Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable production of the titled fibrous material having excellent orientation properties of crystal in reacting a crystalline flat fibrous material of potassium dititanate or a derivative thereof with a bivalent metallic compound, by adding an effective amount of an alkali hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A crystalline flat fibrous material of a potassium dititanate shown by the general formula K2-lHlTi2O5.mH2O (l is 0-2; m is 0 or usually <=2) or a hydrate derivative thereof is used as a starting raw material. The raw material and an aqueous solution of one or more metallic compounds of an oxide, hydroxide, inorganic acid salt and organic acid salt of bivalent metal M are subjected to contact reaction in the presence of an effective amount of an alkali hydroxide dissolved in the aqueous solution. M is Ba, Sr, Pb, Ca, Mg, Zn, Ni, Cd, Mn, Fe or Cu. By this method, the crystalline flat fibrous material having excellent orientation properties of crystal and general formula MTiO3 is obtained under a mild reaction condition.
