Abstract
Description
본 발명은 선택 전극들, 또는 행(row) 전극들과, 데이터 전극들, 또는 열 전극들과, 선택 전극들과 데이터 전극들을 구동하기 위한 구동수단의 매트릭스 영역에서 하나 이상의 스위칭 소자와 화소를 포함하는 액정 디스플레이 장치에 대한 것이다.
액티브 매트릭스 디스플레이 장치의 예로는 비디오 용도 또는 디지털 모니터로 사용되는 TFT-LCD 또는 AM-LCD가 있다.
이러한 디스플레이 장치의 문제점은 잔상(motion blur)과 같은 움직임에 의한 허상(motion artefact)이 발생하는 것이다. 이미지 내의 움직임은 액정 재료가 구동 전류들에 의해 정해지는 주어진 최종 상태에 도달하기 위한 최소 시간을 필요로 하기 때문에 희미하게 표시되며, 이는 보는 사람을 답답하게 한다. 이는 프레임 주기(frame period) 내에서, 전체 이미지가 먼저 어드레스(address)된 후에, 광원이 짧고 강한 광 펄스를 방출하게 되는, 펄스 백라이트 시스템을 사용하여 실제로 제거된다.
그러나, 이 경우에 첫 번째 라인으로서 어드레스되는 화상 라인(picture line)과 관련한 화소들이 뒷 단계에서 처리되는 화상 라인들보다 안정적인 최종 상 태에 도달하는데 더 긴 시간이 걸린다는 문제가 발생한다. 이는 첫 번째 라인으로서 어드레스된 화상 라인으로부터 마지막 라인으로서 어드레스되는 화상 라인을 향해 화상의 질이 감소되게 한다.
본 발명의 목적은 잔상과 같은 움직임에 의한 허상이 발생하지 않거나 또는 거의 발생하지 않는 서두에서 설명한 타입의 디스플레이 장치를 제공하는 것이다.
이를 위해, 본 발명에 따른 디스플레이 장치는 펄스 백라이트 시스템과, 작동 중에 화소들을 선택하는 시퀀스(sequence)에서 화소들을 스위칭하는 속도를 증가시키는 부가의 수단을 포함한다.
본 발명은 뒷 단계에서 구동되는 화소의 행들이 전 단계에서 구동되는 화소의 행들보다 높은 스위칭 속도를 갖게 하면 일종의 점진적인 보상이 일어나 상기 잔상이 상당히 감소된다는 인식에 근거한다.
이는 예를 들어 신호 처리기를 사용하여 화소들의 행들을 구동하는 시퀀스에서 화소들에 걸쳐 (예를 들어, 데이터 전압들에 의하여) (가능한) 구동 전압들의 범위를 증가시켜("오버드라이브(overdrive)"의 증가) 이루어질 수 있다. 화상 메모리와 별개의 회로가 이를 위해 통상적으로 필요하다.
양호한 실시예에서, 화소의 화상 전극은 다른 전극에 용량적으로 커플링되고, 다른 수단은 용량성 커플링을 통해 화소들에 걸친 가능한 구동 전압들의 범위를 증가시키는 구동 수단을 포함한다.
이 응용예에서, "용량적으로 커플링된다"는 것은 예를 들어, 한 행과 관련한 화상 전극과 이후(또는 앞) 행의 전극(선택 전극)의 일부가 (부분적으로) 중첩하게 하여, (보조) 커패시턴스(capacitance)(보조 커패시터)를 통해 커플링됨을 의미한다. "오버드라이브"의 (증가)는 보조 커패시터들을 통해 이루어진다.
예를 들어, 화소들의 행에 데이터를 제공하기 직전 또는 직후에 이러한 화소들의 행과 관련한 커패시턴스에, 위치에 따라 변하는 전압을 제공하여, 화상 전극들에 걸친 구동 전압의 범위가 이제 증가될 수 있다. 그러나, 이는 추가로 연결(최대 행의 개수와 같은 개수)할 것을 필요로 한다. 다르게는, 화소들의 행에 관련한 커패시턴스의 카운터 플레이트에 걸친 전압 기울기를 제공할 수 있다.

도 1은 본 발명이 적용되는 디스플레이 장치(1)의 일부의 등가 전기회로이다. 이는 행 또는 선택 전극(17)들과, 열 또는 데이터 전극(6)들이 교차하는 영역에서 화소(18)들의 매트릭스를 포함한다. 행 전극 1 내지 m은 행 구동기(16; row driver)에 의해 연속적으로 선택되고, 열 전극들 1 내지 n은 데이터 레지스터(5; data register)를 통해 데이터를 공급받는다. 이를 위해, 들어오는 데이터(8)가 우선, 필요하다면 프로세서(10)에서 처리된다. 행 구동기(16)와 데이터 레지스터(5) 간의 상호 동기화(mutual synchronization)가 구동 라인(7)을 통해 이루어진다.

서두에서 상술한 바와 같이, 펄스 백라이트 시스템이 사용될 때 전체 화상이 먼저 소정의 프레임 주기 내에 어드레스되고, 마지막 화상 라인이 어드레스된 후에, 짧고 강한 광 펄스가 광원(도시되지 않음)에 의해 방출된다.

비록 (보조) 커패시터(23)가 본 실시예에서 화살표(2) 방향에서 커패시턴스가 증가되지만, 이들은 커패시턴스가 감소되면서, 접속선(4)들에 인가될 수 있는 전압값들의 범위가 동시에 증가될 수 있다.

- 디스플레이 장치에 있어서,선택 전극들 및 데이터 전극들의 매트릭스가 교차하는 영역에 위치하는 하나의 화소와 하나 이상의 스위칭 소자;상기 선택 전극들을 구동하고 상기 데이터 전극들을 구동하기 위한 제 1 구동 수단; 및펄스 백라이트 시스템을 포함하며,상기 디스플레이 장치는 작동 중에 화소들을 선택하는 시퀀스로 상기 화소들의 스위칭 속도를 증가시키는 추가 수단을 포함하며,상기 추가 수단은 화소의 화상 전극과 추가 전극에 용량적으로 커플링된 보조 커패시터 및 용량성 커플링을 통해 상기 화소들에 걸친 가능한 구동 전압 범위를 증가시키는 제 2 구동 수단을 포함하는, 디스플레이 장치.
- 제 3 항에 있어서,상기 제 2 구동 수단은 병렬된 선택 전극과의 용량성 커플링을 통해 화소들 간에 걸친 구동 전압들을 가하는, 디스플레이 장치.
- 제 3 항 또는 제 4 항에 있어서,저장 커패시터(storage capacitor)들의 커패시턴스들이 상기 화소들을 선택하는 시퀀스로 증가하는, 디스플레이 장치.
- 제 3 항 또는 제 4 항에 있어서,저장 커패시터의 커패시턴스들이 상기 화소들을 선택하는 시퀀스로 감소하는, 디스플레이 장치.
