そこで、本発明の一実施形態では下部電極101と発光層303の間にプラズモン低減層1000が設けられている。プラズモン低減層1000は、下部電極101の表面プラズモン吸収を抑制して、発光層303における励起有機分子のエネルギー損失を抑制するものである。特に、下部電極101として反射率の高いAl/Ag合金の電極を用いた場合、プラズモン低減層1000は有効である。図4に示したように、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚を大きくすることによって、下部電極101と発光層303との物理的距離を大きくし、下部電極101の表面プラズモン吸収を抑制でき、有機発光素子から出射させる光量を多くできる。図4の発光位置とは、下部電極101の発光層303が形成された側の表面から、発光層303の下部電極101が形成された側の表面までの距離をいう。よって、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚としては発光層303から封止基板107に取出される光取出し効率が75%を超える100nm以上、好ましくは光取出し効率が80%を超える150nm以上、より好ましくは光取出し効率が90%を超える200nm以上であることが望ましい。一方、図4を参照すると、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚をある一定値以上大きくしても、下部電極101の表面プラズモン吸収を抑制できる割合はさほど変わらなくなる。逆に、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚を大きくするほど、プラズモン低減層1000の電子密度が大きくなるため、プラズモン低減層1000の透過率が低下し(図5参照)、発光層303から出射された光であってプラズモン低減層1000を通過する光の量が減衰する可能性がある。よって、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚としては500nm以下、好ましくは400nm以下であることが望ましい。

<正孔注入層301>
正孔注入層301とは発光効率や寿命を改善する目的で使用される。また、特に必須ではないが、陽極の凹凸を緩和する目的で使用される。正孔注入層301を単層もしくは複数層設けてもよい。正孔注入層301としては、PEDOT(ポリ(3、4−エチレンジオキシチオフェン)):PSS(ポリスチレンスルホネート)等の導電性高分子が好ましい。その他にも、ポリピロール系やトリフェニルアミン系のポリマー材料を用いることができる。また、フタロシアニン類化合物やスターバーストアミン系化合物も適用できる。<

<上部電極102>
上部電極102は透明電極である。透明電極の材料としてプラズモン低減層1000と同じようにITOやIZOなどが挙げられる。図5で示したように、電極として透明電極を用いた場合、透明電極の膜厚を大きくするほど、透明電極の透過率が下がる。このとき、上部電極102は、プラズモン低減層1000とは異なり反射電極の表面プラズモン吸収を抑制する必要性がないため、プラズモン低減層1000ほど膜厚を大きくする必要はない。透明電極の膜厚と透過率の関係を考慮すれば、上部電極102の膜厚はできるだけ小さいほうが望ましい。よって、上部電極102の膜厚は、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚より小さいことが望ましい。具体的には、上部電極102の膜厚としては50nm以上140nm以下、好ましくは80nm以上120nm以下であることが望ましい。また、プラズモン低減層1000として透明電極を用いた場合、図3の下部では、下部電極101およびプラズモン低減層1000が電極として機能するが、図3の上部で電極として機能するのが上部電極102のみである。よって、上部電極102の電子密度をプラズモン低減層1000の電子密度より大きくすることが望ましい。<

<光取出し層108>
本発明の一致実施形態では、光取出し層108によりプラズモン低減層1000の形成によって生じる光学干渉を低減できる。プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚が数十nmのように可視光の波長領域より小さい場合、人間の視覚で認識できるほどの光学干渉は生じない。一方、プラズモン低減層1000の膜厚が数μmから数十μmのように可視光の波長領域よりかなり大きい場合、光学干渉が生じることはほとんどない。本発明の一致実施形態で用いられるプラズモン低減層1000の膜厚は、可視光の波長領域に近いため、光学干渉が生じやすい。よって、光取出し層108を形成することによりプラズモン低減層1000の形成によって生じる光学干渉を低減できる。<

光取出し層108は、例えばバインダと微粒子で構成される。光取出し層108に含まれるバインダの屈折率は封止基板107の屈折率以上であることが望ましい。具体的には、含まれるバインダの屈折率を1.5以上1.8以下とすることが望ましい。光取出し層108に入射する光量を増やすために、光取出し層108に含まれるバインダの屈折率を1.7以上1.8以下とすることが望ましい。屈折率は、エリプソメトリ法、分光反射率・透過率測定法を用いて求められる。光取出し層108に含まれる微粒子の屈折率が十分に高ければ、光取出し層108に含まれるバインダの屈折率を1.5以下としてもよい。

光取出し層108を形成する微粒子の屈折率はバインダの屈折率より高いことが望ましい。具体的には、微粒子の屈折率が2.0以上のものを選択することが望ましい。有機発光素子を照明として用いる場合は、発せられる光が着色しないよう可視領域で白又は淡色のものが望ましい。具体的には酸化チタン(屈折率:2.5以上2.7以下)、酸化ジルコニウム(屈折率:2.4)、チタン酸バリウム(屈折率:2.4)、チタン酸ストロンチウム(屈折率:2.37)、酸化ビスマス(屈折率:2.45)等が挙げられる。これらの材料を一種単独または二種以上併用してもよい。また、信号機(緑色、黄色、赤色)や警告灯(赤色)のように所望の発光色が有色の場合は、その色と類似の色の粒子を使用できる。青色を発光させる場合は酸化銅(屈折率:2.71)等の青色粒子を、赤色を発光させる場合は酸化第二鉄(屈折率:3.01)等の赤色粒子を、黄色を発光させる場合は酸化カドミウム(屈折率:2.49)等の黄色粒子を使用できる。
