CONSTITUTION: A diesel engine comprises a cylinder block(2); a cylinder liner(20) mounted at the inner stepped surface of the cylinder block, which has a top surface disposed at the position same with the position of the top surface of the cylinder block; a piston(4) on which a combustion chamber(6) is formed, wherein the piston is rubbed against the inner surface of the cylinder liner and moves in a vertical direction so as to compress an air-fuel mixture; a cylinder head(8) having an injection nozzle(10) communicated to the combustion chamber, which is coupled with the cylinder block by a cylinder head gasket(12) disposed on the top surface of the cylinder block and certain part of the top surface of the cylinder liner; and a sub combustion chamber(30) formed by the top surface of the piston, inner surface and top surface of the cylinder liner, inner surface of the cylinder head gasket and the bottom surface of the cylinder head, wherein the sub combustion chamber is communicated to the combustion chamber of the piston.
