Abstract
The condenser heat exchanger includes a housing that provides a gas stream flow path and a bottom wall. The gas stream contains acid. The housing has a fluid inlet configured to introduce a liquid, such as water. The coolant tube is disposed in the gas stream flow path inside the housing and provides the coolant flow path. Acid condenses on the coolant tube and falls from the coolant tube to the collection zone provided in the bottom wall near the coolant tube. The collection zone is configured to maintain a predetermined amount of fluid containing a liquid that dilutes the condensed acid.
Description
The present invention relates to acid fuel cells, such as phosphoric acid electrolyte fuel cells, and more particularly to condenser heat exchangers used in acid fuel cells.
One type of acid fuel cell uses a phosphate electrolyte. Typically, condensers are used in conjunction with phosphoric acid fuel cells to condense and remove water from gas streams, such as anode or cathode emissions. One type of condenser heat exchanger uses multiple tubes that are supported in multiple fins. Coolant condenses water from the gas stream that flows through the tubes and flows between the fins. Water vapor in the gas stream contains small amounts of phosphoric acid. Heat transfer fins in the upstream portion of the condenser heat exchanger are noticeably corroded due to acid condensation on the fins. The fin edge temperature is much higher than the temperature of the coolant due to the thermal resistance through the fin. As a result, the fin edge temperature is typically higher than the dew point of the water but lower than the dew point of the acid, resulting in strong acid condensation that increases corrosion on the fin.
Corrosion products must be removed during the repair procedure to prevent pins from clogging and to prevent corrosion of the condenser. Corrosion products can prevent the gas stream from flowing through the condenser heat exchanger. Corrosion resistant metals such as stainless steel and HASTELLOY have been used in fins and tubes. The use of corrosion resistant metals could not extend the repair interval for removing corrosion products from the condenser heat exchanger to the desired duration of 10 years or more.
