PURPOSE:To make it impossible to cause any error in an air-fuel ratio by measuring a pressure in an intake pipe, or an intake quantity and rotational speed, thereby calculating purge gas quantity from a canister, and then opening a purge passage only for a period required for purging fuel adsorbed to the canister. CONSTITUTION:A purge passage 24 is opened only for a required period and a period having an effect on an air-fuel ratio is limited to the minimum, and as well, in the absence of adsorbed fuel in a canister 20, air isn't sucked into an intake pipe 13 from the purge passage 24, so as not to cause any error in the air-fuel ratio in a leaning direction. In addition, in an operation region where a purge fuel has an effect, the purge passage 24 is closed by means of a valve 21b, and then, purge is performed in a region with a little effect so as not to cause any purge shortage.
