으로 처리한 전 후의 TEM 사진을 비교해보면, 산소 공극이 형성된 것을 알 수 있다. 즉, Co 산화물의 환원에 의한 산소 공극 형성으로 본 발명에 따른 수전해전극은 촉매층의 비표면적이 넓어져 촉매 활성 사이트가 많아지므로 높은 촉매 활성을 가질 수 있다. As shown in FIG. 2(a), comparing the TEM photos before and after treatment with NaBH 4 solution, it can be seen that oxygen voids are formed. That is, the water electrolytic electrode according to the present invention can have high catalytic activity because the specific surface area of the catalyst layer increases and the number of catalytically active sites increases due to the formation of oxygen voids by the reduction of Co oxide.
도 2(b)에 따르면, 실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 수전해전극용 촉매 시료는 스피넬 구조의 다결정 Co3O4로 확인되었다. 이로부터 NaBH4 용액 처리 이후에도 스피넬 구조를 유지함을 알 수 있다. According to FIG. 2(b), the catalyst samples for water electrolysis electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples were identified as polycrystalline Co3O4 having a spinel structure. From this, it can be seen that the spinel structure is maintained even after NaBH 4 solution treatment.
한편, 도 2(c)에 따르면, NaBH4 용액의 처리 농도가 증가 할수록 산소가 많이 빠져나가게 되어 결정 격자가 무너지고 결정성이 낮아짐을 알 수 있다. 따라서, 규칙적인 결정성을 갖는 결정의 크기가 작아지게 됨을 알 수 있다.On the other hand, according to FIG. 2(c), as the treatment concentration of the NaBH 4 solution increases, a lot of oxygen escapes, and the crystal lattice collapses and crystallinity decreases. Accordingly, it can be seen that the size of the crystal having regular crystallinity is reduced.
The ratios of Co 2+ and Co 3+ of the catalysts for aqueous electrolysis of Examples and Comparative Examples were expressed as the ratio of the area of each peak to the total area of the Co peak based on the XPS analysis results, and the results are shown in FIG. 3 . As can be seen from FIG. 3 , as the concentration of NaBH 4 increases, the ratio of Co 2+ increases and the ratio of Co 3+ decreases. Through this, it can be seen that the oxygen porosity increases as the concentration of NaBH 4 increases.
실시예 및 비교예의 수전해전극용 촉매 표면의 전자 상태는 X 선 광전자 분광법(XPS)으로 분석하였으며, 그 결과를 도 3 및 도 4에 나타내었다.The electronic state of the catalyst surface for the aqueous electrolytic electrode of Examples and Comparative Examples was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results are shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 .
도 3a 및 도 4a 에서 보듯이, Co 및 O가 존재하고, 약 780eV와 795eV에서 Co 2p3/2와 2p1/2가 관찰되었으며, 이는 실시예 및 비교예의 수전해전극용 촉매 모두 스피넬 구조를 가진다는 것을 의미한다. As shown in FIGS. 3A and 4A , Co and O were present, and Co 2p 3/2 and 2p 1/2 were observed at about 780 eV and 795 eV. means to have
각 원소의 적분 면적과 상대 감도 인자(RSF)를 이용하여 Co의 XPS 스펙트럼으로부터 Co2+의 함량(%) 및 Co3+의 함량(%)을 계산하였으며, 그 결과를 도 5b에 나타내었다. The content (%) of Co 2+ and the content (%) of Co 3+ were calculated from the XPS spectrum of Co using the integral area of each element and the relative sensitivity factor (RSF), and the results are shown in FIG. 5B .
In addition, the oxygen porosity was calculated through the XPS analysis result. As shown in Figure 3a, the structure in which oxygen is bonded through fitting in the oxygen-related binding energy region (surface water (O W ), oxygen voids (O V ), surface OH (O OH ), and oxygen (O) constituting the lattice L )) can be known. The oxygen porosity can be confirmed by calculating the ratio of Ov in the total oxygen excluding water. 4b shows the oxygen porosity (%) and lattice oxygen content (%) of the electrode catalyst layers prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples.
도 4b로부터 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 전극촉매층의 산소 공극률은 약 45% 내지 약 53%임을 알 수 있다.It can be seen from FIG. 4b that the oxygen porosity of the electrode catalyst layer according to the embodiment of the present invention is about 45% to about 53%.
