Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for purifying crude glycerin using a filtering technique.
Glycerin is used in more than 2,000 different uses, from general household products such as toothpaste and shampoo to cosmetics and medicines, and the demand is increasing steadily, and it is mainly a by-product when making fatty acids or fats from raw materials such as fat or vegetable oil. It has been produced by distillation to refine (natural glycerin) or synthesized some propylene as a raw material (synthetic glycerin).
Countries around the world are actively increasing the production of biodiesel as one of the new environmentally friendly energy sources to suppress the rise of fossil fuel prices due to the depletion of petroleum energy resources and the generation of carbon dioxide due to excessive use of fossil fuels. . Biodiesel is made by reacting glyceride-containing animal fats or vegetable oils with aliphatic alcohols such as methanol, and glycerin (propane-1,2,3-triol) as a by-product along with biodiesel (fatty acid methyl ester). Glycerin 1 is produced for
Typical biodiesel production reactions are transesterification reactions, which are typical equilibrium reactions, using excess alcohols in an equivalent ratio or more to increase the yield and increase the reaction rate, and use an alkali catalyst such as caustic soda to increase the reaction rate. At the end of the reaction the product is present in two phases: the biodiesel phase (fatty acid alkylester phase) and the glycerin phase.
Biodiesel production methods are well known and there are several other methods in addition to the above-mentioned representative methods of reacting animal fats and vegetable oils with aliphatic alcohols under alkali catalysts. Some examples are: first, animal fat and vegetable oils are reacted with aliphatic alcohols at high temperatures and pressures using an acid such as sulfuric acid; second, animal fats and vegetable oils are first hydrolyzed to form fatty acids. And the reaction of fatty acids with aliphatic alcohols under acidic catalysts. Third, the reaction of animal fats and vegetable oils with aliphatic alcohols using insoluble catalysts such as lanthanum oxide. Sodium methoxide is widely used as an alkali catalyst, and caustic soda and potassium hydroxide are also used. The reason why relatively expensive sodium methoxide is widely used is that a high yield can be obtained even when a small amount of water is present in the raw material. Animal fats or vegetable oils are hydrolyzed under acid catalysis such as sulfuric acid to make fatty acids, or reactions with alkalis such as potassium potassium hydroxide to make soaps are also well known. And intermediate products.
When animal fats and vegetable oils are reacted with aliphatic alcohols such as methanol under alkali catalysts to make biodiesel, alcohols are usually used in an equivalent ratio or higher to increase the reaction rate and yield, but the reaction system is a byproduct because the reaction does not go up to 100%. There is a small amount of unreacted oil or intermediate in the reaction. When the reaction is first completed, it is separated into a hydrophilic, high specific gravity glycerin layer and a hydrophobic biodiesel layer. The glycerin layer contains an extra alcohol and alkali catalyst, and unreacted oil and reaction intermediate (low molecular weight organic compound). And the like. On the other hand, traces of alcohol and catalyst present in the biodiesel layer are washed off with water, which is combined with the washed water and the glycerin layer and neutralized with an acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. This is commonly called crude glycerol. . Some biodiesel companies sell crude glycerin in this state as it is, but many companies have a process to recover the alcohol contained in the crude glycerin.
Crude glycerin, a large by-product of biodiesel production, can be used in fields such as food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and chemical synthesis through purification. As crude glycerin is produced as a by-product of biodiesel, efforts are being actively made to produce purified glycerin that is comparable to synthetic glycerin or natural purified glycerin, and is currently partly produced by distillation. However, distillation proceeds at high temperatures, which results in high energy costs and the presence of oligomers / polymers of glycerin. When acid catalysts are used in the trans esterification reaction, there are trace amounts of various ethers formed between alkylalcohols and glycerin.
Since glycerin promotes decomposition at about 150 ° C. or more in the presence of a metal component, it is pyrolyzed in a very small amount in the distillation process to produce pyrolysis products such as acrolein, allyl alcohol, and diethylene glycol, but present in trace amounts of purified glycerin. In particular, recently, a trace amount of diethylene glycol present in purified glycerin has been reported to have a fatal effect on the human body, and the US Food and Drug Administration has enacted a separate regulation (USP 30) to regulate it. High vacuum (pressure reduction to about 1 to 10 mm Hg) is required to successfully distill glycerin. Therefore, an expensive treatment apparatus is required in order to obtain a high quality product with high yield by the distillation method of glycerin purification.
On the other hand, distillation alone is difficult to completely separate the organic matter having a similar boiling point to the pigment component present in the trace glycerin. In order to separate the pigment components affecting the color of the final product, the first distilled glycerin has to go through the activated carbon and activated carbon filtration process, which has the disadvantage of increasing the initial capital investment. In addition, organic compounds with similar melting points cannot be completely separated, so they may remain in purified glycerin. Therefore, various attempts have been made to develop a new purification method that can compensate for the drawbacks of the distillation, but there are still no commercial successes. That is, a new purification method that can produce high-purity glycerin at low cost with low investment is required.
