PURPOSE:To contrive to improve sintering properties and to enable production of a superconducting ceramic having high density and high critical current density in the titled powder of A (rare earth element)-B (alkaline earth metal element)-Cu oxide system, by making the powder have a specific surface area in a specific range. CONSTITUTION:In superconducting ceramic powder shown by the general formula by AxByCu3O7-delta, having a layer perovskite structure of oxygen deficient type, the specific surface area is 3-15m<2>/g. With the proviso that in the formula, A is rare earth element B is alkaline earth metallic element, x=0.8-1.2, y=1.6-2.4 and 7-delta shows that number of O atoms is somewhat smaller than seven. Powder having <3m<2>/g specific surface area has bad sintering properties, a low critical current density, has difficulty in forming a thin film and provides a thin film having low strength. On the other hand, since powder having >15m<2>/g specific surface area is liable to cause secondary aggregation, the powder has poor moldability and has difficulty in forming a thin film.
