Abstract
BACKGROUND ART In a liquid crystal display device, a glass substrate is traditionally used as a substrate of an array substrate and a color filter substrate. This is because the glass substrate is excellent in heat resistance and chemical resistance, and also excellent in transparency, so that the substrate itself is not deformed or discolored even by a high temperature process and chemical treatment. However, the glass substrate having such characteristics is expensive, there is a problem that the breakage or breakage easily occurs during the manufacturing process, there is a problem such as easily broken by the impact from the outside even after commercialization. Therefore, as a substitute for the glass substrate, a plastic substrate having a lower cost and flexibility than the glass substrate has been proposed. However, due to the manufacturing characteristics of the liquid crystal display device, there are many processes requiring a high temperature of 200 ° C. or higher. There are many difficulties in commercialization.

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly, to a liquid crystal panel using a plastic substrate and a manufacturing method thereof.
In recent years, as the society enters the information age, the display field for processing and displaying a large amount of information has been rapidly developed. In recent years, the thin film transistors having excellent performance of thinning, light weight, and low power consumption have recently been developed. Thin Film Transistor (TFT) type liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) has been developed to replace the existing cathode ray tube (CRT).
The image realization principle of the liquid crystal display device uses the optical anisotropy and polarization property of the liquid crystal. As is well known, the liquid crystal has a thin and long molecular structure and optical anisotropy having an orientation in an array, and when placed in an electric field, the liquid crystal has an orientation of molecular arrangement depending on its size. This change is polarized. The liquid crystal display is an essential component of a liquid crystal panel formed by bonding an array substrate and a color filter substrate formed with pixel electrodes and common electrodes facing each other with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween. In addition, it is a non-light emitting device which artificially adjusts the arrangement direction of liquid crystal molecules through the electric field change between these electrodes and displays various images by using the light transmittance which is changed at this time.
Recently, the active matrix type, in which pixels, which are the basic units of image expression, are arranged in a matrix manner, and switching elements are arranged in each pixel, is independently noticed for its excellent resolution and video performance. In addition, thin film transistors (TFTs) are well known as TFT-LCDs (Thin Firm Transistor Liquid Crystal Display Devices).
As shown in FIG. 1, which is an exploded perspective view of a general liquid crystal display, the
In addition, the upper
Meanwhile, in the liquid crystal display device, glass substrates are traditionally used for the first and second
However, the glass substrate having such characteristics is expensive, there is a problem that the breakage or breakage easily occurs during the manufacturing process, there is a problem such as easily broken by the impact from the outside even after commercialization.
In addition, recently, as portable portable devices such as laptops and PDAs are widely used, the emphasis on portability has become a trend of light weight and thinness.
Here, a brief description will be given of a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device using a conventional glass substrate.
The liquid crystal display device is largely divided into an array process of manufacturing an array substrate, a color filter process of manufacturing a color filter substrate, and a cell process of interposing liquid crystals between the two substrates using the two substrates and then bonding them together.
The array process forms a plurality of gate wirings and data wirings crossing each other on a transparent glass substrate, and forming a thin film transistor connected to the two wirings and a pixel electrode connected to the thin film transistor in a pixel region defined by the crossing of the two wirings. The process is done. In this case, forming the thin film transistor requires a high temperature of 200 ° C. or more in the process of depositing and patterning a metal material, an inorganic insulating material, or a semiconductor material.
In the color filter process, a black matrix having an opening corresponding to a pixel region is formed on a transparent glass substrate, a red, green, and blue color filter pattern is sequentially formed in the opening, and a common electrode is formed thereon. The process takes place.
In the color filter process, red, green, and blue resists are used, and a high temperature is required for hard bake after applying the respective resists to a substrate.
The liquid crystal display device is completed by performing a cell process on the array substrate and the color filter substrate completed by the array process and the color filter process as described above.
2 is a flowchart illustrating a cell process of forming a liquid crystal panel.
As shown, the first step of the cell process is an alignment process step st1 for forming an alignment film on the array substrate and the color filter substrate.
The alignment film is printed on the array substrate and the color filter substrate (st1-1), and the printed alignment film is cured by exposing the printed alignment film to an atmosphere of 230 ° C. or more for several minutes to several minutes (st1-2) to have a uniform arrangement on the cured alignment film. In order to perform this, rubbing (st1-3) is performed.
Next, in the second step, a gap process step st2 of forming the panel and the color filter substrate on which the alignment layer is formed is performed.
세부적으로 어레이 기판에는 상하의 두 기판을 도통시키기 위한 은 도포와 두 기판 간 갭을 유기시키기 위한 스페이서 산포가 이루어지고, 컬러필터 기판에는 두 기판을 접착시키기 위한 씰 패턴을 형성하게 된다.(st2-1)In detail, the array substrate is formed with silver coating for conducting the upper and lower substrates and spacers for inducing gaps between the two substrates, and a seal pattern for adhering the two substrates is formed on the color filter substrate (st2-1). )
Thereafter, the array substrate and the color filter substrate are bonded to each other while applying a predetermined pressure and heat while facing each other. At this time, two substrates form one panel by curing the seal pattern.
Next, the third step is an injection step (st3) for injecting the liquid crystal into the panel.
Since a plurality of unit panels are formed in the aforementioned one panel, a cutting process (st3-1) for separating them into one unit panel is performed, and a liquid crystal is injected into each of the continuously cut unit panels (st3-2). Then, one liquid crystal panel is formed by going through the step (st3-3) of sealing the injection hole into which the liquid crystal is injected.
The completed liquid crystal panel completes one liquid crystal display device through a fourth step of the module process st4.
As described above, the manufacturing of the liquid crystal display device requires a high temperature, and thus there are many problems in manufacturing the liquid crystal display device using a plastic substrate.