실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 수전해전극 촉매층의 BET 표면적을 촉매 표면에 N2를 흡착시켜 흡착량을 측정함으로써 재료의 비표면적을 계산하였으며, 그 결과를 도 7에 나타내었다. 도 5에서 보듯이 실시예의 경우 48 내지 50.3m3/g으로 비교예에 비하여 더 큰 BET 표면적을 가진다는 것을 알 수 있다.The specific surface area of the material was calculated by measuring the adsorption amount by adsorbing N2 on the catalyst surface for the BET surface area of the aqueous electrolytic catalyst layer prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples, and the results are shown in FIG. 7 . As shown in FIG. 5 , it can be seen that the Example has a larger BET surface area than that of the Comparative Example, from 48 to 50.3 m 3 /g.
음이온 교환막 수전해장치 (AEMWE) 시험Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer (AEMWE) Test
AEMWE consists of anode electrode (Co 3 O 4-x on nickel foam, 7.4 cm 2 ), cathode electrode (1 mg/cm 2 of Pt/C on nickel foam, 4.9 cm 2 ), gas diffusion layer (nickel foam) and membrane ( X37-50). 1M KOH was supplied to a single cell as an electrolyte at 25 mL/min, and the operating temperature was 45 °C. The AEMWE test was performed using a potentiostat (BP2C, ZIVE LAB). The electrochemical performance of AEMWE was analyzed with constant potential and LSV from 1.6 V to 1.9 V. Long-term testing of AEMWE was performed at 500 mA/cm 2 for 72 hours.
수전해전극의 과전압 측정 및 평가Measurement and evaluation of overvoltage of water electrolytic electrodes
Electrochemical measurements of the oxygen evolution reaction were performed with a potentiostat (VSP, biological). Electrochemical properties of electrodes including catalyst samples for water electrolysis electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples were performed in a three-electrode cell having 1M KOH electrolyte at room temperature. A Pt-mesh (3 cm x 4 cm) was used as a counter electrode, and mercury/silver oxide (1M KOH Hg/HgO) was used as a reference electrode. All potentials were converted to a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) using the Nernst equation (E RHE (V) = E Hg / HgO + 0.106 + 0.059 * pH). The value of 0.106V is the difference between the Hg/HgO (1M KOH) electrode and the RHE electrode under laboratory conditions. A 1M KOH solution was saturated with N 2 before OER testing for 1 h.
OER 활성은 linear sweep voltammetry (LSV)에 의해 5 mV/sec에서 측정하였다. 전기화학적 표면적(ECSA)은 1M KOH에서 비 패러데이 영역에서 상이한 스캔 속도 (5 내지 80mV/sec)에서 순환전압전류법을 사용하여 전기 화학적 이중층 커패시턴스로부터 계산되었다. OER activity was measured at 5 mV/sec by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The electrochemical surface area (ECSA) was calculated from the electrochemical double layer capacitance using cyclic voltammetry at different scan rates (5 to 80 mV/sec) in the non-Faraday region at 1 M KOH.
ECSA는 다음 방정식을 사용하여 계산되었다:ECSA was calculated using the following equation:
ECSA = Cdl/Cs ECSA = C dl /C s
여기서, Cs 값은 금속 표면에 대한 평활한 표면 커패시턴스를 의미하며, 40uF / cm2이다. Here, the C s value means the smooth surface capacitance for the metal surface, and is 40 uF/cm 2 .
실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 수전해전극의 전기화학적 거동은 알칼리성 매질에서 LSV 곡선에 의해 조사되었으며, 그 결과를 도 6에 나타내었다. 도 6에서 보듯이, 실시예의 전극은 비교예 전극에 비해 우수함을 알 수 있다. The electrochemical behavior of the water electrolytic electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples was investigated by LSV curves in an alkaline medium, and the results are shown in FIG. 6 . As shown in FIG. 6 , it can be seen that the electrode of the example is superior to the electrode of the comparative example.
