Abstract

PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously reduce the content of an organic base in an epoxy compound useful as a raw material for epoxy resins, by reacting the epoxy compound with an alkaline metallic hydroxide and specific phosphines in an inert solvent. CONSTITUTION:(A) An epoxy compound is reacted with (C) an alkaline metallic hydroxide, e.g. NaOH, KOH or LiOH, and (D) phosphines expressed by the formula (R1-R3 are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl), especially tributylphosphine or triphenylphosphine in (B) an inert organic solvent, such as xylene, to remarkably and economically reduce the amount of an organic base contained in the compound (A) without requiring expensive chemicals or special reaction condition. Furthermore, the inert organic solvent (B) is used in an amount of 10-200pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. epoxy compound (A). The compounds (C) and (D) are respectively used in the following amounts based on 1 equiv. organic base contained in the epoxy compound (A). 1-10 equiv. compound (C) and 0.05-1 equiv. compound (D).