In addition, a representative process for producing fatty acids by hydrolyzing animal fats or vegetable oils is a colgate emery process continuously performed under high temperature and high pressure without a catalyst. In this case, crude glycerin may have some trace amounts of inorganic ions originally present in the raw material. And unreacted and reaction intermediates are present. In order to remove this unreacted material and reaction intermediate, there is an example of applying a ceramic micro-filtering process having a pore diameter of 0.5 to 2.0 µm (USP5527974, Henkel, 1996). It is suitable for the separation of organic compounds, but not for the removal of small organic compounds (eg pigments, pesticides, etc.) and ions.
Thus, the inventors of the present invention while studying a method for purifying crude glycerin more effectively, first to pass crude glycerin through the nano-filtering membrane, and subsequently pass the reverse osmosis membrane to effectively purify crude glycerin, and additionally passed through the membrane Later, it was found out that crude glycerin can be purified more effectively by further passing the ion exchange resin, thus completing the present invention.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a purification method capable of producing high purity glycerin at low production cost with low investment.
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention provides a mixture of crude glycerol (crude glycerol) and water by passing through a membrane filter consisting of one or more series of nano-filtering membrane separation module and one or more reverse osmosis membrane membrane separation module connected in series with the module Provided is a method for purifying crude glycerin to produce purified glycerin.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail.

The present invention provides a method for producing purified glycerin by removing various impurities including inorganic salts contained in crude glycerin.

In other words, by using a nano-filtering module, divalent or higher ions or low molecular weight organic compounds can be separated. On the other hand, the reverse osmosis membrane separation process also exhibits its function as a pressure difference, the pore size of the reverse osmosis membrane used is smaller, as well as divalent or more ions, as well as monovalent ions and organic compounds having a molecular weight of 200 or less can be separated. Representative glycerin purification process of the present invention is configured as follows.
1) Purification through the first nanofiltering module
As shown in Fig . 1 , crude glycerin Put into the first nano-filtering module to remove most of the non-glycerine organics (unreacted or reaction intermediates) and divalent ions and some of the monovalent ions that are present in 0-1% (w / w) in crude glycerin. do. In particular, since the organic substances stick to the nanofilters and contaminate the filter, there is a need to frequently clean the nanofilters. Therefore, the nanofilters used in the first nanofiltering module should be selected to be able to withstand the frequent cleaning process.
The nanofilter also acts as a guard filter. Guard filters work to remove contaminants that cause irreversible membrane contamination and to maintain them under severe chemical conditions during the membrane cleaning process. Common sources of contamination are oils, particulates, organics of greater molecular weight than the pore size of guard filters, pigments, and certain salts. Therefore, the guard filter increases the retention period of the membrane by protecting the nanofilter and reverse osmosis membrane from contaminants.
2) Purification through the second nano-filtering module (additional process)
The nano-filtering module removes only a very small amount of the pigment component and divalent ions.
3) Purification via third and fourth reverse osmosis membrane modules
The reverse osmosis membrane separation module completely removes trace amounts of divalent ions and completely removes monovalent ions and organic substances having a molecular weight of 200 or less (pigment components, pesticide components, etc.).
4) Additional Process (1): Ion Exchange Process (Polishing Process)
An ion exchange process may be introduced to the next step of the membrane separation process, which is used to completely separate a trace amount of monovalent ions that cannot be completely separated by the membrane separation process, and is also commonly referred to as a polishing process. The ion exchange process may be omitted according to the specifications of the product.
2)5) Additional Process (2): Glycerin Recovery Process (FIG. 2)
In the glycerin recovery step of recovering glycerin contained in the concentrate, the yield of the pharmaceutical purified glycerin can be made 99% (w / w) or more by recovering glycerin from the concentrate and re-injecting it to the membrane separation process. omit the recovering glycerol recovery process as shown in Figure 1 the glycerin included in the water and then transferred to an evaporator to remove the water may be for animal feed or fuel.
