The present invention relates to a wave plate for converting polarization characteristics of a light beam, and more particularly, to a liquid crystal wave plate capable of changing polarization characteristics of a light beam regardless of a temperature change using a liquid crystal and an optical pickup apparatus using the same.
As a typical wave plate, a? / 4 plate that converts a linearly polarized light beam into a circularly polarized light beam or a circularly polarized light beam into a linearly polarized light beam is exemplified. To convert the polarization characteristics of the light beam, a wave plate (i.e., a lambda / 4 plate) is formed by a transparent crystalline material plate. The permeable crystalline material plate is disadvantageous in that the conversion characteristic of the light beam changes depending on the temperature. This is due to the fact that the thickness of the crystalline material plate is sensitive to temperature as well as the wavelength of the light beam. To overcome this problem, a wave plate formed by superimposing two transparent crystalline material plates has been proposed. However, although the wave plate composed of two transparent crystalline material plates provides improved change characteristics with respect to temperature change, it has a disadvantage that it is heavy in weight, difficult to manufacture, and expensive to manufacture.
Meanwhile, the optical pickup apparatus must irradiate the surface of the optical disc with a circularly polarized beam in order to prevent damage to the information recording surface of the optical disc when accessing the optical disc. Accordingly, the optical pickup apparatus uses a wave plate for converting a linearly polarized light beam emitted from the light source and irradiated onto the surface of the optical disk into a circularly polarized light beam. However, since the conventional optical pickup device uses a wave plate made of a crystalline material plate, it is difficult to reduce the weight and the manufacturing cost is increased.
For reference, the disadvantages of the conventional wave plate will be described in detail with reference to FIG. Referring to FIG. 1, there is shown a conventional wave plate in which first and second crystalline material plates 10, 12 are superimposed. The thickness d1 of the first crystalline material plate 10 is different from the thickness d2 of the second crystalline material plate 12. [ The relationship between the thicknesses d1 and d2 of the first and second crystal material plates 10 and 12 and the wavelength of the light beam is expressed by the following equations (1) and (2), respectively.
In Equation 1 and Equation 2, n is the refractive index difference (the refractive index of the extraordinary ray (n e ) - the refractive index of the phase ray (n 0 )), m is an integer, Is the wavelength. From the equations 1 and 2, the wavelength characteristics of the first and second crystal material plates 10 and 12 are
In Equation 3, m < RTI ID = 0.0 > Is not affected by the temperature change due to the deletion of the terms of
However, the conventional wave plate has a drawback that it has a very large weight due to the use of a dense crystalline material plate having a high density of molecules. In addition, the conventional wave plate has a complicated manufacturing process and a drawback that it is very complicated. This is because the manufacturing process of the wave plate is required not only to grow crystals and process the grown crystals to a desired thickness, but also to control the thickness of the crystal material plate to a desired size.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal wave plate which is light in weight and easy to manufacture.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an optical pickup apparatus using a liquid crystal wave plate which is light in weight and can minimize manufacturing cost.
In order to achieve the above object, a liquid crystal wavelength plate according to the present invention comprises first to third transparent substrates through which light beams are transmitted, first and second transparent substrates which are positioned between the first and second transparent substrates and which are rubbed to be perpendicular to the optical axis of the light beam A first liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules and a second liquid crystal layer disposed between the second and third transparent substrates and composed of the optical axis of the light beam and the second liquid crystal molecules rubbed to be perpendicular to the rubbing direction of the first liquid crystal molecules Respectively.
An optical pickup apparatus according to the present invention comprises a light source for generating a light beam to be irradiated on a surface of an optical disc, an objective lens for connecting a light beam from the light source to the surface of the optical disc, And a liquid crystal wave plate which is disposed between the light source and the objective lens and converts a polarization characteristic of a light beam traveling from the light source to the objective lens.

Referring to FIG. 2, a first liquid crystal layer 24 disposed between the first and second transmissive material plates 20 and 22 and a second liquid crystal layer 24 disposed between the second and third transmissive material plates 22 and 26 And a liquid crystal layer (28). As the first to third permeable substance plates 20, 22 and 26, a glass substrate whose molecular density is lower than that of the crystalline substance plate may be used, but it is more preferable to use a plastic substrate having a molecular density smaller than that of the glass substrate . The plastic substrate makes the weight of the liquid crystal wave plate much lighter than the glass substrate.
The rubbing direction of the liquid crystal molecules 24A of the first liquid crystal layer 24 is formed to be perpendicular to the rubbing direction of the liquid crystal molecules 28A of the second liquid crystal layer 28. [ The rubbing direction of the liquid crystal molecules 24A of the first liquid crystal layer 24 and the rubbing direction of the liquid crystal molecules 28A of the second liquid crystal layer 28 are perpendicular to the optical axis of the light beam. Further, the thickness (d 2) of the first thickness of the liquid crystal layer (24), (d 1) and the second liquid crystal layer 28 are respectively determined by the following Equation 4 and Equation 5.
The liquid crystal molecules 24A and 28A constituting the first and second liquid crystal layers 24 and 28 are formed by refracting a light beam in accordance with their crystal directions to convert the linearly polarized light beam into a circularly polarized light beam or a circularly polarized light beam into a linearly polarized light beam do.
FIG. 3 shows an optical pickup apparatus using a liquid crystal wavelength plate shown in FIG. 3, the optical pickup apparatus includes a light source 32 for generating a light beam to be irradiated on the optical disc 30, an objective lens 34 positioned between the optical disc 30 and the light source 12, And a photodetector 36 for converting the light beam reflected by the photodetector 36 into an electrical signal. The objective lens 34 condenses the light beam from the light source 32 onto the surface of the optical disc 30 so that information is read on the optical disc. The photodetector 36 converts the reflected light beam, which is reflected by the optical disc 30 and passed through the objective lens 34, into an electrical signal.
The optical pickup apparatus includes a beam splitter 38 provided between a light source 32 and an objective lens 34 and a liquid crystal wave plate 40 provided between an objective lens 34 and a beam splitter 38. The beam splitter 38 passes the light beam from the light source 32 to the optical disc 30 via the liquid crystal wavelength plate 40 and the objective lens 14. [ The beam splitter 38 reflects the reflected light beam incident from the optical disk 30 via the objective lens 34 and the liquid crystal wave plate 40 to the photodetector 36 side. The liquid crystal wave plate 40 converts the linearly polarized light beam proceeding from the beam spirater 38 side toward the objective lens 34 to the left side light beam and the left side light beam 32 from the objective lens 34 toward the beam splitter 38, Into a linearly polarized light beam. Since the liquid crystal wave plate 40 for converting the polarization characteristic of the light beam is already described in FIG. 2, detailed description thereof will be omitted. This liquid crystal wave plate 40 reduces the weight while improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the optical pickup device.
The optical pickup apparatus further includes an actuator 42 for moving the objective lens 34 in the horizontal and vertical directions and a collimator lens 44 provided between the beam splitter 38 and the liquid crystal wave plate 40. The actuator 42 moves the objective lens 34 in the vertical and horizontal directions so that the focus of the light beam is formed on the information track formed on the surface of the optical disk 30 and the optical beam precisely follows the information track. The collimator lens 44 moves the light beam from the beam splitter 38 toward the liquid crystal wave plate 40 in parallel so as to prevent leakage of the light beam. As a result, the collimator lens 44 improves the light sensitivity and the signal-to-noise ratio of the photodetector 36.
