BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a flat panel display, and more particularly, to a flat panel display having a photo sensor on a substrate for sensing external illumination.
The flat panel display may be a liquid crystal display (LCD), a field emission display (FED), a plasma display panel (PDP), an organic light emitting diode display (Organic Light Emitting Diode display); OELD) and the like, and are classified into an active matrix (AM) and a passive matrix (PM) according to the driving method. The active driving method includes a thin film transistor (TFT), and a photo sensor is formed on the same substrate as the thin film transistor or outside the substrate to detect external light irradiation, and at this time, the external luminance controller With the implementation of ABC (Auto Brightness Control), which automatically adjusts the brightness of flat panel display devices, the brightness of the flat panel display device is reduced when the external environment is dark, and the brightness of the flat display device is increased by adjusting the brightness to the most suitable brightness. It is possible to improve the power consumption and lifespan.
In general, a photo sensor is used as a photo diode and a photo transistor. The photo diode is formed by a junction of a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor. Electron-hole pairs (EHP) are generated by energy, and holes move to P-type and electrons move to N-type by the depletion layer electric field of the semiconductor. As a result, holes are accumulated in the P-type and electrons are accumulated in the N-type, and photovoltaic power is generated. Accordingly, a current can flow in the external circuit. The photodiode is a photo sensor using such a photovoltaic, in particular, has a fast response speed, and has a simple structure.
The phototransistor uses the same photovoltaic effect as the photodiode. The photodiode is a device that adds an amplifier capability to the photodiode to obtain a large output by amplifying the photocurrent generated. There are complex drawbacks.
As a technique known to this concept, a method of adjusting an output luminance of an organic light emitting display device by setting an appropriate luminance setting section according to external illumination is disclosed.
In addition, a method of controlling an output luminance of an organic light emitting display device using a photo transistor provided on a substrate is also known.
However, when the photo sensor is provided outside the substrate, there are problems such as an increase in the number of components and an increase in module volume. When the photo transistor is provided in the substrate, the structure becomes complicated, the area is increased, and the photoelectric effect is configured only by the electromotive force method. There is a disadvantage that the selectivity of the photoelectric conversion layer that is a light-receiving material that can be light.
Accordingly, the present invention is to solve the above problems of the prior art, by forming a photoelectric conversion layer between the electrode layer in the flat panel display substrate photoelectric emission type, photoconductive type, photovoltaic type according to the irradiation of external light energy The purpose of the present invention is to adjust the brightness of a flat panel display by an external brightness controller using the photocurrent generated by the photoelectric effect.

In Examples 1 to 3, the
First, the photoelectron emission effect is a phenomenon in which electrons are emitted from the surface to the outside when a constant light energy is irradiated to the surface of the material, and when the light energy is greater than the work function of the semiconductor, the electrons are emitted to the outside, in particular, Sb-C, It may be implemented with any one material of Cs-Te or GaAs,
Second, the photoconductive effect is a phenomenon in which the conductivity increases when light is irradiated onto the material. The conductivity increases and the photocurrent flows because electrons and holes, which are free carriers, are generated by receiving light energy in the material. In particular, it may be implemented with any one material of CdS, CdSe or a-Si.
Third, the photovoltaic effect is composed of a junction type structure. When light is irradiated to the depletion layer of the PN junction, electron hole pairs (EHP) are generated by a photoelectric effect phenomenon, and electrons move to the N region and holes move to the P region, Photovoltaic power is generated inside the semiconductor, and thus, a photocurrent flows. In particular, it may be implemented with any one of Si, a-Si, Ge, or GaAs / Ge.
The photo sensor may be positioned in a non-light emitting area other than the light emitting area in a predetermined shape on the organic light emitting display, and detects a change in external light to lower the brightness of self light emission when the external environment is dark by an external brightness controller. If it is bright, increase the brightness of self-luminescence to adjust to the appropriate brightness.
In addition, although the present embodiment has been described as a top gate structure, the bottom gate structure in which the gate electrode is disposed under the semiconductor layer may be similarly implemented.
Although the present invention has been shown and described with reference to preferred embodiments as described above, it is not limited to the above-described embodiments and those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the present invention. Various changes and modifications will be possible.
As described above, the flat panel display device of the present invention forms a photoelectric conversion layer positioned between the electrode layers in the non-light emitting region on the substrate, thereby enabling a reduction in the number of parts and the volume of the module, compared to when a photo sensor is provided outside the substrate. It can be formed in a small area with a simple structure compared to the photo transistor to be formed, and it is possible to implement a photo sensor having a high selectivity for various light wavelengths by using light-receiving materials of various photoelectric conversion layers.