The membrane separation process of an embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIG. In Figure 1, I is nanofiltering, II is nanofiltering or reverse osmosis membrane, and III and IV are reverse osmosis membranes. The crude glycerin is first mixed with pure water and then fed to the nanofiltering module of I. The first nanofiltering module I filters crude glycerin (1) to produce retentate (3) and permeate (4). The retentate (3) is fed to a water evaporator, where water is removed to feed the concentrated glycerin (13) to animal feed / fuel glycerin. At this time, since a small amount of methanol is removed together with water, there is no problem in using it for animal feed. On the other hand, permeate (4) is fed to the second nanofiltration or first reverse osmosis membrane (II), which is filtered to form retenate (6) and permeate (7). retentate (6) is preceded by water evaporator together with retentate (3) of I, permeate (7) is fed to the first reverse osmosis membrane or second reverse osmosis membrane (III), which is filtered to retentate (5) and permeate (9) To form. The retentate (5) is then mixed with a small amount of pure water, leading to the II separator with the permeate (4) of the first nanofiltering (I). Permeate (9) is fed to the reverse osmosis membrane (IV), which is filtered to form retentate (8) and permeate (10). The retentate (8) leads to the III separator with the permeate of the II separator. The permeate (10) is fed directly to the water evaporator, or if the metal salt is not completely removed even after the membrane separation process, it is supplied to the water evaporator to remove the water and concentrated water after the metal salt is completely removed from the ion exchanger. Prepare glycerin.
FIG. 2 includes a glycerin recovery process for recovering glycerin contained in the concentrate obtained in the membrane separation process of FIG. 1 . The process of circulating the retentate and permeate separated in the separators II, III and IV and the process of circulating the permeate of the separator I are the same. The retentate (3) separated in Membrane I removes water and a small amount of residual methanol via a water evaporator and then passes through a wipe film evaporator where distillate (recovered glycerin) 14 from which water / organic and metal components are removed is removed. It is used as industrial glycerin or supplied to separator (II) together with permeate (4) of separator (I). The remainder of the wipe film evaporator (metal salt + glycerin) (15) is again mixed with methanol and then the metal salt is removed from the cetler (16) and the methanol is removed from the methanol evaporator (recovery glycerin) (17) It is combined with the distillate (recovery glycerin) 14 of the film film evaporator and used as industrial glycerin or fed to the separator (II) together with the permeate (4) of the separator (I).
In the process of Figure 1 of the present invention to adjust the ratio of the hourly flow rate of the concentrate and permeate that did not pass through the membrane in each unit separation process in order to increase the purification efficiency of the membrane process to about 0.6 ~ 2: 10, the first nano The concentrated solution from the filtering module is combined with the concentrated solution from the second nanofiltering module and transferred to a water evaporator to remove water, and then used as it is for animal feed or fuel, or to recover glycerin by separating metal salts and organic matter contained therein. A recovery step may be introduced (FIG. 2). The concentrate from the third membrane separation module is then reintroduced into the second nanofiltering module.
In the purification method of the present invention, glycerin can be purified with high purity by removing divalent or higher metal ions or low molecular weight organic compounds in the nanofiltering process, and effectively removing monovalent ions and organic compounds having a molecular weight of 200 or less in the reverse osmosis membrane separation process. However, high-quality glycerin can be produced in a continuous and repeatable process with high yield with almost no loss, and unlike distillation, it does not produce diethylene glycol, which has a fatal effect on the human body during the process.

Will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art.
2<Example 1 to Example 3> Purification of
The typical composition of the flow fluid in each process stream was observed when the crude glycerin containing sodium sulfate or sodium sulfate and salt was purified with metal salts using a membrane process consisting of four unit membrane separation modules illustrated in FIG. 1.
Specifically, 100 kg of crude glycerin composition containing 4.13% (w / w) of sodium sulfate as a salt was added to the membrane separation module configured as shown in FIG. 1 per hour. In this case, the nanofilter used in the membrane separation module I was NF a1 in Table 5 and the permeate /
By the above purification method was obtained in a yield of 86% (w / w) or more compared to glycerin in the high purity pharmaceutical glycerin. Glycerin containing the metal salt and organic matter obtained as a concentrate can be used as a glycerin for animal feed or fuel as it is after removing only part of the water, or it can be re-introduced into the membrane process after combining with the crude glycerin after the glycerin recovery process. The test results were performed as shown in Table 2 (FIG. 2).
In this case, it was possible to obtain a yield of 99% (w / w) or more compared to glycerin injected with high purity pharmaceutical glycerin. In this case, when the industrial glycerin is to be produced, the product that has undergone the recovery process as shown in FIG. 2 may be commercialized as it is.
In addition, 100 kg of crude glycerin composition containing 2.1% (w / w) of salt and 2.04% (w / w) of sodium sulfate as a salt was added to the membrane separation module configured as shown in FIG. 1 per hour. The separator used for each separation module used at this time, the permeate / concentrate in each separation module, and the operating conditions were the same as in Example 1. Flow rate, glycerin content weight%, methanol weight%, water weight%, salt weight%, and organic weight% according to each separation module are shown in Table 3.
By the above purification method was obtained with a yield of 88% (w / w) or more compared to the glycerin in the high purity pharmaceutical glycerine. As in Example 1, the glycerin containing the metal salt and the organic material obtained from the concentrate may be used for animal feed or fuel as it is after removing only part of the water, or may be re-introduced into the membrane process after the glycerin recovery process. .
