Abstract

PURPOSE:To simply and effectively prepare bulk mesophase pitch having a quality suitable for use a matrix carbon precursor for a C/C composite material, by conducting hydrogenation of starting pitch, regulation of the beta-resin content of the hydrogenated pitch and optimization of heat treating conditions. CONSTITUTION:Bulk mesophase pitch for a C/C composite material exhibiting a percentage residual carbon of 90% or more at 600 deg.C and a viscosity of 100P at 350-400 deg.C is prepared by the following method. Coal tar pitch is hydrogenated to lower the oxygen content to 1.0wt.%. Low-boiling components are removed by solvent extraction, distillation, or a combination thereof of the hydrogenated coal tar pitch thus obtd. to prepare pitch having a beta-resin content of 20-70wt.%. The prepd. pitch is heat treated at 530 deg.C or below while blowing an inert gas into the system or under a reduced pressure or under conditions of a combination thereof.