3 is a cross-sectional view of a COT structure liquid crystal display device according to the present invention.
The structure of the CIO structure liquid crystal display device according to the present invention described above will be described in more detail.
The
In addition, the drain
The
The COT structure liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is characterized by being configured in a VA (vertical alignment) mode that can control the liquid crystal as a special slit type electrode between the upper and lower sides without forming an alignment layer. Thus, in the present invention, the liquid crystal display device having the COT structure operating in the VA mode does not perform the process of forming an alignment film requiring a high temperature process of 230 ° C. or higher on the second substrate on which the
Accordingly, in the COT structure liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the

As illustrated, a transparent conductive material is deposited on the entire surface of the
In this case, although not shown in the drawing, a barrier layer (not shown) may be further formed to compensate for the degree of warpage of the
Hereinafter, a manufacturing method of completing a COT structure liquid crystal display device using the plastic substrate according to the present invention using the first substrate and the second substrate completed as described above will be described.
FIG. 12 is a cell process flow chart illustrating completion of a liquid crystal display device having a COT structure according to the present invention by performing a cell process on a first substrate and a second substrate manufactured as described above.
As shown, the first step of the cell process according to the present invention is a gap process step (ST1) to combine the above-described first substrate and the second substrate to form a panel.
Conventionally, an alignment process is performed by printing an alignment film on the inner surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate, that is, the surfaces facing each other, and then exposing it at 230 ° C. for several minutes to several minutes to cure the alignment film and to rub the cured alignment film. However, since the COT structure liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is implemented in VA mode, the alignment layer is not required. Therefore, the alignment process does not proceed with both the upper substrate using the glass substrate and the lower substrate using the plastic substrate. Conduct.
Silver coating is applied to the first substrate on which the thin film transistor and the red, green, and blue color filter layers are formed (ST1-1), and at the same time, a seal pattern is formed on the second substrate manufactured using the plastic substrate (ST-1). After positioning the first and second substrates so that the pixel electrode and the transparent electrode face each other, the two substrates are bonded to each other by applying a predetermined pressure (ST1-2), and the ultraviolet (UV) is irradiated to the bonded two substrates (ST1- 3) to form a panel by curing the seal pattern.
The seal pattern is formed by dispensing the sealant to have a predetermined width and height along the edge of the substrate, more precisely, along the edge of one unit pattern, wherein the sealant generally has a thermosetting property. Although used, the present invention is characterized in that a seal pattern is formed of an ultraviolet (UV) curable sealant. Therefore, after bonding, the bonded panel can be formed by curing the seal pattern by irradiating ultraviolet (UV) light to the substrate. At this time, the panel has a constant gap is maintained by the patterned spacer provided on the first substrate.
Next, the second step is an injection step ST2 for injecting liquid crystal.
First, since the panel manufactured through the first step is composed of a plurality of unit panels therein, the panel is cut and separated into individual unit panels. This process is called cutting process (ST2-1). By performing the cutting process, the liquid crystal injection process (ST2-2) which separates into the unit panel and injects the liquid crystal into the separated unit panel is performed, and the liquid crystal injection hole into which the liquid crystal is injected (ST2-3) The liquid crystal panel is completed.
The unit liquid crystal panel is completed as a COT structure liquid crystal display device by performing a module process (ST3) for attaching a printed board circuit (PCB) and a backlight.
The liquid crystal display and the manufacturing method of the COT structure according to the present invention comprise an array and a color filter forming process requiring a high temperature of 200 ° C. or higher on a lower substrate using a glass substrate, and the upper substrate is less heat resistant and chemically resistant than a glass substrate. It is possible to reduce manufacturing costs by providing liquid crystal display autonomous using plastic substrates by forming only transparent electrodes using low temperature process using plastic substrates, and realize lightweight products by using light plastic substrates instead of heavy glass substrates. It is effective.
In addition, since the portion exposed to the outside becomes a plastic substrate when the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is installed in a portable computer or the like, it has an effect of improving durability due to external impact compared to a product equipped with a liquid crystal display device in which a conventional glass substrate is exposed. have.
