The present invention relates to a fuel reforming method, a reformer, and a fuel cell system for obtaining hydrogen gas from a hydrocarbon fuel, and in particular, a fuel reforming method and a reformer that are advantageous for miniaturization without requiring a separate heater or burner for supplying heat to the reformer. And a fuel cell system having the same.
In recent years, the use of portable small electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, notebook computers, electronic notebooks, etc. is increasing, and as a power source thereof, primary batteries such as alkaline batteries or secondary batteries such as lithium ion batteries are used. In particular, as portable miniature electronic devices become smaller and more versatile, improvement in power supply performance is required.
Secondary batteries such as lithium ions, which are generally used as power supply devices for portable information devices, are required to effectively use energy and further improve their capacity. However, in order to fundamentally solve the demand for a high capacity and high efficiency power supply device, it is necessary to develop a small high capacity fuel cell that can replace a lithium ion battery.
A fuel cell is an energy converter that obtains electrical energy from chemical energy by electrochemically reacting fuel and oxygen, and is promising as a high capacity battery. Hydrogen itself can be considered as a fuel used in a fuel cell system. However, hydrocarbon-based compounds such as methanol can usually be used as a fuel due to problems in handling and storage of hydrogen gas.
Hydrocarbon-based compounds can be used directly in fuel cells (direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC)) or can be converted to mixed gas containing hydrogen by reforming reaction and the hydrogen can be supplied to the fuel cell (reforming Hydrogen Fuel Cell: Reformed Hydrogen Fuel Cell (RHFC). Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have lower output energy densities than polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs) that use hydrogen, making it difficult to obtain sufficient capacity in small fuel cell system sizes. The reformed hydrogen fuel cell (RHFC) has advantages such as high output and high power capacity per unit volume, but it is considered to be disadvantageous in miniaturization of a fuel cell system because it requires a separate reformer.
1 is a view showing a schematic configuration of a conventional fuel cell system. Referring to FIG. 1, the
As the reformed gas from the reformer 1 passes through the CO removal unit 2, carbon monoxide (CO) in the reformed gas is removed. After passing through the CO removal unit 2, the reformed gas is introduced into the
Since the steam reforming reaction is an endothermic reaction at a temperature of 200 ° C. or higher, heat must be supplied to the reformer 1 from the outside (burner or electric heater or the like). In addition, since CO gas that degrades the performance of the
In addition to electric heaters and exhaust burners, a catalytic burner or combustor has been proposed to supply heat for the reforming reaction. A catalytic combustor can be installed in the reformer, which burns methanol and oxygen to generate heat and supplies this heat to the reformer. However, since such a catalytic combustor must be supplied with oxygen (or air) and consume methanol, an additional compressor for oxygen (or air) supply is required, control of the battery system is difficult, and energy efficiency is not high.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to enable the reforming reaction without a separate external heat source such as a combustor, a burner, and an electric heater, which is advantageous for miniaturization of a fuel cell system and suitable for high energy efficiency and high capacity To provide a reformer.

The supplied liquid methanol and hydrogen peroxide react by the hydrogen peroxide reforming reaction of Scheme 1 below to generate hydrogen, water (H 2 O), and heat (exothermic reaction).
The reforming reaction of hydrogen peroxide (Scheme 1) may be performed using an
The
The steam reforming reaction can be carried out using a steam reforming catalyst, in particular Cu / ZnO / Al 2 O 3 -based catalyst. The heat required for the steam reforming reaction is provided from the heat generated in the
In the
Since the CO gas has a characteristic of degrading the performance of the fuel cell stack, a separate CO removal unit is usually installed in the fuel cell system to remove generated CO gas. However, when the
That is, since considerable hydrogen is already generated by the reforming reaction of hydrogen peroxide (see Scheme 1) in the
Furthermore, according to the
When using the
3 is a configuration diagram schematically showing a fuel cell system according to an embodiment of the present invention. Referring to FIG. 3, the
The
The
The
According to the
4 is a cross-sectional view schematically showing an example of the configuration of the
As the
5 is a schematic structural diagram of a fuel cell system according to another embodiment of the present invention. In the embodiment of FIG. 5, the
The
Referring to FIG. 5, a temperature sensor Tc2 such as a thermocouple is installed in the
6 is a schematic diagram illustrating examples of a fuel supply unit that may be used in the
As another alternative, as shown in Fig. 6 (b), the liquid hydrocarbon compound and the hydrogen peroxide may be contained in separate tanks. The hydrocarbon-based compound contained in the

The present inventors carried out the following comparative experiment to confirm the improvement of methanol conversion rate of the reformer according to the present invention and the saving effect of the fuel used.
(1) Modification Reaction of Example
The reforming reaction (modification reaction of hydrogen peroxide and steam reforming reaction) was performed using the
(2) Reforming reaction of the comparative example
As in the prior art, steam reforming of methanol was carried out using only a steam reforming reactor. A mixture of methanol and water (weight ratio of methanol to water = 1: 1) was used as fuel. In order to obtain a reformed gas flow rate of 185 ml / min as in the above example, a mixed fuel (methanol + water) had to be supplied at a flow rate of 0.32 ml / min. In this case, the methanol conversion rate is 70%, and about 60 ml of fuel is required to drive the fuel cell for about 3 hours.
From the experimental results, it can be seen that the embodiment has a methanol conversion rate of about 15% higher than that of the comparative example, and the fuel required for driving the fuel cell for the same time is also reduced. Therefore, it can be seen that the reformer according to the present invention is advantageous not only for simplifying and miniaturizing the fuel cell system but also for improving the efficiency of the reformer.
It is intended that the invention not be limited by the foregoing embodiments and the accompanying drawings, but rather by the claims appended hereto. In addition, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention may be substituted, modified, and changed in various forms without departing from the technical spirit of the present invention described in the claims.
As described above, according to the present invention, there is no need for an external heat source such as a heater for supplying heat to the reformer, and the amount of CO gas generated is small. Accordingly, it is advantageous for miniaturization and high capacity of the fuel cell system. In addition, the methanol conversion rate is further improved and fuel savings can be effectively implemented in a high efficiency fuel cell system.
