Blood vessels are the lifeline that nourishes the 60 shell cells of our body. In order to maintain human life, it is necessary to flow the blood released by the heartbeat along the arteries without clogging the body, and to return the blood back to the heart through the vein. This allows oxygen and nutrients to be supplied to each tissue in the body and metabolism can be used to remove the spent waste. In this way, vascular health is directly related to our health, and wrong management of blood vessels can cause serious diseases.
But recently, our blood vessels are getting clogged with Westernized eating habits, stress, obesity, lack of exercise, overeating, drinking, smoking and various environmental pollutants.
When fat, blood clots, plaques, etc. are accumulated on the inner wall of the blood vessels, they cause inflammation, accumulation of inflammatory substances, accumulation, and tightening of the blood vessel walls. When blood vessels are piled up in accumulation on the wall of blood vessels, blood and oxygen supply failure occur and various vascular diseases appear. For example, typical vascular diseases include angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, stroke, and lower limb arterial occlusion. In particular, failure to provide sufficient blood and oxygen to the heart and brain, which are key to maintaining life, can lead to paralysis or sudden death.
Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, not only in Korea. Such vascular disease progresses silently, and there is no special awareness symptom until the abnormal clogging, so that it becomes irreversible if neglected. Therefore, it is important to diagnose and prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease and the risk factors of arteriosclerosis that cause it, even if there is no subjective symptom.
Methods for diagnosing cardiovascular conditions and atherosclerosis can be divided into invasive and non-invasive methods. Invasive methods include angiography, catheter technique, and intra-arterial micro-ultrasound imaging, in which contrast media is injected into the blood vessels.
Non-invasive methods include but are not limited to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT), imaging using ultrasound, pulse wave velocity (PWV) And an augmentation index (AI) measurement method that shows the change in the pulse pressure magnitude due to the pulse wave. Recently, it has been widely used for the diagnosis of the vascular condition by using the noninvasive method.
Pulse is a graph of the wavelength at which blood circulates in the heart. The pulse wave propagation time means the time taken for the pulse wave to move between the two artery pulses, and the pulse wave propagation velocity can be obtained by dividing the blood vessel length between two points for detecting the pulse wave by the propagated time difference. When the arterial blood vessels become hard, the pulse wave transmission rate becomes larger, and thus it is used as a quantitative index of atherosclerosis.