In addition, 100 kg of crude glycerin composition containing 6.4% (w / w) of salt was added to the membrane separation module configured as shown in FIG. 1 per hour. In this case, the nanofilter used in the membrane separation module I was NF a1 in Table 5, the permeate /
In the case of crude glycerin refining containing only salt as a metal salt, in order to enhance the separation and purification effect of the salt, unlike in Examples 1 and 2, the second separation membrane module in FIG. 1 was replaced with a reverse osmosis membrane separation module instead of the nanofiltration module. The yield of high purity pharmaceutical glycerin was 84.8% (w / w). As in Examples 1 and 2, the glycerin containing the metal salt and organic matter obtained from the concentrate may be used for animal feed or fuel as it is after removing only part of the water, or may be combined with crude glycerin again after the glycerin recovery process and re-introduced into the membrane process. have.
Thus, by appropriately combining the unit modules according to the type of metal salt can maximize the process efficiency, and by adjusting the number of unit modules used in various ways to produce purified glycerin of various purity from industrial to pharmaceutical have.
1> Comparative Example 1
The composition of glycerin purified by the membrane separation process of the present invention and the composition of pharmaceutical glycerin purified by a conventional distillation method (manufactured by P & G) were compared (Table 5). As shown in Table 5, it is possible to produce purified glycerin that meets the standards of the US Food and Drug Administration even with the traditional distillation method, but as described above, how can the purified glycerin of high purity be produced at a low production cost while reducing the initial investment cost? Is considered important. In order to distill glycerin, a high temperature of 240-260 ° C. and high vacuum (reduced pressure to about 1 to 10 mm Hg) are required, and an expensive treatment apparatus is required in order to obtain high yield by distillation of glycerin. In addition, distillation alone is difficult to completely separate the organic matter similar to the melting point of the pigment component present in the crude glycerin. On the other hand, glycerin is promoted decomposition at about 150 ℃ or more in the presence of a metal component, so that the pyrolysis of a trace amount in the distillation process to produce pyrolysis products such as acrolein, allyl alcohol, diethylene glycol, but a trace amount present in the purified glycerin. In particular, recently, a trace amount of diethylene glycol present in purified glycerin has been reported to have a fatal effect on the human body, and the US Food and Drug Administration has enacted a separate regulation (USP 30) to regulate it.
In general, the performance of the membrane may vary depending on the contact angle and material of the membrane, the pore size distribution, and the pore density. The separation performance of the membranes was tested along with the materials of the membranes and the contact angles measured by a Cruz contact angle measuring device (DSA 10). Separation performance of the membrane was determined using Alfa Laval's M20 tester at a temperature of 50 ° C. and a pressure of 500 psi. The crude glycerin (metal salt content 2-2.4% (w / w), organic matter content 0.3% (w / w), glycerol: Water = 1: 2-2: 3). In Table 5, NF is a nanofilter membrane, RO is a reverse osmosis membrane, PVDF is a polyvinylidene fluoride, PES is a polyester sulfone, CA is a cellulose acetate, PA is a polyamide, and LMH: liter / square meter, hour (Hour) Indicates.
As a result, the contact angle and the separation performance of the separator do not show a great correlation, but show a difference depending on the product. The contact angle of the separator does not affect the separation properties because the wettable glycerin hydrophilizes the membrane surface. The difference in separation performance by product seems to be due to the difference in material and pore size distribution and pore density.
Separation membranes applicable to the present invention should basically have a high permeation rate per unit time, and in particular, the nanofilters used in the first membrane module are well suited for frequent cleaning such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyester sulfone (PES). Among the tough materials that can withstand the excellent separation performance of organic substances and pigment components, the second nano-filter used in the membrane module is good separation performance of divalent ions and pigment components, the reverse osmosis membrane is monovalent ions and It is good that the separation performance of divalent ion is excellent. Therefore, from the results of this test, (1) the nanofilters used in the first nanofiltering module were made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyestersulfone (PES), or polyimide (PI) which can withstand frequent cleaning. (2) Nanofilters used in the second and subsequent nanofiltering modules, made of polyamide, having no float in the permeate, light yellow or colorless, and rejection rate of sodium sulfate 60% (w / w) or more, and the hourly permeation rate (LMH) is 2.0 or more, and (3) The membrane material used for the reverse osmosis membrane module is cellulose acetate-based and has a salt rejection rate of 40% (w / w) or more and sodium sulfate. The rejection rate is 50% (w / w) or more, and the hourly permeation amount (LMH) of 1.2 or more is selected and applied to the glycerin purification process of the present invention is effective and economical A method for purifying glycerin could be established.
