The present invention comprises the steps of: preparing a coating solution having a pH of 6 to 7 in which a water absorbent resin made of an acrylic emulsion polymer containing 30 wt% or more of (meth)acrylic acid polymerization units is dispersed in a dispersion medium; and
It provides a method for producing absorptive glass fibers for optical cables comprising the step of immersing the glass fibers in the coating solution and drying them.
First, according to the production method of the present invention, a coating solution having a pH of 6 to 7 in which a water-absorbing resin made of an acrylic emulsion polymer containing 30 wt% or more of (meth)acrylic acid polymer units is dispersed in a dispersion medium is prepared.
As described above, the absorbent coating layer formed on the surface of the glass fiber reinforcement requires high adhesion to the glass fiber. Here, the term (meth)acrylic acid should be interpreted as meaning including both acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.
In the coating solution, the (meth)acrylic acid polymerization unit may be derived from at least one of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.
In addition, the acrylic emulsion polymer may further include a polymerization unit derived from an alkyl (meth)acrylate having 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Here, the term (meth)acrylate should be interpreted as meaning including both acrylate and methacrylate.
It is particularly preferable that the acrylic emulsion polymer consists of polymerized units derived from 3 to 7 wt% of acrylic acid, 25 to 40 wt% of methacrylic acid and the remainder of ethyl acrylate.
The (meth)acrylic acid polymer unit contained in the acrylic emulsion polymer exhibits water absorption due to the carboxyl group contained therein. As the pH of the acrylic emulsion polymer increases, the hydrogen ions of the carboxyl group are dissociated and the chains are spread by the electrostatic repulsion between the chains, so that the absorbency becomes better. Accordingly, in the present invention, by adjusting the pH of the coating solution to 6 to 7, a coating layer with improved absorbency during coating and drying of the coating solution containing the water-absorbing resin made of the acrylic emulsion polymer was formed.
In the coating solution, the content of the acrylic emulsion polymer is preferably 4 to 12% by weight based on the total weight of the absorbent coating solution in consideration of the ease of coating and the absorbency of the coating layer to be formed.
Then, the glass fiber is immersed in the prepared coating solution and dried to form an absorbent coating layer on the surface of the glass fiber.
The water-absorbent glass fiber having the coating layer prepared in this way has good adhesion between the glass fiber and the coating layer, and has excellent moisture absorption.
By disposing the absorbent glass fiber prepared in this way to surround the optical fiber core, an optical cable capable of protecting the optical fiber core from moisture introduced from the outside can be manufactured.
Hereinafter, examples will be given to describe the present invention in detail. The weight (Wc) of the glass fiber with the coating layer was measured, and the weight (Wa) of the glass fiber with the coating layer absorbing water after immersing it in distilled water for 3 minutes and then removing the moisture residue for 2 minutes was measured. The water absorption of the coating layer was calculated according to Equation (1) below, and the results are graphically shown in FIG. 4 .
(Wa-Wc)/(Wc-W0)*100(%)Formula (1): Water absorption = (Wa-Wc)/(Wc-W0)*100(%)
Referring to FIG. 4 , it can be seen that the absorbent glass fibers manufactured according to the embodiments of the present invention have excellent moisture absorption.