실시예 및 비교예 전극 의 경우, OER의 개시 전위는 실시예는 1.470 V ~ 1.477 V 에서 관찰되었고, 비교예는 1.481 V에서 관찰되었다. 이로부터 산소 공극이 OER의 개시전위를 낮춰주는 역할을 함을 알 수 있다.For the electrode of Example and Comparative Example, the onset potential of OER was observed at 1.470 V to 1.477 V for Example, and 1.481 V for Comparative Example. From this, it can be seen that oxygen vacancies play a role in lowering the onset potential of OER.
성능의 더 명확한 비교를 위해, 타펠 기울기와 10 mA/cm2에서의 과전압을 도 9에 나타냈다. 도 9는 실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 전극의 과전압 및 타펠 기울기를 나타낸 그래프이다.For a clearer comparison of the performance, the Tafel slope and the overvoltage at 10 mA/cm 2 are shown in FIG. 9 . 9 is a graph showing the overvoltage and Tafel slope of the electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples.
도 9의 과전압 그래프로부터 실시예의 전극의 과전압은 비교예보다 낮음을 알 수 있다. 또한, 실시예의 전극의 타펠 기울기는 대략 51 내지 54 mV/dec이었다. It can be seen from the overvoltage graph of FIG. 9 that the overvoltage of the electrode of the example is lower than that of the comparative example. In addition, the Tafel slope of the electrode of the example was approximately 51 to 54 mV/dec.
한편, 전극의 전하전달저항(Rct, charge transfer resistance)을 시험하기 위해 전하전달저항을 임피던스분광법(EIS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) 방법으로 측정하였다. 도 8은 실시예 및 비교예에서 제조한 전극의 저항에 따른 EIS 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.Meanwhile, to test the charge transfer resistance (R ct ) of the electrode, the charge transfer resistance was measured by an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method. 8 is a graph showing the EIS results according to the resistance of the electrodes prepared in Examples and Comparative Examples.
도 8에서 보듯이, 300 mM 에서 처리한 촉매가 가장 낮은 전하 전달 저항(charge transfer resistance) 값을 보여주고, 이는 높은 산소발생활성의 증거로 볼 수 있다. As shown in FIG. 8 , the catalyst treated at 300 mM showed the lowest value of charge transfer resistance, which can be seen as evidence of high oxygenation activity.
실시예 1 의 Co 산화물 전극 및 산소 공극이 형성된 Co 산화물 전극의 총 과전압 (ηtotal)을 오믹 과전압 (ηohm), 운동 과전압 (ηkin) 및 물질 전달 과전압 (ηmass)으로 나타내었으며, 그 결과를 도 9에 나타내었다. The total overvoltage (η total ) of the Co oxide electrode and the Co oxide electrode with oxygen voids of Example 1 was expressed as an ohmic overvoltage (η ohm ), a kinetic overvoltage (η kin ), and a mass transfer overvoltage (η mass ). is shown in FIG. 9 .
도 9에서 보듯이, 단위셀 성능 평가 결과, 수소가 많이 생성되는 전류밀도가 증가할수록 물질 전달 과전압이 높아지는 것을 알 수 있다. 특히, 300mM 촉매가 pristine 촉매보다 낮은 물질 전달 과전압 값을 보이는데 이는 표면처리에 의한 표면 산소 공극의 형성과 표면의 친수성에 의한 발생된 산소의 신속한 제거에 기인한 것으로 보인다.As shown in FIG. 9 , as a result of the unit cell performance evaluation, it can be seen that the mass transfer overvoltage increases as the current density at which a lot of hydrogen is generated increases. In particular, the 300mM catalyst shows a lower mass transfer overpotential than the pristine catalyst, which seems to be due to the formation of surface oxygen voids by surface treatment and the rapid removal of oxygen generated by the hydrophilicity of the surface.
For the durability test of the water electrolysis cell, a high current density of 500 mA/cm 2 , which is a current density evaluated in an actual commercial model, was applied for 48 hours, each including the Co oxide electrode of Example 1 and the Co oxide electrode with oxygen voids formed in a single It was applied to the cell, and the cell potential over time is shown in FIG. 10 . When the initial current density was applied, the difference in cell voltage between the two catalysts was not large, but as the voltage rapidly increased in the cell to which the pristine catalyst was applied over time, the hydrogen generation efficiency decreased. Even when applied to an actual cell, it showed high durability to maintain high cell efficiency by maintaining catalytic properties.
