Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a copy with fidelity by designating an area in a picture and applying different gradation processing depending on the inside and the outside of the designated area. CONSTITUTION:A gamma correction/conversion circuit 103 applies different gradation processing to each area in an original 1 where a picture area 1a and a character area 1b exist in mixture. That is, and a gamma correction processing table of a gamma correction curve is selected so as to attain 1:1 of input : the output from white to black levels including the intermediate tone part so as to reproduce the gradation of an original picture with fidelity in the area 1a. On the other hand, the gamma correction processing table of the gamma conversion curve with a high contrast is selected in an area 1b so as to prevent the pickup of the undesired background color or rear color. Thus, even when a medium with different gradation characteristic such as character or line drawing exists in mixture in one and same original, optimum gamma correction in matching with each gradation is applied and more fidelity copying with the original is attained.
