Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title crystal modification having strong absorptions also in the near-infrared region and suited as a color-forming material of a pressure-sensitive copying paper or a thermal recording paper, having a property of exhibiting strong peaks at specified angles of diffraction (2theta) in X-ray diffractometry with Cu-Kalpha line. CONSTITUTION:The title crystal modification (beta-modification) characterized by showing an X-ray diffraction pattern having strong peaks at angles of diffraction (2theta) of 7.1, 10.5 and 23.8 in X-ray diffractometry with Cu-Kalpha line. This compound has three crystal modifications (alpha, beta and gamma), and the other two forms (alpha and gamma) are very low in sensitivity of color formation and color density in the near-infrared region and are markedly poor in light fastness of a coat, whereas said beta-form is high in sensitivity of color formation and color density and low in discoloration and decomposition upon irradiation with sunlight and is excellent in light fastness of coat. Therefore, it has a very high utility value as a color-forming material used in an OCR pressure-sensitive copying paper or thermal recording paper as well as a color-forming material used in a common pressure-sensitive copying paper or thermal recording paper.
