Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a coated sintered hard alloy having excellent resistance to chipping and wear by coating a specific film consisting of alpha and kappa type Al2O3 on the surface of a sintered hard alloy base material consisting of a hard phase which is the carbide or carbonitride of metals and a bond phase which is iron group metals. CONSTITUTION:The sintered hard alloy base material is constituted of about 90-96wt.% hard phase consisting of at least one kind of the carbide and carbonitrides of group 4a, 5a, 6a elements of the periodic table and about 4-10% bond phase consisting of at least one kind of the iron group elements. At least the Al2O3 film is coated on the surface of this material. The Al2O3 film is constituted of the mixed crystals composed of the alpha type Al2O3 and the kappa type Al2O3 and is so formed that the diffraction intensity ratio of the (113) peak of the alpha type Al2O3 and the (202) peak of the kappa type Al2O3 by an X-ray diffraction curve has the relation 0.2<=Ikappa(202)/Ialpha(113)<=5.0. The thickness of the above-mentioned Al2O3 film is preferably 4-12mum and the Al2O3 crystal grain size thereof is preferably <=5.0mum. the toughness of the Al2O3 film is thereby enhanced and the coated sintered hard alloy which forms long-life tools by decreasing the abrasion loss and chipping is obtd.
